A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

The recent meeting at Amelia Island Plantation was one of the smaller meetings for the USDTA group.

However, in terms of enjoyment it was off the scale. We learned as a group, played as a group and even dined

as a group. In fact this is what this organization is about. The speakers on oral pathology, minor orthodontic

tooth movement, and round table discussion among current USDTA members were well received. We even

had a lecture from the Senior Editor of Tennisone.com. We hope to return to Amelia sometime in the future.

anticipate that this meeting will be well attended. Please be on the lookout for an early registration discount.

The speaker topics will be on Essential Surgical and Restorative Procedures for a Successful General Practice;

Critical Things to Know About the Materials and Techniques Used by Your Laboratory, Helping You Choose the

Right Product From Your Laboratory; Uses of a CT scan for helping diagnose TMD, Orthodontic, and restorative

cases; Occlusally Driven Treatment Planning.

I can’t wait to see you all in Hawai’i and enjoy the same camaraderie we had in Amelia Island.

Amelia Island Plantation at a glance

When you arrive at Amelia Island Plantation, you are greeted with beautiful trees and ponds surrounding the grounds.

The Shops & Spa are walking distance or a short bike ride away. The USDTA group was all situated at the Racket Park

Tennis Villas which made it easy to walk to the tennis courts and conference center daily. The week of lectures began

with a tennis clinic from David Smith, Senior Editor of TennisOne.com. He brought Dunlop rackets to demo and gave

great instruction on the court and in the lecture. The week continued with outstanding lectures and a round table

discussion.

The tennis completed without any major injuries (besides Jeff Wallace hurting his shoulder on the Sunday mixer, he was

back on the courts by the end of the week. Oh, and Dennis Dierenfield falling off the Segway, but that is a whole other

story!) All matches were finished by Thursday allowing a free day for excursions and relaxation. Some took advantage

of the beautiful bike trails around the resort, some took a Segway tour, or went searching for sharks teeth on the beach.

A couple of the highlights was being able to dine together as a group every night. There was

always great food and conversation during dinners and the mid-week cocktail party. The other

highlight was watching the kids fish for crabs and grass shrimp. The Nature Center was a daily

stop off to feed the turtles and we were fortunate enough to witness a water turkey “fishing” for

food and speared a blue gill with its bill! Amazing!

Overall, it was a very successful meeting. We hope to see you all in Hawaii in November!

For those of you who made it to the beautiful Amelia Island Plantation for our April convention, we were treated to a

lecture by Dave Smith, the Senior Editor for TennisOne.com and the author of two top-rated tennis books, TENNIS

MASTERY and COACHING MASTERY. Dave is also the author of the new Walt Disney mystery, HIDDEN MICKEY and a new

DVD, “Building a World-Class Volley.” For those who would like to purchase any of these items, (as he sold out of each

that he had brought to the convention), you may purchase them by writing Dave directly: Dave Smith-TNT Tennis, P.O.

Box 911232 St. George, UT 84791. Mention you are a USDTA member and he will give you the same “Show Special”

pricing on all the books and DVD’s. ($20 for the tennis books and DVD’s, $10 for the Disney book.) Regular pricing is $29

& $24 for the Tennis Books, $39 for the DVD, and $13 for the Disney book…so these are a significant savings! For more

information, you may contact Dave at: [email protected]. He would enjoy hearing from any of you that attended the

lecture!

Amelia Island Plantation Lecture Review

David Smith started the week off with a Dunlop racket demo and clinic on Sunday and

continued with a lecture on fundamentals on the tennis court. He gave information on all

parts of the game including strokes, footwork, common faults, and strategies, both mental and

physical. Most importantly he stressed having the foundation to satisfy our goals to allow the

best tennis in us to emerge.

~ C. Lee

Tuesday’s lecture was given by Dr. Larry Chiswell and the topic was

on Oral Pathology. Dr. Chiswell took an often dull and boring subject and brought it to life

with interaction with the audience and humorous shorts from television shows to make his

point. He discussed the ten principles of diagnosing any oral lesion and then talked about

the proper listing of questions to ask the patients. His discussion was both informative and

entertaining for everyone.

~ J. Lynch

The educational seminar on Wednesday consisted of a round table discussion presented by Dr. R. Buzz DeFelice, Dr. Bob

Jones, Dr. Dave Christensen, and Dr. Lucian Kahan. Presentations were also made by

Bien Air, Dentsply Raintree Essix, Sonicare, Zimmer Dental, and Sunstar. Topics ranged

from selective dental cases to hand pieces and oral hygiene aids.

~ R. Fox

Doctors Stanley Presley and Jaimee Morgan spoke about

Minor Tooth Movement by use of ACE plastic. Minor

tooth movement is a valuable tool to the restorative

dentist. Use of the Essix plastics for in office aligned fabrication helps deliver fast,

predictable minor tooth movement. ~J. Wallace

Speakers for the Grand Wailea

November 7-13, 2010

Dr. Mayeda has the distinguished honor of living and practicing for more than 25 years on the

beautiful island of Maui in Hawaii. He is one of the only 5% of dentists in the United States to

perform both the surgical and prosthetic stages of implant dentistry. Since 1982, Dr. Mayeda

has continually participated in courses in advanced Cosmetic and Implant procedures. Because

of his depth of knowledge and advanced techniques, people have come from all over the world

to seek his consultation and treatment. A past President of the American Academy of Cosmetic

Dentistry, Dr. Mayeda uses the most advanced techniques to correct decayed, crooked,

chipped, discolored or missing teeth -- improving health and overall appearance. He is

committed to improve his patients' smile, self-confidence and general health.

Dr. Maurice Hokama graduated from Casa Loma Institute of Technology (former UCLA extension

school), and went to work soon after in the Loma Linda University School of Dentistry Residency

Program. He was the only technician for four Residents and worked under the direction of Dr.

Paul Richardson who headed the Residency Program. Dr. Hokama received his Board

Certification as a Prosthodontist and has continued for over thirty years. He has recently re-

opened his own lab in Southern California, because he wanted to "play" with some of the

new materials that had become available.

Dr. Kaspers attended the United States Naval Academy, 1972-1974, before he was transferred

to and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Northwestern University in 1977. He graduated

from University of Michigan Dental School, 1977-1981, and received a Doctor of Dental Surgery

degree. Dr. Kaspers furthered his education by receiving a Master of Science degree from

Northwestern University Dental School in 1983, from the orthodontic program. Dr. Kaspers has

lectured over the past twenty years on orthodontic diagnosis and treatment modalities as well

as temporomandibular disorders. He has maintained a busy orthodontic practice as well as a

Temporomandibular Disorders clinic in Northbrook, Illinois. He purchased an ICAT (cone beam

CT scan) machine in October 2007 and is currently advising Imaging Sciences International.

After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in 1981, Dr. Fay

completed a one year General Practice Residency at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach,

Florida. He then spent two years obtaining his Prosthodontics specialty certification at the

Veterans Administration Hospital in Houston, Texas, the University of Texas at Houston Dental

Branch, and the MD Anderson Hospital and Tumor Clinic. After finishing in 1984 he moved to

Maui and began private practice. Currently, he is a visiting faculty member at the Pankey

Institute and a speaker & coach with the Growth Into Greatness Dental Practice Management

Company. He is also co-Director of the Maui Postgraduate Dental Forum – our local Seattle

Study Club.
