CARAMUT GARDEN NOTES While Autumn’s very much in evidence in the April garden, it’s also an important month to prepare for Spring. The Autumn tidy up continues; cut off dead flowers, long whippy shoots and anything tired or burnt. Heavier pruning is best left until later in the year. Clear out and compost the remains of summer vegies and any weeds without flowers or seeds on them. Dig it over and rake level. If you added plenty of rotted organic matter for your Summer crops, there’s no need to add more or to apply fertiliser. If not, dig through some cow manure or compost, or both and add a handful of complete plant food per square meter of food. Plant seeds of broad beans, peas, radishes or spinach directly where they are to grow and seedlings of broccoli, cabbages, leeks, lettuces, onions and shallots. The generation of kids who’ve grown up thinking that peas come in plastic bags from the supermarket freezer will be astonished to discover that peas grow on living plants. Introduce the children in your life to this miracle of nature, or grow fresh peas just because they taste so good. Snow peas, which do well in pots, are the answer if you lack space. Cornflower is an old favourite that adds trendy blue touches to the garden. ‘Mystic Blue’ is the romantically named blue cornflower in seed range but, if you want more than just blue, sow Cornflower ‘Double Mixed’, which blooms in a variety of colours. When planting out flower seedlings for a winter/spring display, settle them in by watering with some fertiliser concentrates. Now is the time to lift clumps of flowering perennials then divide and plant them to get more free plants. Straight after good soaking rain is a good time to apply mulch to the whole garden. Mulch insulates the soil, helping to retain soil warmth for longer. It also conserves soil moisture by reducing evaporation and as it rots away, it improves the soil’s structure, texture and fertility. Remove black-spot-infected leaves from roses and pick off any other plant parts that are showing signs of fungus. Don’t put diseased leaves or flowers into the compost. It’s best to wrap them in plastic and drop them safely in the bin. If plants have been in the same pot for a number of years, this is a good time to take them out and check the roots. Trim off anything that’s damaged or rotten. If the potting soil is full of compacted roots, loosen them gently or use a sharp knife to cut through the outer edges of the root ball. Pot into fresh mix and, if necessary, into a larger pot filled with good quality Potting Mix. April’s an important month for the lawn because, in most areas, it’s the last chance to get the lawn into shape before winter. The four main steps to having a great lawn are aerate, feed, apply dolomite lime if soil is over acidic, and weed. Competitions winners for April were: Special: 1st Brenda Uebergang 2nd Lorraine Schefferle Bloom: 1st Mary Underwood Equal 2nd Brenda Uebergang & Margie Eales Produce: 1st Mary Underwood 2nd Lorraine Schefferle !

Our next meeting is at 10 am at Caramut Rec Reserve on Tuesday May 10th . Competition “A Chrysanthemum”
