Week 6 Term 3 QUALITY RESPECT RESPONSIBILITY 24 AUGUST 2016
P&C Working Bee All assistance will be really appreciated at the P&C Working Bee to be conducted this Sunday morning throughout our school grounds. With the school fete and local government elections coming up, this is the perfect opportunity to give our school a tidy up so that we look our best. Mrs Bailey is keen to give the ‘water tank garden’ a thorough clean and trim and would appreciate all assistance. It would be great if some people could help freshen up the fixed equipment commonly known as the “Fire Engine”. Repairs to the barriers along the bottom of the fence of Elizabeth Street would go a long way in helping keep the street neat and tidy, as well as reducing the number of small balls lost through the fence. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. The day will kick off around 10.00 am and conclude by 2.00 pm. Simply turn up and see what you can do to assist! Kinder 2017 Information Evening Approximately 50 parents and carers attended Monday night’s presentation by Mr Crowe and Mrs Launders. It is great to see such a positive turnout from our future parents. If you live in zone and you have not yet registered your interest for school for 2017, please do not hesitate in contacting the Office. Issues at School Parents are reminded that if they have concerns regarding student behaviours that they should raise the matter with staff so that appropriate management strategies can be implemented. We have had a number of incidents where parents have spoken directly to children (not their own) which has caused distress and in some cases made a small situation worse. Year 4 Sydney Excursion There are many excited children in our school at present as they eagerly look forward to the Year 4 Sydney excursion. Three fun packed and informative days are planned for our intrepid travellers. All parents and carers are reminded to ensure that participating students are at school by 7:00 am to pack the bus so that the scheduled departure can be achieved. Updates will be posted on the School App throughout the excursion. Please ensure you check the app next Wednesday to receive confirmation on expected arrival times. David Crowe Principal

NSWPSSA Primary School Open Rugby League
Tairawa from Year 6 was selected as part of the Hunter Team that played matches against 7 other teams winning 6 of their games. The Hunter Team was defeated by Sydney West 24 to 16. From these games the NSWPSSA squad was chosen. This then allowed them to play in the State League. Congratulations to Tairawa for making the squad of 34 players.
State League Success!
Two weeks ago, Tairawa helped New South Wales claim the Gary Balkin Cup at the 2016 School Sport Australia 12 years and under rugby league championships.
Played in Canberra, Tairawa ran on as second rower for the NSW Primary School Sports Association (PSSA) team that claimed victory in a tense final against rivals Queensland, 12-6. The week-long championships were hard work for Tairawa, but he ‘made lots of good friends and had heaps of fun’.
The best part of the Championships (apart from playing footy) was when the team went to Questacon and T experienced the ‘Freefall’.
Singleton Public School is very proud of T and we congratulate him on his fine efforts!
Netball Gala Day
On Friday,19 August, approximately 80 children from Singleton Public School walked down to Singleton Netball Courts to compete in the annual St Catherine’s Netball Gala Day. Altogether we had eight teams in the tournament, two senior and junior girls teams, one senior boys team, two junior boys teams and a mixed open team. The children were all wonderfully behaved and Mrs Merrick, Mrs Dibben and Mrs Black were very proud of them! At the end of the day, SPS got 4 placing’s (the teams came either second or third) and one win - the Mixed Open Team. Everyone who competed had a fun day! A big THANK YOU to the wonderful parents that help run the teams on the day – we couldn’t have done it without you!

Zone Public Speaking Competition
During Week 5 our school was represented at the Zone Public Speaking Competition by Abby and Jasmine from Stage 1, Lachlan and Hamish from Stage 2 and Amelia and Amber from Stage 3. Congratulations to all of our speakers, who by all accounts did an outstanding job presenting their speeches at Nulkaba Public School, against nearly forty students in each section. Jasmine was Highly Commended.

Zone Athletics
Students from Singleton Public School participated in the Zone Athletics Carnival last Thursday, 18 August. The students represented the school well and showed great sportsmanship by cheering their team mates on in their races and events. A full report will be in next week’s newsletter.
Spelling Bee
On Wednesday, 17 August, Singleton Public School held the annual Spelling Bee competition in our hall. We had representatives from all Primary classes these included :-
Stage 2 representatives
Lachlan, Kingston, Josh, Indi, Max, Ethan, Jeremy, Nathan, Joe and Madison.
Stage 3 representatives
Coen, Charlotte, Talia, Tupou, Mav, Pania, Zoe, Brock and Breeanna.
They had to spell some very difficult words including quarantine, meniscus and miscreant. Our staff were impressed with their earnestness in attempting to spell words they had never heard before. Our audience were spellbound, pardon the pun, during the competition.
Of course in any competition there are winners and an opportunity to progress to the next round.
Our winners were:
Stage 2
Lachlan and Madison
Stage 3
Coen and Charlotte
Congratulations to all contestants it was a wonderful way to spend an hour.

