NEWSLETTER 2016 WEEK 8 TERM 3

Greetings to you all,

This week we have held learning conversations with you and your children at school to discuss your child’s progress in their learning. I trust that you have found these conversations to be constructive and I invite you to email me at [email protected] if you have any feedback or queries about these opportunities. I’m especially interested in hearing your thoughts about how valuable you found your child’s contributions being included in the meeting, your questions and wonderings about their learning and how successful you found the meetings to be. The teachers at Galilee prepare for these and appreciate the opportunity to communicate with you and we are always looking to enhance the effectiveness of these meetings in supporting your child’s progress.

I recently met with Mr. Paul Rijken at Cardijn College to explore possibilities for our staff engaging in professional learning opportunities with Cardijn staff in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and in literacy and numeracy. Paul and I are both supportive of these opportunities which will then benefit our children at Galilee in accessing quality learning programs lead by our teaching staff. Cardijn College are a leading school in our state in STEM and are often asked to share their expertise with schools from all different systems. This year we have made significant purchases and investment in professional development and resources for teaching STEM at Galilee and we look forward to continuing to provide excellent opportunities for our children in STEM now and into the future. If you are currently considering secondary schooling for your child I recommend attending a tour at Cardijn College where you can learn about the many pathways for learning and the excellent teachers, facilities and programs in place for students.

Have you ever considered being a mentor and sharing your interests with a younger member of the community? At Galilee we are interested in setting up a mentoring program where adults who are passionate about sharing an interest can be a trusted mentor to one or two students who would benefit from sharing in an interest such as gardening, craft, woodworking, technology, sports, art, nature and more once a week for between 30 - 60 minutes. You would not need to be an expert, just willing to share your passion or interest in a simple, hands on way that may involve a small project that can be shared with a student. Resources, spaces and support would be provided by school staff throughout this program. Please keep an eye out for further information and you are most welcome to register your interest at the front desk and leave your name and contact details.

Have a wonderful week and stay warm with your family. Yours truly, Anthony Garton Acting Principal

Una città per bambini

In stage 1, this term, we have been looking at mappe (maps) of our school and of Aldinga using Google Earth. Then we thought about designing a city for children, una città per bambini. At the question, “what would you put in una città per bambini?”, some of the answers were:

Layla – A rainbow and a garden, because it can be a nice day and children can have picnics.

Kealan – A museum, because children might like it and they can learn more about dinosaurs and they can learn more about the old days. In the old days there were many Italian people in Australia and they can learn that too.

Archie – A lolly shop, because children love candy. My shop has also fairy floss smoke so that children can smell lollies all the time.

Cooper – A house, because if you didn’t have it, you’d get rained on.

Idee molto interessanti da parte di tutti i bambini! Very interesting ideas from all the children!

Talking about cities and houses, my thoughts go to all the people who have been affected by the recent earthquakes in Italy and Myanmar. In particular, to the Italian town of Amatrice, which was heavily damaged a few weeks ago. Amatrice, not far from Rome, is a very old town, full of important historical buildings, and famous for having invented an iconic Italian pasta sauce, called sugo all’amatriciana. Ecco la ricetta per 4 persone, here’s the recipe for 4 people:

Il sugo: 100g pork-cheek 350g tomato sauce a dash of extra virgin olive oil chilli to your liking

La pasta: 350g spaghetti or penne

Pecorino cheese to add at the very end! Sara Foschini

Sacrament Enrolment letter

A letter explaining options for enrolling your child/ren in the Sacramental program has been sent out this week. We welcome your enquiries about any of the Sacraments (Baptism, First Reconciliation, Confirmation or Holy Communion) and are very happy to provide any information you need to assist your decisions about celebrating these Sacraments. Please contact the front office if you haven’t received a letter and are interested. Thank you.

Andrew Chinn

On Monday 26th September Andrew Chinn will be visiting Galilee. Andrew is the composer of many of the wonderful songs that our children learn and sing in celebration for masses, liturgy, prayer etc. Andrew works with each of the year levels in a workshop format to teach them songs and actions so that the whole school can come together for a concert to share and celebrate what they have learned. The last time Andrew came the children had a wonderful day of engaging with music that they love.

Everyone is welcome to join us for the concert on MONDAY 26th SEPTEMBER at 1:45pm in the Hall.

GALILEE PLAYGROUP - Mondays during term time 9am - 11am in the Community Room

Did you know that we have a playgroup at Galilee Catholic School? Many of our families start their time here at Galilee by attending playgroup and getting to know other families prior to starting school.

Our playgroup is a place of welcoming, respecting and constructing. We welcome all children from 0-5 years of age. We believe playgroup is a great opportunity to further a child’s development. We provide a range of experiences for the children such as indoor and outdoor play, painting, craft, story-time, song and dance.

Some activities are structured, requiring leadership from coordinators, parents and carers. With these sorts of activities it gives parents and carers the opportunity to get together, play and share quality time and experiences with their children. Other activities allow children to play freely by themselves and with others. Playing alongside other children contributes to their social development, they learn to share, take turns and negotiate with others. Children learn through play. It is through play that we encourage them to explore their environment and develop understandings about their world. Most of all they have FUN!

So…come along and meet everyone. New parents, carers and children are ALWAYS welcome.

SOCCER STRIPS

If all players could please take a spare top to your soccer game on Saturday. At the end of your game please hand your soccer top to your coach, who will wash them all and return the whole set to the office ready for the 2017 season.
