very ortunate to have many dedicatedvolunteers who work in the oce stu-
ing envelopes, doing data entry, stang
events throughout the year, and much
more. One o those volunteers, Valerie,
was instrumental in the huge success o
this years annual merchant campaign.
She contacted Market merchants, encour-
aging them to support the campaign
with their gits o $75 or more. These gits
were recognized by the red and green
banners that few high over Pike Place
and by the wreaths that were displayed
at participating Market businesses, which
were delivered by another dedicated
volunteer, Lynn. Following the holidays,
yet another enthusiastic volunteer,
Jane, rounded up all the wreaths and
organized everything to be ready or
next year. Thanks to Valerie, Lynn, Jane
and Market businesses or loving the
Market Foundation and raising just
over $8,000.
Our beloved piggies rom Pigs on
Parade were purchased by swine lovers
all over the country, bringing home
lots o bacon or the Market Founda-
tion (see story on page 3). One special
piggie, Pollack Pig was the beginning
o a love aair or Linda Sedgley. She
saw him on the sidewalk in ront o
the Alexis and swooned in delight.
Turns out that Pollack Pig brought
back ond memories or Linda o a
trip to the Museum o Modern Art in
NYC, and her rst glimpse at a Pollockpainting that brought her such joy she
was moved to tears. Lindas husband,
Rick, decided the pig was a perect
50th birthday git and began making
secret plans to make sure Pollack Pig
was theirs. Ater making the winning
bid on E-bay, Rick and their son Adam
(who happens to be a Pike Market
Preschool alum) loaded Pollack Pig in
a truck and made a grand tour o nos-
talgic places in Seattlethe amilys
ormer homes, the church they were
married in, special places Linda loved
and documented each in a photo. O
course, their last stop was the Market
or a photo o Pollack Pig alongsideher namesake, Rachel, the Market
piggie bank. Thoinks again to all
the pig lovers out there!
Donors say they love knowing
theyre supporting services or
low-income olks. Many new
donors included the Market
Foundation in their philanthropic
giving this year, and we welcome
them to our amily o donors.
Please contact Lynda Woods at
[email protected] i you
have questions about charitable
giving, stock gits or want to know how
your company or community group
can be involved.
Its February, and all about love this
month. Supporters o the Market
Foundation expressed their caring
or low income people in manyways.
Love is a many splendored thing and
lets count the ways olks showed us
they care about the Market. Here we go:
Ah & T Irac held their second
annual gol tournament and chose the
Pike Market Clinic as the beneciary.
They raised $23,600 towards the Clinic
expansion and lots o golers, their
riends and colleagues now know more
about the Market Foundation. When the
expansion is complete, Clinic physicians
will be able to see more patients and
getting good health care. Its all aboutthe love!
Each year, the Market Foundation
coordinates a Giving Tree with tags
or people who otherwise might not
celebrate the holidays. The tags are or
little ones who need warm mittens, snow
boots and puzzles to a working mothers
request or a black skirt, size 12 to wear
to work and a senior who just needs a
cozy hooded sweatshirt. Portico Grop,
a good neighbor o the Market, gener-
ously took tags, then came back or more.
Anne ORourke says We were thrilled to
know that the Market Foundation had a
Giving Tree. These people are right here,
in our community, and we wanted to
make a dierence locally. Our employees
had so much un shopping, wrapping
and delivering the gits. One employee
received a tag or a 10 year old boy who
needed socks, underwear and jeans. She
went way beyond that and couldnt resist
adding some toys and a hoodie t-shirt to
be sure he elt cool. It was the highlight
o our holidays! That same sentiment
must be what keeps the WAMu employ-
ees coming back each year. For the past
our years, they have been huge support-
ers o the Giving Tree and we appreciate
their ongoing commitment.
Volunteering is another way to show
the love. The Market Foundation is

Pike Market MeDiCAL CLiniC
rmdl Udy
Ater more than a decades wait,
the Pike Market Medical Clinic nally
broke ground in January or its newly
expanded acility, scheduled to be com-
pleted late summer 2008. Expansion will
double the number o exam rooms rom
6 to 12, bringing the Clinic up to 3 exam
rooms per physician. The expansion will
also include a provider oce, laboratory,
waiting area, and a conerence room or
group therapy sessions. Without adding
stang, the physical expansion will
increase the number o patients seen
and decrease appointment wait times.
First conceived in the early 1990s, the
idea or a Clinic expansion was devel-
oped as a way to meet the increasing
demand or services, which had already
begun to outstrip the capacity o the
current acility. The Market Foundation
immediately began raising unds. The
Care or the Market
campaign alone
raised more than a
hal million dollars,
and private grantsrom sources such as
the Foster Founda-
tion helped secure
the remaining unds
needed. Finding a site
in the historic Market
proved to be more
challenging - 10 years
more challenging, in
act.
During its decade-
long wait or a site, the
Clinic developed ever
more creative means
to make the most oits current space. Sta shited schedules,
shared desks, and even sacriced one o
the 3 clinic restrooms to create a blood-
draw room.
The relocation o the Senior Center in
2006 at last opened the much needed
space. But in the years since the plan was
rst conceived, the Clinics needs evolved
and the cost o an expansion grew well
beyond what was originally raised or
the remodel. New plans were developed
to best suit the needs o the Clinic today
and the oreseeable uture, and more
capital undraising was kicked o.

The Rainbow Birds (4 year olds) are
learning what people do in the shipping
industry. And theyve transormed their
play area into a reighter, complete with
huge paper waves, a paper mach ice-berg, and a ceiling hoist. Meanwhile, the
Moonbeams (3 year olds) are studying
ballet and recently learned that men can
be ballerinas too.
The teachers are all preparing or their
re-accreditation by the National Associa-

(NAEYC). Only 30 o Seattles 300+ child
care centers are accredited and Pike is
one. The Peach Foundation has lent its
support and contributed $23,800 to bee
up the schools science and music educa-

Former teachers, board members
and students all gathered in October tocelebrate the schools 25th anniversary. A
rousing good time was had by all.