Snugglepot & Cuddlepie
Last Tuesday Kindergarten and some Year 1 children saw a live theatre production of Snugglepot and Cuddlepie. What a wonderful experience to be in a gorgeous theatre and enjoy seeing actors on stage right before your eyes. We watched as the two characters went out to find "humans" whilst avoiding Mrs Snake and her Big Bad Banksia Man helper. The children have not stopped talking about it and drawing pictures. An experience worth the travel.

Science Week- Paper Planes
We have celebrated Science Week at Singleton Public School with an aerodynamics activity. Aerodynamics involves the study of the properties of moving air and the interaction between the air and solid bodies moving through it. The children designed their own paper planes and enjoyed having a fly off at Recess on Thursday. Lots of children participated in this activity and a lot of fun was had by all while still learning. Mrs Pearce and Mrs Grainger were very impressed with their efforts and their sportsmanship.

Appointments with Teachers
Due to the many commitments of our teaching staff before and after school, it is asked that if you have any concerns regarding your child, please contact the office to leave a message for your child’s teacher to contact you. The mornings are often used for lesson preparation and there are often times when staff need to get away as soon as the afternoon bell goes for after-school meetings, appointments, etc.
Year 4 Sydney Excursion
The students who are attending the Sydney excursion are ask to arrive at the Elizabeth Street entrance from 7.00 am for a 7.30 am departure.
The students are to bring a Backpack with morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea (for the first day only), drink bottle, school hat, pocket money (up to $30), camera (no IPODS, IPADS, phones or DS are to be brought on the excursion), raincoat, sunscreen, tissues.
Students are required to wear full school uniform for the excursion outings and must have a school hat to wear for safety purposes. A final note with all requirements have been sent home with the students.

Opal Cards
The school received a reminder from the HV Buses for students to “tap on” and “tap off” with their Opal Cards every time they catch the bus.
Positive Behaviour for Learning – PBL
“Respectful manners are appreciated” – students can think about “What are manners? When do we use them? How do they make people feel?” and how can they use their manners at school and home.
The Partners in Learning parent feedback survey
This Term, our school will be participating in the Partners in Learning parent survey, another part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent surveys) on student engagement. The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement.
Running this survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements.
The survey is conducted entirely online at home or on public computers. The survey will typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. The parent survey will be conducted between 22 August and 21 October. We will advise when the survey is open at our school. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary, however, your responses are very much appreciated.
More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents.
Canteen News
The Canteen will be closed every Tuesday . The decision was made at the last P&C meeting on 3 August due to being unsuccessful in attracting more volunteers.

HEADS UP ON FETE DAY PARKING
A very important ceremony, the Freedom of Entry to Singleton, will be exercised by the Area Commander and personnel of the Singleton Military Area on Friday, 9 September, 2016. YES, that’s our fete day. Between 300 and 400 soldiers will be forming up in Hunter Street between John Street and the school car park entry from 10:30am to 11.00 am the morning of the fete. There will be no parking along both sides of Hunter Street between John Street and the school car park from 6.00 am to after the parade steps off (about 11:15 am). Please consider this when planning your arrival at school that day. You will need to access parking in Church and Elizabeth Street if you are arriving at the fete prior to 11:15 am.
The Freedom of Entry to Singleton is a significant event and has only been exercised on three previous occasions. The event on 9 September, 2016, will mark the 50th anniversary of the Granting of Freedom of Singleton to the Singleton Military Area. The granting of the Freedom of a City stems from a very ancient custom of medieval Europe. In the 15th century the movement of armed men was a slow and complicated procedure, unless the goodwill of the towns and cities along the route of the march was received. These cities were usually walled and could prevent their use by passing troops. The privilege of entry was known as Freedom of the City and this rare ceremony is now considered the highest compliment that a city or municipality can bestow.
Singleton Public School has a strong, long-term relationship with our School of Infantry and we look forward to cheering the soldiers as they form up in readiness for this parade.
The Parade itself will march down John Street to the Civic Centre so there will be short-term, yet significant interruptions to traffic movements during this 11:00 am to 12:15 pm time frame on the day.
SO REMEMBER, PLAN YOUR PARKING FOR OUR FETE DAY.
