I do hope you all enjoyed the half-term break. It was lovely to see the children come back refreshed and slot straight back into the swing of things this week.
Year 7 in London I had a fantastic day out with Year 7 yesterday, who, as expected, were most splendid and entertaining company through-out. We spent some time taking in Trafalgar Square before going into the National Gallery to view some of the more well-known paintings, including van Gogh’s Sunflowers, Monet’s The Water-Lily Pond and Holbein’s The Ambassadors. We then enjoyed lunch in Pizza Express before walking down Whitehall, where we saw the preparations underway around the Cenotaph for the national Remembrance Day Service which will be taking place there on Sunday. We then had a fasci-nating guided tour around the Houses of Parliament before finishing the day with a flight on the London Eye, with stunning views of the capital at sunset.
Remembrance Day Service We will be holding our own Remembrance Day Service on Monday at 11.00am in the main car park in front of the bank of poppies that are now in place. Thank you so much for the many, many comments parents have made regarding the pop-pies. They are indeed a lovely and moving tribute to all those who have been affected in wars and conflicts since the end of World War I, 100 years ago.
We will be offering the opportunity for the children and staff to take their own poppy home with them, once we take down the display in a few weeks’ time. There will be a suggested donation for this of £2 which will also go the Poppy Ap-peal, the Royal British Legion's biggest fundraising appeal. As you will know, the money will go to providing lifelong sup-port for the Armed Forces community - serving men and women, veterans and their families. Further details regarding how the children can claim their poppy will be given out in due course.
Sports Masterclasses We have recently enjoyed a number of visits from external sports coaches to lead masterclasses with our pupils. Just before half term, James Stedman, Director of Hockey at Rugby School, spent the afternoon working with our U10 girls, and Mike Bayly, Director of Rugby at Rugby School, spent the afternoon working with our U12 boys. More recently, the senior boys enjoyed having Robbie Povey with them for Games on Wednesday. Robbie, who is a former Spratton pupil, is playing for Coventry RFC as well as Canada. I am sure the children gain a huge amount from these sessions.
U10 Rugby Our U10 boys continue their very successful season so far. The As took part in a Rugby Festival at Bilton Grange on Wednesday, winning all their matches and continuing their unbeaten season. Well done, boys.
New Timings In this past week, we have been reviewing some of the changes to the structure of the prep school day we made for the start of this term. Our implementation of a daily reading time has been an unmitigated success, eliciting so many positive and grateful comments from both staff and parents. It is always reassuring to receive feedback of this kind – thank you for doing so. The ‘Reading Time’ ensures that our children read every day, as well as having a calming few moments before afternoon school begins.
Our slightly earlier start to the day of 8.30am has also worked well – thank you for changing your morning routines to adjust to the new timings. May I make a polite request, however, that those children who are often late into school and arrive in Registration late could try to be here on time as the children start the day on the back foot and can miss some important information given out in Registration; it can also be awkward for them to have to come into assembly late. Thank you for your support in this matter.
Parents’ Meetings Our prep school parent/teacher meetings start next week, with the Year 7 meeting on Thursday 15th. These meetings gives you the opportunity to talk to individual teachers about the progress your child is making and to discuss areas for development. The meeting begins at 6.00pm in the Dome with last entry for parents at 7.00pm. I look forward to seeing you there.
Events There are a number of other events taking place next week. We have our annual ‘Music in Quiet Places’ concert in St Andrew’s Church on Monday, always a lovely event, and I am sure Year 3 are looking forward to their visit to the Black Country Living Museum on Thursday.
Tours Finally, I wish all the children going on our sports tours today the very best of luck. I hope they enjoy playing in some tough fixtures, but also enjoy the whole tour experience.
Thank you

PRE-PREP
There is a wonderful saying that always comes to mind at this time of year, ‘The Au-
tumn paints in colours that Summer has never seen.’ It may well be cold and damp
outside, but with the crunch and swirl of leaves underfoot and the stunning golds, or-
anges and reds that surround us, Autumn is indeed awesome, as my half term chal-
lenge declared! I have been overwhelmed by the array of imaginative autumnal collag-
es, hanging decorations, collections and photographs that have flooded into school this
week – it has been a joy to admire the many different and creative ways in which the
children have exercised their skills. If you have a moment, I urge you to come and ad-
mire the children’s work in the Pre-Prep entrance for yourself, it is quite beautiful.
The whooshing and sparkling of fireworks lighting up the night sky this week, has led to
much discussion and some valuable learning opportunities centred around both Bon-
fire Night and Diwali. Our special thanks go to Mrs Bhangra, Arjun’s mummy, who
came in to talk to the Reception children about some of the customs which form part
of their family celebrations at this important time of the year.
I cannot quite believe how quickly Christmas feels like it is approaching! You will have
noticed this week that I sent out a letter regarding tickets for our highly anticipated Pre
-Prep Christmas Nativities. With the seating capacity of the Hunter Hall in mind, num-
bers need to be managed very carefully. May I ask that you submit your ticket re-
quests no later than Thursday 15th November please, so that Mrs Mangan and I can
begin the process of juggling numbers and allocating names to places.
Remaining on the theme of Christmas, your child brought home their beautiful printed,
glossy sample Christmas card this week. Should you wish to purchase any, orders need
to be placed online at www.thedandyarthouse.com by Friday 16th November, to guar-
antee delivery to school within the first week of December. Parents with children in
Pre-Prep and Prep, may order a mix of packs when taking advantage of the 3 for 2
offer. Full details are on the information slip included with your child’s sample card.
Finally, come rain or shine, we will be gathering outside for a special Remembrance
Day Observance on Monday. Whilst the children will be wearing their blazers, school
coats may also be needed.
