ST PAUL’S PRIMARY SCHOOL, MT LAWLEY - FROM DARKNESS INTO LIGHT - 1 NEWSLETTER TERM 4 WEEK 4 November 5 2015 PRINCIPAL’S PERSPECTIVE Dear Members of the St Paul’s Community School Fun Run Our annual School Fun Run this Wednesday was a huge success. Congratulations to all the children who ran, skipped or walked the distance. Our thanks go to Jesse Yock, for coordinating, the two events - one in the school grounds for the younger children and the other at Ron Stone Park for the older students. Many thanks go to the staff for supervising their classes and to the parents who were able to come along and encourage the children. Through the generosity of your sponsors, we managed to raise $3314, which will be divided between the Holy Angels Hostel in Kalyanpur, India and the purchase of PE equipment. Please see further into the newsletter for some great photos. All Saints Day Parish/School Mass The All Saints Day Mass on Sunday was great fun. It was heart-warming to see so many children dressed in costumes and getting into the spirit of the day. Thank you to the Year 4 class and their parents for hosting the Mass and providing morning tea afterwards. World Teachers' Day On behalf of the staff, I would like to extend a big thank you to Care Salfinger and the P&F for providing us with a “surprise” morning tea on Friday to celebrate World Teachers’ Day. The staff really appreciated this thoughtful gesture and they treasured all the generous acknowledgements they received from the students and parents. Family Fun Day - Sunday 8 November We are all looking forward to the Family Fun Day, on Sunday 8 November, and hope to see as many families there as possible. Our sincere thanks go to all the parents who have been working behind the scenes to prepare for the day. Special thanks go to Clare Salfinger and Beck Hampson for coordinating this special “fun” and fundraising event. Staff Changes for 2016 Congratulaons to Catherine Nguyen, who has been seconded to the Catechist Team of Catholic Education WA (CEWA) for 2016. We wish Catherine all the best in her new position and look forward to her return in 2017. I am pleased to announce that Mr Mark Fitzpatrick will be teaching the Year 4 class and coordinating the 1:1 Mac Book project for 2016. Mr Fitzpatrick is an experienced teacher and comes to us highly recommended from Our Lady of Good Council Primary School, Karrinyup, where he has carried out a similar role. Mr Fitzpatrick is very keen to join us at St Paul’s and, as he is currently on Long Service Leave, from his current school, he took the opportunity to get to know the students at St Paul’s by taking the Year 6 class today, while Mr Yock is attending professional development. I’m sure you will join me in welcoming Mr Fitzpatrick to St Paul’s. Remembrance Day Service This year 11 November marks the 97th anniversary of the Armisce which ended the First World War (1914–18). On this day, Australians observe one minute of silence at 11am, in memory of those who died or suffered in all wars. Students will parcipate in a prayer service on Wednesday 11 November at 10:45am in the Barbier Hall to commemorate this special occasion. Parents are welcome to aend. Reconciliation Retreat Day: Tuesday 17 November (Parish Undercroft Area)

St Vincent de Paul Society Christmas Appeal 2015

In Term Four, our Social Justice focus will be the St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal. St

Vincent de Paul has provided us with a list of families as a guide to help students compile

hampers. This provides students with a particular focus on the families in our community who

struggle financially throughout the year, but especially during Christmas.

Over the next few weeks, your child will come home with suggested items for donation. We

encourage you to discuss the true meaning of Christmas with your children and join us in

offering an alternative to families who would otherwise go without.

It is important to remember that hampers must contain non-perishable food items that are in

date and in good condition. Please do not include any chocolate items, as St Vincent de Paul

does not have refrigeration facilities.

St Vincent de Paul has also requested food voucher donations to assist families. Financial

donations and gift cards are the most versatile gift that can be given to the Society, as these

donations can be used in response to areas of need. If you decide to make a financial or gift

card donation, please send these directly to the front office. Please send in donations no later

than Friday 20 November.

Thankyou for your continued support. Know that in giving, we help create greater compassion,

respect and dignity for those who need a helping hand this Christmas.

IT NEWS

IT in Pre Primary

In Term 4 we have been doing a lot of our Numeracy and Literacy on the Interactive Whiteboard.

We have read alphabet stories, learnt CVC words, seen and compared Fairy Tales, completed Num-

ber stories, learnt TIME-(o’clock) both analogue and digital and used our TIMER to estimate time

when we have been packing away.

Every morning we complete our “I am at school today” calendar.

Below are some photos of our learning.

SWIMMING LESSONS 2015

As part of the Physical Education programme, all children in Years One to Six will be attending compulsory swimming lessons at Bayswater Waves beginning on Monday 23 November and concluding Friday 27 November 2015.

This year all classes from Year One to Year Six will have five 45min lessons. Students will be bussed to and from the Bayswater Waves pool under the supervision of their class teachers. Lessons will be conducted by qualified instructors, using the Royal Lifesaving Vacswim stages.

Each child is required to have bathers (worn under uniform to school each day), a towel and a pair of slip-on footwear (to be worn to and from the pool only) for each lesson. Goggles are optional, but highly recommended. All items are to be carried to and from the pool in a clearly labelled swimming or plastic bag.

PLEASE clearly label every item of clothing including bathers, towel, goggles, shoes, socks and underwear. We cannot be responsible for lost items of clothing. Please complete the enrolment form for each child (sent home this week) and return it to your child’s class teacher by Friday 13 November. Any difficulties regarding attendance of lessons should be sent in writing, with an attached medical certificate, to the Principal.

The students are not allowed to wear thongs / flip flops to school. Children will change into their slip-on footwear before they leave for the pool and put their uniform footwear on when they return to school.

SCHOOL BANKING REWARDS

The Commonwealth Bank at the end of last term recalled some rewards due to the small batteries that were inside and

could be harmful to small children if swallowed. These were the Cosmic Light Beam Torch and the Lunar Light Band. This has put pressure on the stocks of the other rewards and consequently the Glow-in-the-Dark Solar System is also no longer available. The bank have added on to the reward list some items from 2013 and 2014 to replace the ones that are no longer avail-able.

Current Rewards Available are: Galaxy Glider - new item Intergalactic Rocket Invisible Ink Pens Knuckles Game - 2013 reward item Outer Space Savers Money Box Scented Pencils - 2014 reward item Shark keyring - 2014 reward item Swim Bag - 2014 reward item

I will try to get pictures of the new and old rewards to help the children make their decision. I know some children were disappointed in not being able to redeem the reward they were saving for, however the bank have never had reward items recalled before so we really appreciate your patience and understanding.

TERM 3 WINNER!!

The School Banking program had a competition in Term 3 where children could win lots of fantastic prizes when they made 3 or more deposits. St Paul’s have a winner to one of these prizes and this will be announced and presented at this Friday’s assembly!! Don’t miss it! If you have any queries, please don't hesitate to contact me on [email protected]
