Newsletter – Week 4

29 Solandra Way, FORRESTFIELD WA 6058 08 9483 2200

From the Principal We are finally returning to some sort of normal. Almost all students are back on deck and classes are returning to

normal – although it is a new normal.

A huge THANK YOU to parents and carers who worked with students at home. We have noticed that many

students have made very strong progress at home while the school was closed– some of you may have missed your

calling.

21st Century Science

Our seed production area continues to lead the way in science in Western Australia. The current edition of Australasian

Plant Conservation features writing from our students and a terrific diagram by Declan in Year 6. This work was

submitted for publication in 2019 and was part of a project in conjunction with the CSIRO; demonstrating how our

school is preparing students for the challenges of the 21st century.

21st Century Assemblies

Our year six technicians are very busy learning some new technology skills. In this new normal where parents can’t

come onsite we are investigating ways to produce digital assemblies. Room 9 will have their assembly next week. We

will post a link to highlights of this assembly next week.

Mental Maths

Our staff have been working very hard to support students to master the basic maths facts and operations that will

enable them to learn more complex concepts. All year levels have made exceptional progress. A special mention to

Year One, the biggest improvers. Their class average score in Maths Wizard improved by 75% over first term. Well

done Mrs. Margraf, Miss Letts and all the parents and carers who are helping out at home.

Reports Semester One

Semester one reports will not contain A-E grades due to the Covid-19 Crisis and the subsequent interruption to

regular programming. All reports will be issued with comments about student progress and participation.

Parents Offsite

Thanks to all parents and carers for their support and acceptance of this important measure to keep us all safe and

healthy.

Students are requested to bring their own individual water bottles that can be filled from the fountain as necessary. This will reduce the need for students to drink directly from fountains. Parents are reminded that we can’t have students at school if they are sick. Finally, if you need help or know someone who does these links may be useful. https://www.ruah.org.au/resources/ https://www.redcross.org.au/get-help/community-services Stay Safe and Healthy

SCHOOL PHOTO DAY IS COMING!

Monday 15th June (Kindy Miyak Friday 19th June)

Dear Parents,

For the duration of COVID-19, please be aware that Kapture photographers are following all recommended health guidelines and safe practices. Kapture have modified the photography system whereby photographers will remain at all times 1.5m from students and staff. Photographers will use only verbal queues and instructions in an effort to uphold a high standard of student presentation. Students may be instructed by photographers to use single use sterile combs, use wet wipes or tissues, to fix collars, buttons and stray hairs - all without physically touching students.

Our school photo day is coming! Approximately two weeks prior to the photo day every student will receive a Kapture Photography order envelope to bring home. The recommended method of ordering your photos is online thro ugh Kapture’s website as your payment is secure and can be easily verified at any time. If you pay online, there is no need to return the order envelope to school.

Alternatively, you can pay by cash and return the provided envelope to the school on the photography day. Please note the photographers cannot open sealed envelopes and cannot provide change.

Sibling orders can ONLY be placed online. Late requests cannot be granted. You have the option to order a sibling photo package online, however please note sibling orders will close in most instances at 12-midday sharp, one business day before the first photo date. We suggest you place your online sibling order as soon as you receive your order envelope with your order instructions as places are limited.

Log on to kapture.com.au for your sibling photo order cut-off date and time.

Late payment envelopes cannot be accepted by the school office or by Kapture. You can place an order online for class or individual photographs at any time for the remainder of the current school year; however, a $20 fee will apply if you order more than 10 days after photography.

If your child is in a sports or special photo, you can use the same school code on your order envelope to view and order these photos on Kapture’s website, around the time that school photos are ready to be delivered. Please note; class, individual and sibling portraits are not available to view online prior to purchase.

Kapture offer a money back guarantee for any parent who is not fully satisfied with their photo package. Should you have any queries before or after photo day, please direct them to the Kapture office on 9240 1714 or email [email protected].

All students will be photographed individually on photo day for school administration records AS WELL as included in their class group presentation available for purchase to all families. Should there be any reason why your child should NOT be included in the photo shoot –please contact the school office.

Australasian Plant Conservation | Vol 28 No 3 December 2019 – February 202024

Nestled in the foothills of the Darling Range in Western Australia lies Woodlupine Primary School. Like all primary schools, the basics of a good education, including reading, writing, mathematics and science are covered. However, the school was seeking to instil more than these basics in their students, they were wanting to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge that would help them meet the changing demands of the 21st century. There was a realisation that the planet is facing some significant environmental challenges, and rather than waiting for others to come up with solutions the school was wanting a way of becoming involved in conservation in a practical, but meaningful way.

It was with this thinking that the idea for the seed project was born. School Principal Trevor Phoebe had heard about the work being carried out around Australia by the Australian Seed Bank Partnership, and so approached the partnership for ideas of how to become involved. He then contacted the Western Australian Seed Centre where the idea of establishing a seed production area, to grow and collect seed of conservation significant plant species, was developed. The project was officially launched in May 2019 and seed has already been collected from two of the three species established in the initial trial phase of the project (Bossiaea modesta and Puccinellia vassica). The third species, Schoenia filifolia subsp. subulifolia has flowered and seed is in the process of being collected.

On the next page, we have some contributions from the students of Woodlupine Primary School, their thoughts on the project, and what they are learning from it.

Showing students the science of seeds Introduction by Damian Wrigley, National Coordinator, Australian Seed Bank Partnership

Seedbanks and the science that underpins our work provide practical and fun options for students to engage with native plant conservation. Seedbanks provide a safe space for students to understand the importance of Australia’s native plants and to explore the science and techniques that underpin native seed collection, use and conservation. We would like to say a big thank you to the students from Woodlupine Primary School in Western Australia and Kildare College in South Australia for helping our seed banks to conserve native species and for sharing their perspectives on what they’ve learned from our seed science experts.
