During the next week teachers will be preparing Work Completion reports that provide a snapshot of whether

students are up to date with task completion and working to the level of their capabilities.

Students will be issued with their individual Work Completion reports during the following week (6). Please discuss

with your child what the Work Completion report is saying – “Are they up to date with class work and are they

working to a level to which they are capable?”

An integral component of keeping up to date with work and consolidating the learning from classes, is to undertake

study outside of the classroom – doing homework. To support themselves with this aspect many students are

accessing the Study & Enrichment Centre, operating every Monday to Thursday from 3-5pm (Jointly funded and

operated by the College, Polly Farmer & CDU Into Uni programs).

Ongoing tutoring and mentoring support is available to all students to undertake study and complete tasks, along

with a healthy afternoon tea and a bus ride home if needed.

With exams and the end of many semester length courses rapidly coming up, we encourage all students to access

the excellent support available at the after class Study & Enrichment Centre. See the attached advertisement and

encourage participation as appropriate.

Outstanding music performance – Well done Silva!!

Congratulations to Year 12 student Silva Landers who recently won second prize (soloist section)

In the NT Battle of the Bands final in Darwin. Silva won a $500 gift voucher from a music shop.

Silva very narrowly missed first place which went to another Alice Springs VET student Michael

Lindsay. Well done Silva and VET Music lecturer Cain Gilmour.

The SRC is a way for students:-

� to express ideas and provide feedback from students to the College Leadership

� to participate in making decisions about life at the College

� to assist in the organisation of events and activities for students and staff

� to be involved in community and fundraising activities.

Energy Drinks

What do they really do?

• gives a short boost of energy, rather than a sustained release of energy

• provides concentration for a short period of time

• extremely dangerous if you have an undetected heart condition

(30% more likely to affect Indigenous people)

• can be toxic to the body

• can cause heart attack and sometimes death

• causes addiction

Out of all of the ingredients in energy drinks it’s the amount of caffeine that can be responsible for feeling:

Dizzy, irritable, dehydrated, nauseous, nervousness (jitters).

Allergic reactions: rash, hives, itching, tightness of chest, swelling, diarrhoea, headaches & fatigue.

It is for these reasons that ENERGY DRINKS are NOT ALLOWED at the College.

As part of the College’s wellbeing programme students from all year levels recently

attended a multimedia presentation by Motivational Media. The focus of this highly engaging

three screen video presentation was Impact – leaving your mark on the world. Through the

stories of five young people students were introduced to the idea that as we navigate the

obstacles and seize the opportunities presented to us, we need to be aware that how we

respond to these events, the decisions we make and the pathways that we choose define who

we are. Follow up discussion occurred in coaching groups. It could be interesting to ask your

student what they gained out of the presentation.

What does this mean? It means the College has :

* Implemented strategies to minimise the triggers associated with

asthma attacks.

* Aerosols (including deodorant) are banned at school. Please use a roll

on. (This information is also available in the student handbook).

* All staff are trained in Asthma Emergency First Aid. Emma Secombe

Applying for a Tax File Number

Students needing a Tax File Number (TFN) for employment, applying for Centrelink benefits or opening a bank

account can apply through Centralian Senior College. The application form is available from Ann Goodwin, the

College’s Course, Career and Transition Adviser. All information provided on the application form will remain

confidential. Students will receive their TFN via a notification letter sent to their postal address within 28 days of the

application being received by the Australian Tax Office.

VET Certificate II in Tourism class

On Tuesday 22 April a group of Tourism Certificate II students attended an excursion to the Reptile Centre. Their

amiable host, Rex Niendorf, was a wealth of information on reptiles and particularly on the habitats and behavioural

characteristics of snakes found in Australia’s Central Desert region. The class was taught some important tips on how

to deal with snake bites, an aspect they will hopefully not have to utilise in any future work in the Tourism industry.

Stage 1 and 2 Dance Parents and Caregivers

As part of the Stage 1 and 2 Dance program, students will be studying a variety of choreographic and performance

aspects, and will be expected to make a commentary on them in the form of an essay on contemporary issues in

dance. In order to complete work, students will need to see a live performance by a current dance company to help

with their understanding of current trends in dance.

