At last, the end of the long dark days of winter are behind us and the smell of spring is truly in the air. The Winter Term has not been without its highlights. Students have been involved in numerous trips and events including the annual ski trip to Italy, the RE trip to Amsterdam, a joint A Level Art/History trip to Paris and a Year 9 MFL trip to Paris too. There has also been the excellent College production of ‘Lord of the Flies’ which was met with critical acclaim. Certainly in the sports arena, the winter months have been very rewarding. The College boast final performances in the Kent cup in both under 19 and under 17 age groups and Bromley cup finals in Year 7 and 9, as

well as Year 9 being in the district basket ball final. I wish all the teams the very best of luck in their up and coming fixtures. The end of the Winter Term and start of the Summer means the beginning of exam fever. GCSE, AS and A2 exams start very shortly in what is a very disjointed Summer Term. All Key Stages are on target to meet their predicted grades which will mean ano ther record breaking year for the College. Revision as always is the key. Please check the website for revision sessions, revision materials and tips.

The results of the parental surveys 2010/11 have now been compiled. I would like to thank the 180 parents who

took part. The main area which the College needs to develop is how students’ views are listened to, and how their say in how the College is run, is implemented. This is going to be investigated further by the ‘Student Voice’. I was extremely pleased that 88% of parents felt that Kemnal Technology College was an effective school and were proud that their son or daughter attend Kemnal Technology College, and 91% felt that teachers expected their son or daughter to work hard and do their best. At the beginning of the Janu­ ary term in 2011 the History Department arranged to take the whole of year 7 on trips to three castles in Kent: Rochester, Bodiam and Eynsford. The aim: to com­ pare the designs of the three castles and try and explain why they are all so different. The boys had a fantastic day wherever they went – both touring the castles; investi­ gating from the foundations to the turrets (with particular attention paid to the toilets…) and also visiting other histori­ cal sites. The boys who went to Bodiam got to try armour and weapons; the boys who visited Rochester experi­ enced life on an 18 th Century

prison hulk in the local mu­ seum and the boys who went to Eynsford visited a Roman villa. A fantastic two days were had by all and really added to the pupils’ project

based homework where they built and compared models of each castle.

YEAR 7 H ISTORY CASTLES TR IP

Students found this day a massive confidence build­ ing exercise in engaging in street portraiture and have

included the work produced in their Unit 1 portfolios. Mr Elias (Art)

Year 12 AS Photography were the first group from KTC to get onto the very popular ( and overbooked ) portraiture workshops run by the National Portrait Gallery in February 2011. The all –day workshop in­ cluded free entry to the Taylor Wessing portrait exhibition and a series of two guided practical work­ shops with professional photographers. Student were given a brief to take photographs in of people in a candid fashion the local vicinity using top of the range Canon digital SLR’s . The next task was to do the same thing but then to ask people for their permission. Students then printed out their five best portraits from each exercise on a pro mini printer and the profession­ als gave their feedback of their work. The NPG staffs were very impressed by the images taken and some will be used as to promote fu­ ture workshop publicity.

THE FRENCH REVOLUT I ON

Year 13 took a recent trip to the theatre to s u p p l e m e n t t h e i r understanding of the French Revolution. They were immersed in the world of political intrigue during ‘the Terror’ and the fiery debates of the political clubs in Paris. It was a great introduction to the topic and the execution of Danton at the end was a major talking point (how did the gui l lot ine work so realistically?).

Tommy was nomi­ nated by his friend Jo­ seph Nelson because of his supportive and positive attitude. Since starting in September Tommy has looked after other students in his form group, help­ ing them to settle in to secondary school. He has also become

tourist sightseeing and spending! In the afternoon we travelled to Kamp Vught, the most westerly SS Concentration Camp in Europe. It was haunting seeing the surviving barbed wire fences and being told what conditions were like for the Jews there. We left our messages of remem- brance on their Memory Wall. Definitely an experi- ence we won’t forget.

