NEWSLETTER ~ TERM 3 ~ No. 2 ~ 30 July 2020 FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK - Aaron Richards Learner-Led Conferences - Learner-led conferences provide children with an opportunity to celebrate their learning with their parents. The conferences take place on the 3rd and 4th of August. The Junior Teachers (Year 1- 4) will contact parents to organise a conference time. An invitation has been sent out to the families of children in the senior team (Year 5-8) to make an online booking. Please note that children who have not been enrolled at school for at least one year will not have a conference. If parents of children in their first year at school would like to discuss their child’s learning, they should contact the homeroom teacher. Although conferences have been taking place at St Joseph’s School since 2008, and are common in schools around the country, I am aware that the conferences are a new experience for parents with younger children. To assist parents to prepare and participate in the conference, I have developed a Parent Guide for Assessing and Learning Learner Achievement. This is included in this newsletter. Written Report - The Mid-Year Written Report will be provided to parents at the Learner-Led Conference. The report is a brief summary of student achievement in the core subjects of Religious Education, Reading, Writing and Mathematics. A Parent Guide for Reading the Written Report has been developed to help parents understand this document. This parent guide will be sent home to parents and caregivers on Monday morning in preparation for the Learner-Led Conferences. Pop Up Penguin - On 4th August St Joseph’s School will host representatives from the International Antarctic Centre. During their visit the school will be presented Antarctic Academy Certificates for online and experiential learning. They will also be presenting a pop up penguin. The pop up penguin is similar to the giraffes that popped up after the Christchurch earthquakes. Over the next month the Year 7-8 students will be responsible for decorating the penguin. The decorated penguin will be relocated around the city to reinforce the message that it is an important time for animals on the ice during COVID-19. I would like to thank Miranda Satterthwaite, the staff from the International Antarctic Centre and the Year 7-8 collaboration for providing us the opportunity to have this honour of being part of this project. Board News - The Board of Trustees welcomes Erin Kreft to the Board. Erin will take up the Staff Trustee position. Sporting Events - The Year 7-8 Winter competition started last week. The school has a number of rugby, football, hockey and netball teams that travel away from school every Friday. Last week the St Joseph’s school Year 8 basketball teams travelled to Pioneer Stadium to participate in the Christchurch School’s Basketball Tournament. The teams represented the school at a very high standard and should be proud of their efforts. Unfortunately the Christchurch Winter Sport tournament has been cancelled this year. With news of this cancellation St Joseph’s School Papanui and St Francis of Assisi School in Mairehau have decided to run their own winter tournament. This event will take place next Wednesday at St Joseph’s School. The tournament sees the top teams for hockey, rugby, football and netball play each other. Scout Scarf Day - It is Scout Scarf day on Monday 3 August. Children who attend Scouts can wear their scarfs at school on this day. Zone Cross Country - On Tuesday, representatives from St Joseph’s School participated in the North Zone Cross Country at Murchison Park. Considering it was a very chilly day all the children did very well and should be proud of their efforts. Congratulations to the following children who have qualified for the Canterbury Cross Country competition that will take place in a couple of weeks. A notice will be sent home with those who have qualified for this competition. Year 8: Adam Robertson, Cooper McDowall, Max Corry, Nick Weir, Jorja Rennell, Quinn Baker, Molly Maynard and Gabrielle Segar. Year 7: Lachlan Bendall, George Robertson, Christian Clark, Harry Gorman, Claudia Vivian, Matilda Maynard, Subin Bae and Annabel Skinner Year 6: Rory Webster, Samuel Roughan and Emma Corry. Year 5: Lachie Walsh, Grace Ford and Charlotte McLaughlan.

In Sympathy We offer our deepest sympathy to Annabel (McA4), Claudia (K1) and Phoebe (A1) Skinner on the death of their grandfather, and also to George Kneebone (McAuley 3) whose aunty

passed away this week. Our thoughts and prayers are with them and their families at this sad time.

Faith Fact - Week 2 ~ 27—31 July based on “Our Faith, Our Future” (a pastoral letter from Bishop Paul Martin SM) outlining his vision for the future of the diocese.

‘The courage I see in your lives as you embrace change, living in love through the pain of family and work transitions, gives me courage as your bishop to face necessary diocesan pastoral restructuring decisions.’

special time in their faith journey.

First Holy Communion is the third

sacrament that most of these

children will have received.

It is expected to be a full church for

this celebration in our Parish. All

welcome to attend, however, the front rows will be
