At United Way of Brazoria County (UWBC), weare committed to strengthening and supportingthe nonprofit sector in our region. Part of thiscommitment is educating and empoweringnonprofit leaders in the area about theimportant role they play in improving ourcommunities.

As such, United Way of Brazoria County, inpartnership with United Ways of Texas, invitesyou to the table as we explore newly releaseddata on the state’s nonprofit sector, and what itsays about the power of our sector and the rolewe must play on behalf of those we serve. UWBCis bringing Brazoria County leaders from oursector together for an upcoming regionalnonprofit educational opportunity called “Builtfor Texas: The Impact and Opportunity of OurNonprofit Sector.”

It is crucial to understand the significant role thatnonprofits play in our state’s economiclandscape:

The sector employs 600,000 Texans at110,000 organizations, all working hands-on, every day in their communities;Driving over $110 BILLION towards thestate’s GDP;Leveraging almost $5 billion ingovernment dollars as the state contractswith over 100,000 nonprofits;It is responsible for 1 out of every 8(private) Texas jobs;Nonprofits account for $1 out of every$16 dollars changing hands across thestate.

In addition to unveiling new data points likethese, the agenda for the convening will focuson the overall impact of our sector, nonprofitadvocacy (speaking and standing for ourmissions), and how we can use our collectivevoices for the good of our communities.

At United Way of Brazoria County, we want toraise awareness about ALICE (Asset Limited,Income Constrained, Employed); to help thosewho work hard but still need some helpsometimes. If you know an ALICE in BrazoriaCounty, we want to hear your story and theirs!

Please fill out the nomination form at the linkbelow by TUESDAY, MARCH 3, 2020 to nominatesomeone in our community who is an ALICE.

One hardworking ALICE in our community willthen be surprised and awarded $500 for them tospend on basic necessities they may be lacking.

Do you know an ALICE in Brazoria County? ALICEis your childcare worker, your parent on SocialSecurity, the cashier at your supermarket, thegas station attendant, the salesperson at yourbig box store, your waitress, a home health aide,an office clerk. ALICE cannot always pay the bills,has little or nothing in savings, and is forced tomake tough choices such as deciding betweenquality childcare or paying the rent. Oneunexpected car repair or medical bill can pushthese financially strapped families or individualsover the edge.

At VITA Sites, IRS-certified United Wayvolunteers provide free, basic income tax returnpreparation with electronic filing to qualifiedindividuals.

The 2020 tax season marks the 14th year VITAhas been available to residents of BrazoriaCounty. Last year, VITA volunteers helpedresidents save $183,889 in total refunds,$120,659 in total returns, $27,822 in EarnedIncome Tax Credits (EITC), and $34,418 in ChildTax Credits.