In the evening we visited the Hard Rock Café for a final meal before returning back to school. It was great to spend time with the students as they played pool, air hockey and card games! Thanks to Mr Stratford, Mrs Berry, Ms McCullagh and Miss Ander- son for helping on the trip. Miss Honey

At 5am 41 students and 5 teachers set off from col- lege, heading for Amster- dam. We arrived at our hostel after a long bus and ferry journey and started with a quick exploration of the city. On Saturday morning we visited Anne Frank’s House and saw the rooms in which she and her family hid from the Nazis. We also got to see her original diary. This was a really thought provoking experi- ence to imagine not being able to go outside for nearly 2 years. In the after- noon we visited the Na- tional Liberation Museum, where the guides told us about life in Holland during WW2 and how the Allies tried to liberate it. We saw their memorial to the thou- sands of Allied soldiers killed and the respect they show towards them. On Sunday morning we had a boat trip around Amster- dam’s canals and did some

A great season to date looking forward to the Kent cups final at the end of the month. The academy have won 8 out of there last 10 games putting them top of the Kent schools league 7th in the Kent north league and with a local Derby against Hayes in the semi final of the Bromley cup. Over all the academy have had a fantastic first year and are com­ peting for four honours. It’s not just the acad­ emy doing very well, the year 7 reached the national round 6

Kent QF and are in the Bromley cup final. The year 8 reached both the Kent and Bromley semi finals which has been there best year yet well done boys. Years 9s reached the Kent cup QF and are also in the Bromley cup final. This is their sec­ ond cup final in 3 years in this competition. The year 11 have had their best football year yet reaching two Kent QF'S losing out on pen­ alties in one. The Academy have their trials next month, looking to strengthen

On Friday 18th March Kemnal welcomed 25 professionals from a wide range of careers and sectors, all of whom gave up their afternoon to come and speak with the year 10 students about their experi­ ences. For one hour, students had the oppor­ tunity to go around the hall and engage with as many different people as possible ­ asking ques­ tions on anything from job satisfaction and pay, to the day­to­day practi­ calities of their work and what qualifications you

need. Overall I am pleased to say that the students made the most of this unique opportu­ nity and found it informa­ tive and motivating. The professionals also thor­ oughly enjoyed the day, although they seemed to be exhausted by the end of it!

ence abuse. The show started off well when the whole building was evacuated after the first explosion but as soon as we got back to our seats we got to watch an inter­ esting show, which was topped off by one of our students being picked from the audience to blow up a microwave. It

was excitement all round and after the show we got to walk around the many interactive stools the big bang fair had on offer.

The science department kicked off national sci­ ence and engineering week with a bang. A group of students from science club and the 6th form biology students were taken by myself and Miss Loveridge to the Excel centre in Lon­ don where we watched a live show of Braniac sci­

This year we wanted to do something different. After a long and rich tra­ dition of staging large scale musicals, we felt it was time for a change. Miss Garrard was keen to show off some of the great actors we have here at Kemnal and came up with an ‘all boys’ play: Lord of the Flies by William Golding. I enjoyed this play im­ mensely. The acting was powerful and the atmosphere was highly charged throughout. Well done to all the cast

As part of a unit on Indonesian music, the music department recently took two groups of year 8 students to the Royal Festi­ val Hall to play on a real ‘gamelan’. The students were intro­ duced to each of the instruments within a traditional gamelan and learned to play an authentic piece of gamelan music as a group. The trip really brought to life the unit on Indonesian mu­ sic that students are currently studying in the music classroom. Mr Hunter (Music)

The 16th March was a very exciting day for 7A2 in the maths de­ partment. They were chosen to take part in Greenwich Universi­ ties initiative to encourage people into Secondary Teach­ ing. This involved a film crew for the first half of the lesson and photo shots for the latter half. Given that the students were given a GCSE prob­

