In Year 2/3O we have been working very hard on developing our Mathematical skills and strategies

when investigating numbers and measurements. We have been using lots of different materials to

count in groups of 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. We have also been using a lot of informal materials to measure our

heights. It has been a lot of fun learning new ways of counting and measuring.

Sometimes we work in partners and small groups to support each other and sometimes we work

independently to engage in our own thinking and problem solving to take risks and build confidence.

Principal News

Dear Parents, Caregivers, Students and Friends of St Joseph’s

Last weekend Mr Matt Pick, Ms Jane Smith and 3 enthusiastic (and fit) students from St Joseph’s combined with riders from

Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish School, Our Lady of the Visitation, and Whitefriars Catholic School to participate in the

team “Jet Pack” at the 2016 Pedal Prix race. Mount Carmel College (MCC) organised the facilities and races three vehicles

each year. MCC have a Boys team and a Girls team who raced.

The Pedal Prix is an endurance race for three-wheeled, pedal-powered vehicles. The race was held in the Adelaide

Parklands this year.

Thank you to Mr Pick, Ms Smith, students, Chris & Anna Harakos, Chris & Sarah Winter and Maria Pham for their

commitment and dedication leading up to and on the day.

Congratulations to Holly Winter, Vasili Harakos & Leticia Pham

TEACHING OUR CHILDREN TO BE ORGANISED

Some children seem to always have a schoolbag full of scraps of paper, overdue library books, outdated school

notices, stale remnants of lunch, a dirty sneaker. It is no coincidence that these same messy students often

underachieve at school and find it impossible to meet deadlines. They lack the organisation skills we all need to get through

our busy, complex days. Many children never develop these skills during their schooldays and struggle in their first years at

university or in a job. One of the best things we can do for them is give them ways they can organise their paperwork, get

started on time on tasks, keep track of books and projects, concentrate on what needs to be done, plan deadlines and

keep all their ‘school stuff’ in designated spaces. An impossible task? Not with the modern technology, colour-coded folders.

A desk and shelves at home and a weekly plan for what lies ahead.

SOME IDEAS

Make use of phones and internet programs to organize a calendar, send reminders, and sound the alarm. Boys

especially are amenable to using electronic means of organisation and can base their whole life around their

organisers. Both girls and boys are likely to go into jobs where they are expected to use message and calendar systems.

Keep a large, clear family calendar in a visible place like the kitchen and use different coloured pens for each member of

the family.

Keep a filing shelf with a coloured folder for each child. File all notices, projects and important material for that child’s

activities. Children can also keep coloured folders for their subjects at school which they update every day.

Establish daily routines for mealtimes, TV/computer time, homework, leisure, bedtime so your children already have structure

to their day. Spend a set time every day checking on dates and deadlines.

Discuss classroom routines with your children’s teacher so you can follow and reinforce them at home. Discuss ways the

teacher thinks your child could work at improved organisation skills.

Share your own planning and organisation tips. What applies to work, usually works with school as well. Model tidiness, a

place for important things like bills and keys, a routine to getting your own tasks done.

Show your children ways to make a start on a task, how to break it up into manageable chunks, how to prepare a

mind-map to plan each step.

Share how in your own life you take big tasks one step at a time. This should help save your child from being daunted by

what seems an impossible set of demands and build confidence in their own capacity to get things done.

Write every event, target and project in large letters on a calendar in their work area and have a short daily discussion

about what can be crossed off, what progress is being made and any looming deadlines.

SCHOOL HATS

From 1 September hats again became compulsory for all playtimes and learning activities outdoors. For families new to our

school, our school is a Sunsmart Accredited School, which means we abide and embed sunsafe recommendations put

forward by the SA Cancer Council. Thus from 1 September until 30 April each year, it is compulsory for all children and staff to

wear hats when outdoors. No Hat - No Play will apply to all children not wearing a hat for playtimes and they will also have

to “sit out‟ outside activity lessons.

OSHC service will not be open on this day. I will let parents know of the decision.

fun, and make new friends, learning happens.

All bookings can be made by ringing or messaging the OSHC mobile on 0437863067. If there is no answer, please leave a

Day at Pedal Prix

I woke up at 6 am to get dressed for this awesome day. When I finally arrived at the racetrack I was looking

at my car Jetpack when I saw a few friends at my old school and we talked for quite a while. My time finally

came up, 10:45 I was so excited I jumped in and pedalled real fast and just as I was shifting gears I heard

this peculiar sound so I looked down and… the chain fell off! I was so stunned, so I pedalled fast then

realized the vehicle wouldn’t go faster so I drifted to my pit and had a quick change over.

It was a real bummer and I had to wait ANOTHER 3 hours for my next turn. 3 hours later. Yes it’s finally my

shot so I wasted no time getting in the cart. As soon as I was out of the pit lane I was speeding like a cheater

I was on my second lap when I heard the same sound as I did last time and then it came to me in no time…

the chain fell off AGAIN!!! So I shouted some bad words and I had to pull over and wait for a marshal to

come over and fix the problem. Ok I was back on the road and about 40 seconds later someone thought it

was a smart idea to smash their cart into mine so I shouted some more bad words and rammed mine into

his.

Now it was my last lap and I gave all I had to finish off the job. Half way there I had a near miss with a cart

because it braked in front of mine. Once I pulled into my pit I got out and…..rested! I was so tired after

doing three laps. I did the math and I had done 6.5 kilometres the whole day. 1 lap=1.3 kilometres.

I didn’t stay the whole time but just as I was getting up to leave I heard this loud screech and it turned out

someone flipped over! So I stayed a bit more and saw 2 carts crash into each and someone’s feet went

through the floor! The person was rubbing his ear as well! And just as I left the race course I heard this

deafening, long screech of cardboard and fibreglass on the hard surface on the track! This was the perfect

way to leave the track.
