Message from Mr Graaf This end-of-term message reflects on the many achievements of the learners of our school. The year started with the wonderful 2019 Matric results, with billboards proclaiming that “GHS rules the roost”. Our Academic Awards ceremony was a triumph, made all the more special by our alumnus and Guest of Honour, Dr Sarah Dlamini, who delivered an inspiring speech on HOPE in dark times. Little did we know how important her message would become. 2020 saw the appointment of Miss Therusha Naicker to the position of Deputy Principal, and Mr Noelin Naidoo as Head of Department. In addition, the school appointed some wonderful new academic staff, and learning and teaching began on day one. The early closing of the first term at the instruction of the President of the country, as a measure to curb the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic, will have an effect on the academic programme and our proposed centenary celebrations. However, as a school community, we are pulling together just as we have in the last 100 years when faced with numerous threats and challenges, including World War 11 and the H1N1 (Swine flu) epidemic. We remain optimistic that 2020 will be a wonderful year. The programme for our centenary year is filled with exciting and diverse activities. A school turns 100 only once, and we are determined to celebrate. We have adopted, as our Centenary Anthem, “Won’t give up on you” by Andy Grammar, and we have already raised the roof with our singing. Our big green heart is beating proudly and we continue to live up to our motto ‘Cheerfulness with Industry’. An achievement that deserves special mention is that of Melonie Croeser and Olivia Woodburne, both in Grade 10, participating in the Dusi Canoe Marathon. They finished triumphantly, coming 3rd in the U/18 women’s category and 1st in the U/16 section. This made us all feel so proud that GHS girls who put their mind to something, with courage, can achieve great things. I cannot project what Term 2 will look like. What we do know is that we return on 14 April 2020. Academic staff have gone out of their way to ensure that the girls have been given work to do in the days ahead. Parents and learners are urged to consult the D6 Communicator regularly. It remains our most important means of communication, and should be consulted during this extended break. I pray for the safety and good health of our entire GHS community, and look forward to a happy and productive second term. ISSUE 1 GHS NEWS -Reset. Rebuild. Reconnect- PAGE 1
