PRINCIPAL’S NEWS
Welcome back to term 4 2019, I can’t believe we’re into term 4 already. This term is an extremely busy one with events. We have primary camp this week, transition visit for our year 10’s to Isis District State High School next week Thursday/Friday (Week 3), Grandparents day (Week 4), 2020 Prep transitions starting in week 3, free dress days, rewards day activities - surfing for Year 10’s and waterpark for Prep’s- Yr 9, 2020 student leadership speeches, Xmas parties, Year 10 formal, graduation parades and awards night, and not to mention all of the learning and assessment that needs to take place between now and the end of the year.
VOCAB-WORD OF THE WEEK
This week students in both the primary school and high school have been introduced to their new vocab in our Word of the Week program. The WOW (Word of the Week) in the Primary is adventurous. The high school will focus on cognitive verbs. The high school WOW is identify, describe and explain. Vocabulary is a strong indicator of student success (Baker, Simmons, & Kame'enui, 1997).
GOALS
All students have been working with their teachers to develop goals for reading and behaviour. Please ask your child what their goals are and what work they are doing to reach their goals. The whole school reading goals are: Being able to talk about your favourite book and author, Reading for a sustained period of time (up to 20 minutes) and being able to talk about what you have read.
REWARDS DAY
At the end of each term the school puts on a rewards day/activities for students who have been managing their behaviour throughout the term. On Parade on Monday, I outlined the criteria that students need to meet to be able to participate in the rewards day activities. The criteria to attend the rewards day is as follows:
All assessment completed and handed in
At least 4 mighty merit cards completed
Appropriate behaviour including no suspensions or withdrawals
No Buddy Class refusals
Correct wearing of the uniform
Greater than 90% attendance
The rewards activities this term will be a surfing experience for our graduating year 10’s and a water park visit for Prep’s to year 9. Have a great week. Mr Weir Principal

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING (PBL)
BIG ON LEARNING – PERSUE MY PERSONAL BEST
At Biggenden State School we are Big on Learning when we pursue our personal best no matter who we work with. This is important for us to learn because when we pursue our personal best we feel confident in ourselves and we stay motivated to keep going. We are learning that we don’t come to school to be better than others. We come to school to better ourselves by being able to work with others. This is achieved by working on strategies such as;
We don’t compare ourselves to others. We help others to be involved. We don’t always have to work with our
friends. We compete against ourselves. We listen to others ideas. We persist when it is hard. We understand that it can take hard work and
effort to achieve what we want. We know that being better than others at
something does not make us a better person. We work with people with different strengths
and weaknesses.
We are going to be examining personal attributes that help us work with others and pursue our personal best. Some of these attributes are being persistent, hardworking, tolerant, friendly and cooperative. All of these are important for us to learn about and practice in our daily lives.
