Promoting good Mental Health and wellbeing in kids…. For this term the weekly wellbeing tip will include 10 tips to promote good mental health and wellbeing in kids... According to the Australian Psychological Society, one in seven children experience some type of mental health issue, with ADHD, anxiety and depression being the most common. Having good mental health doesn’t mean kids don’t experience difficulties or worries. Feeling worried, sad or fearful is normal. However, kids who are mentally healthy are equipped to hand many of life’s curve balls that come their way. They also don’t let their emotions overwhelm them. As a result they learn better and have more friends. As a parent, it’s helpful to reflect on the mental health habits that you promote in your children. Tip No. 7: Help them relax

Make sure your child has a hobby or activity that relaxes them. The ability to relax and get away

from the stresses of everyday life is essential. Some children who have real difficulty switching off

may benefit from practicing meditation or mindfulness, but most kids just need time to chill out so

they can relax naturally. We have been exploring and practicing mindfulness at school. The junior

students have been using ‘Mind Yeti’ and the senior students have been using ‘Smiling minds’.

Carmel Small Professional Development Sessions for Writing Last Thursday and Friday, Carmel Small from Nelson Education, ran Professional Development sessions for teachers at Rainbow P-12 andthe Southern Mallee Cluster Schools about teaching children to write using different text types. On Thursday, Carmel worked with several classes to demonstrate to teachers how to best teach Recounts, Persuasive Texts and Information Reports. Teachers were briefed prior and then debriefed after the lessons so that they could gain a better understanding of her methodology. Carmel was very impressed with how the students cooperated and carried out their writing tasks. On Friday, Carmel spent the whole day working with teachers on the explicit teaching of writing and taking a “Whole School Approach” to writing. She pointed out the importance of linking reading with writing. The day was spent looking at good examples of different text types, a whole school Scope and Sequence for writing and how to cater for different ability groups in the classroom.

Book Week This year, Book Week was celebrated with the senior students coming over to the Junior School to read their favourite books together with the younger students. It was wonderful to see the children so engaged in this activity and they enjoyed having the opportunity to share their books.

Cross- Age Tutoring In Mathematics This term the students in Miss Teasdale’s Year 7 Mathematics class have been preparing Mathematics games for the students in the Prep/1/2 classes. The older students have enjoyed working with the younger students and seeing their reaction to learning about Mathematics in a fun way. This certainly has been a win-win situation with both age groups benefitting from the activities.

Science Activities It has been wonderful to see our P-12 students working so well together. Recently the Year 7 & 8 Science students researched a number of Science experiments to demonstrate to the Junior School students. The children were put into groups and rotated around a variety of experiments such as- How Rain is made, How to shrink packets to make mini packages, making a rocket and many others. The senior students were very thorough with their preparation and presentation to the younger students. All students enjoyed their Science experiences and learnt a lot through these basic experiments.

PMP- Perceptual Motor Program During this term the Prep/1/2 students have been involved in a variety of motor exercises and activities to improve the stu-dents fine and gross motor skills in the PMP program. A number of stations are set up for the students to rotate around that are designed to specifically improve certain skills. The students are assessed on how they have managed these activities. Mrs Huff has been running the program with the assistance of Mrs Petschel.