I .Kemnal has been invited to take part in a new initia­ tive ‘Enhanced Healthy Schools’. Schools who have achieved the Healthy Schools status in the bor­ ough were asked if they would like to participate in this new scheme to develop the general wellbeing of students and staff with is­ sues that are pertinent to all, especially teenagers. A range of activities have been planned for the next academic year, so watch out for further details…. We have reached the mid stage of this award now and there are a lot of things happening at Kemnal. The launch of the recipes of the month for a main meal and a packed lunch have been very successful, with stu­ dents and staff saying they have tried and enjoyed

these. This will be an ongo­ ing feature on our website. If any parents or students have any good ideas for recipes please email them to me at hdor­ ling@ktc.bromley.sch.uk. We will be running a cook­ ery workshop in March for some of our year 13 stu­ dents who are going to University in September showing them some simple recipes and advising on how to shop and eat health­ ily on a budget. Form captains have been showing their form groups slides on healthy eating and the benefits of a bal­ anced diet whilst encourag­ ing them to choose health­ ier options in the canteen some times or at least try­ ing a healthy option. There are posters in every form room advising of a

drop in service with the school nurse to discuss any issues concerning students. This is held on a Wednes­ day afternoon between 1.00pm and 1.30pm in H1 (Humanities block). Anti bullying is also being promoted by form captains and form tutors with film clips, buddying schemes, posters in every form room on how to report any inci­ dents of bullying and stu­ dents being asked their views on what would help them to report issues and their thoughts on bullying and its consequences.

All in all we are progressing well and are pleased to be able to go forward with achieving this award. Miss Dorling

most feel it has boosted their confidence about speaking in public. Two students from each ses­ sion were chosen to go through to the next round. The next round was a daunting experience; performing their speech in front of their peer group in the year 10 as­ sembly. Christopher Blaylock and Adam Wright, as reserve, were chosen to go to the Bromley Regional Final. The regional Final of Speak up speak out was an exciting event held, at Bullers wood school, with students competing from various schools around the country.

A chance for year ten students to ‘speak out’ publicly about any topic they wish! In February two sets of year ten students took part in the ‘Speak Up, Speak out’ challenge. Each group was led by a professional from the charity, who gave them some public speaking tips such as the impor­ tance of body language and the power of the dramatic pause… It was then down to the stu­ dents to devise their own two minute speech about anything they wanted. Every student who took part was able to take something useful away from the day and

There was a large audi­ ence to perform as well as important special guests as judges. The perform­ ances were thought­ provoking and varied so much in content and deliv­ ery. The judges had a hard decision to make. Christopher unfortunately did not get though to the next round but did Kemnal School proud with an en­ gaging speech entitled ‘An evil deed’. Well done to all who had the courage to ‘speak up and speak out’, it’s not an easy thing to do!

In my opinion I thought the French trip was e event full experience. I have never been to Paris. So it was new to me. I really enjoyed the Eiffel Tower and the ca­ thedral Notre Dame. I hope to go back soon with my family! Gihan

The year 9 trip to Paris was a great success. We managed to visit a lot of tourist attractions either by walking and taking the metro. We went inside the ca­ thedral Notre Dame and we saw the stained glass windows and amazing statues. It was

breathtaking. We then walked to the museum Le Louvre which artworks include the famous paint Mona Lisa. We also bought crepes and gauffres! We visited the French Stadium, where Jon­ Michael sat in the Presi­ dent seat in the stands. We visited a lot of more monuments and places... Tomas and Jon­Michael

What can I say a very long coach ride but id be lying if I said it wasn’t worth it. It was great at the beginning I could not ski at all and neither could any one else and by the end we skid down a 2000 metre mountain we went from beginner too advanced in one week .Don’t worry its not all skiing we went swimming sledging karaoke a night club and also a restaurant. Italian pizza was great. It was one of them holidays were everything was fun and your with

The annual Art depart­ ment trip to Paris was a resounding success this year and students have returned enthused about Modern Art and Paris life!! A hectic tour led them around the Popidou mu­ seum of modern art, the European Museum of Photography, the Eiffel tower, the Sacre Ceur and Montmatre square, the old City district and a range of shops and restaurants. Students had a go at navi­ gating their way around the city on foot and get­ ting to know the busy Paris underground sys­ tem. They enjoyed the Spring sunshine along the

banks of the river Seine and experienced the beauty of an early morn­ ing photography session in the famous jardin de tuileries. Each day was finished off with an authentic Parisien meal and a night time

walk along bustling Paris streets with the ever pre­ sent Eiffel tower lit up to show the way.
