adapt, to the new conditions created by the economic crisis, in order to merely maintain, but improve its position in the global tourist market

Greeks are not the only ones that are

sanguine for their tourist product. According

to forecasts made by Expedia, the world’s

largest travel agency, the data for April, May

and June are very encouraging, while this is

the first time ever that bookings have been

made for as late as November 2011. in

particular, package tour bookings in Greek

islands during 2010 increased by more than

50% year to year, while 36% of the people

that visited Greece through Expedia came

from the US. This year Greece becomes

more competitive in price terms, thanks to

the reduction of the VAT rate from 11% to

6,5% for tourist accommodations, which is

expected to enable the country’s “heavy

industry" to offer more attractive packages

and increase tourist revenues by almost 700

million Euros, according to preliminary

estimates.

Thus Greece is enabled to compete in price

terms with its rivals, i.e. Spain, Turkey,

Cyprus, Malta, Portugal. The ministry of

Foreign Affairs, has based the effort to

increase tourist flows on the policy for

expediting visa procedures. According to

preliminary estimates, arrivals from Russia

will be increased by at least 40% in 2011,

reaching 500.000 visitors.

His optimism stems from two main

reasons a) the organized efforts made for

extending the tourist season and b)

turning Greece into an all-year long

destination that offers good value for

money, as well as the fact that the

economies of Greece’s most important

sources of visitors, such as Germany and

the U.K, are entering a recovery phase. A

main aim in regard to extending the tourist

season is to attract low cost carriers

during the “low period ‘ months, such as

November and December.

The Ministry is also developing four

distinct programs. Two of them are “city

break" programs, a Cultural crossroads

concerning Thessalonica, the third

advertises the Greek periphery and 90

experiences, while the fourth promotes

Greece’s monuments. Our best wishes !