For this reason, an outside of school hours excursion to see ‘Controlled Falling Project’ by This Side Up Acrobatics has

been organised. Please see details below and complete the permission slip distributed in class. While the cost of

tickets is $35 per person, as this forms part of assessment research, the College is covering the majority of the cost,

asking families to contribute $10. It is extremely important that students understand this, and attend the

performance unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Girls Academy – Term 2 Overview

Girls Academy have had a good start to the year, and has a busy Term 2 ahead. Students from Girls Academy will be

participating in the upcoming Clontarf Rugby League event on Friday 9 May. Our girls will be playing OZ Tag, which

will be the first game of the night, against Stronger Sisters from Tennant Creek. Girls have been training and getting

prepared for the game. Their game will be starting at 5pm, followed by other Rugby games from the Clontarf

Academies from Alice Springs and Tennant Creek. It is going to be a great night and everyone is welcome to come

down and watch, with our girls playing the first game at 5pm at Anzac Oval.

In week 7, we will be holding our Mother/Daughter Nutrition Program. This runs over the whole day, and 5 Mother’s

and Daughter’s will come in and continue to acquire more knowledge around making healthier choices and healthy

living.

In week 10, ten girls will be selected for the annual Perth Academy Showcase. This is held every year, and all of the

Girls Academies from across Australia go to Perth for a Basketball Tournament against other academies. The

selected girls chosen for the trip must be attending at least 85% and be up to date in all of their classes with all of

their school work. This is one of our big events for the year, and we are looking forward to it.

Tjungu Festival Camp – Yulara

The ANZAC Day long weekend saw Centralian SC Clontarf Academy head off on their first camp of the term, with 9

lads heading down to Yulara for the Tjungu Indigenous Cultural Festival. The group spent ANZAC Day checking out

Uluru, taking in key sites and learning about traditional cultural values including local law, history and custom. In the

evening they braved the crowds to take in a fantastic Uluru sunset before heading back to the accommodation to

put together a classic spaghetti bolognaise.

The next day the lads were met by Joanne Turner of the National Indigenous Training Academy who gave them a

guided tour of Yulara and ran them through the resort’s traineeship program. The lads were lucky enough to have on

hand Clontarf Alumni Shane McMasters and Liam Presley, who along with Ronald Dodd have excelled in this

program since finishing school. Shane was especially helpful in giving the group some personal perspective on what

to expect should they sign up for the program.

After lunch a number of the boys suited up for the Yulara Flys alongside former AFL star Michael O’Loughlin. The Flys

were taking on the Mutitjulu Cats for the Yulara Cup. In the end it was the Clontarf boys whose speed and flair was

the difference in pushing the Flys to a 21 point victory. Those that didn’t play demonstrated fantastic spirit in

supporting their teammates from the sidelines and running water for both teams.

To finish the day off the boys enjoyed a hearty beef stew before heading back into the festival to see headline acts

Warren H Williams and Casey Donovan perform. In all, the trip was a great success as the lads conducted themselves

at all times with the pride, dignity and respect expected of senior students.

Harmony Day celebrations - Together We Can

Our College recently celebrated Harmony Day – a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home –

from the traditional owners of this land to those who have come from many countries around the world. By

participating in Harmony Day activities, we learn and understand how all Australians from diverse backgrounds

equally belong to our nation and enrich it.

Setting the scene for Harmony Day lunch activities on last day of term – Friday 4 April, Anne Channing’s Year 12

Society & Culture / Integrated Learning students gave an excellent and engaging presentation “Valuing Harmony” to

a Year 11 & 12 assembly in the theatrette.

Lunch activities comprised a wide range of student music and dance performances, art displays including Post It Note

Art in Action and Year 11 Creative Projects students selling T-shirts and Harmony Day flags. Healthy refreshments,

BBQ sausage sizzle and fruit cup were enjoyed by all. See page 7 of this newsletter for photographs of our

celebrations.

Thanks to all organisers, performers and participants for all efforts in making our Harmony Day celebrations such an

outstanding success – it certainly showed Together We Can.



Gateways Gossip

Our Gateways students have been very busy thus far getting into all their work. Many have managed to fix up and

finish off some creative work and also completed some very productive academic studies. This term our students

had the opportunity to meet and have a discussion with the Rugby players from the Parramatta Eels which was both

exciting and a fantastic opportunity.

In Genevieve O’Loughlin’s Music Class there has been much excitement with students showing off their vocal and

instrumental talents. It’s amazing to see such wonderful talent in and around our College and we encourage our

students and staff to take the opportunity to drop by and see the wonderful talents of many of our students when

they are performing for the different assessment tasks.
