A Tata Visit By Alan Talbott, President

According to AutoWeek, Ratan Tata, CEO of

Tata Motors made an across the US whirlwind

visit to a large number Jaguar dealers in June.

He questioned the dealers about their day to day

operations covering all aspects of the dealers

business. Apparently he listened and noted the

answers as well. The dealers had never seen

anyone from upper management in Ford let alone

the “top factory decision maker”. Dealers were

impressed with his warmth and understanding

and the trip did a much to create enthusiasm for

the brand. They will need it.

Not with standing, the XF, Jaguars sales have

diminished over the years. Figures from 2002 to

2007 show Jaguar sales of 61,204 in 2002 and by

2007 it was 15,683 in the US only. Needed, is

the re-design of the XJ, due in 2010, and a sports

car which is supposedly back on the table. Both

would enhance the XF, which is doing very well

in a down automotive market.

Mr. Tata is also facing a dilemma with the

Nano $2500 car they want in production by next

year. It is a price specific vehicle in a time when

raw materials are trending up rapidly due to

petroleum. Hard to hold a price down when your

suppliers have no option but to raise them.

Tata’s stock is down further as some analysts

believe he has bitten off more than he can chew.

In June AJS members shrugged off $4.50/gal

prices for fuel and motored on up to Blue Ridge

for a day tour. Hopefully our carbon footprint

wasn’t too bad that day because we had a great

time. We meandered our way thru some curvy

back roads in north Georgia to the Toccoa

Riverside restaurant out in the sticks south of town. The restaurant itself is a huge pine

structure located right at water’s edge of the

Toccoa River. Our luncheon room over looked

said river with a delightful view and some of the

best food in the mountains. We spent the

afternoon in downtown Blue Ridge shopping for

antiques and other worldly goods. We had a fun

crowd of people, the Jags got their usual stares

and we had some great ice cream. Thanks to

Kim Daly for putting everything together.

Our June monthly meeting at Aldo’s was a

more raucous crowd (especially the women), so

if you like to have a good raucous time Aldo’s is

the place.

Please RSVP to Beverlee Leo 770-949-6775

or [email protected]. Look forward to

seeing you there!

Cheers!

JUNE'S CORNER Member News

By June Mindrup, Health & Hospitality Director

R. Barry and Janet Morgan, Marietta,

Georgia, recently joined our group. They drive a

2004 XJR (Platinum) and were first time

attendees at the June meeting.

John S. "Jack" Gibson, Smyrna, Georgia, is

also a new member. Jack, a retiree from

Lockheed, drives a 2008 Radiance Red S-Type.

Incidentally, it's the picture of his car featured in

the member’s car of the month. Welcome

aboard.

Don and Marlene Hart will be embarking on

a 2-week Mediterranean Cruise which will

include stops in Italy, Barcelona, South France,

and Tunisia. This event is to celebrate their 50th

Wedding Anniversary. (They must have gotten

married when in kindergarten!!)

Deb Walton will be a Grandmother for the

first time in February. The little bundle of joy

will arrive in Tampa, Florida so no doubt there

will be many trips to S.W. Florida next year.

Deborah and Frank Coyne had only ecstatic

reports of their trip to Italy. Deborah's language

lessons equipped her to converse quite well with

all her Italian family.

Guy Gunter celebrated his 90th Birthday on

June 6th. Happy Birthday - and may you

celebrate many more such occasions.

The first session of l7 shows of "Land of

Spirit" folk lore play was completed in Lavonia,

Georgia. Rachel Morrison is a sponsor of this

endeavor and her friend, Tommy Scott, (a

Page 5: Newsletter - The Car Nut, Inc.Tata Motors made an across the US whirlwind visit to a large number Jaguar dealers in June. He questioned the dealers about their day to day operations

performer) was inducted into the International

Music history Hall of Fame and Museum.

June and Jim Mindrup went to Oak Ridge,

Tennessee to attend the wedding of Jim's nephew

over the July 4th weekend. It was also a kind of

family reunion as all of Jim's 3 children plus a

Granddaughter and her family were attending.

Don't forget to make your reservation to

attend AJS's weekend trip to Helen, Georgia on

August 23rd. It's bound to be a fun time.

Future Activities Kim Daly, Activities Director

First of all, I would like to thank Alan

Talbott for leading our group of nineteen to Blue

Ridge last month. It was a beautiful day for a

drive, and Alan made it all the more special by

taking us along the less traveled roads of north

Georgia. We stopped for a delicious lunch

alongside the Toccoa River and then spent the

afternoon browsing through many of the shops in

Blue Ridge.

This month, we will stay much closer to

home. We are going to go to the Fernbank

Museum, once again, for Martinis and IMAX on

Friday, July 25th

. We will gather downstairs

about 6:30 where we will have cocktails and a

light dinner while visiting with fellow AJS

members and listening to the live music. At

9:00, we will view the IMAX movie Wild

Ocean, which was filmed off the coast of South

Africa. This film features undersea wildlife and

you will see breaching whales as well as feeding

sharks and diving gannets on the IMAX large

screen.

To attend this event, there is no need to

RSVP to me, but you should reserve your seats

for the movie ahead of time as many of the

IMAX movies sell out. Please call the Fernbank

at 404-929-6400 to purchase your tickets. Call

me if you have any questions about this event.

Please mark your calendars for our annual

lake party, which will take place this year on

Saturday, September 27th

at Ivan and Myrna

Ruiz’s, lake house on Lake Lanier. Watch for

details in subsequent newsletters.

Helen Overnight Trip

Charles Frangiamore and Don Hart have put

together an overnighter to Helen, GA, August

23-24 for AJS. While it seems early for this to

be in the newsletter they worked hard to come up

with an upscale Hampton Inn, on the river, for

our stay, and we need to get the word out for the

room reservations. The Hampton has put an

exclusive website up just for us to make those

reservations and you can reach it at:

http://hamptoninn.hilton.com/en/hp/groups/perso

nalized/HLNGAHX-AJS-20080823/index.jhtml

Special rates apply for us so you MUST use

the site to get them. We’ll be touring up to

Helen on the 28th arriving at Unicoi State park

for a buffet lunch. Then, Anna Ruby Falls in the

afternoon, with shopping in Helen’s Bavarian

Village later in the day. Dinner at the Hofbrau

Restaurant, again on the river, will complete the

day. Make your reservations now for a lovely

weekend in the mountains!
