NICK COOK – OUR FALL WEEKEND DEMO ARTIST - SEPTEMER 29TH
& 30TH
Harry Ford & Gordon Sloane, our September Demo Artists
Those who attended the September Meeting got a two for one Demo! Harry led off demonstrating how to turn a sphere, by hand! No jig, no lasers, nothing but standard lathe tools. You
can access Harry’s handout on the Resource Page of the Website. Gordon then followed up with a short video featuring J. Paul Fennell and showcased the equipment he uses to power carve and pierce projects. Gordon set up an indexing wheel on the lathe and showed how it is used to develop the patterns for embellishing thin wall vessels.
COMING UP IN OCTOBER
Our October Meeting Demo will feature Brad Duckett
demonstrating Turning a Lidded Bowl.
SEPTEMBER SAFETY MESSAGE By Mike Anthony
*Make sure the wood you are using is securely held on your lathe for the task at hand. *Never leave the chuck key in your chuck. *If your lathe has both forward and reverse, make sure the chuck, faceplate etc. is secure with a locking screw. Serious injury may result from the chuck coming off the lathe when being used in reverse.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
I want to apologize to all members and guests at Tuesday evening’s meeting for the failure of our camera equipment. Jim Vogelsang is not sure what went wrong but will find out the problem and correct it for October’s meeting. Even though we had no cameras, Harry Ford’s demonstration on spherical turning was interesting and thought provoking. Reading up on spherical turning I found out that early on, billiard balls were regularly turned out of elephant ivory. Now that is not the case as I am sure it goes for croquet balls and other hard balls. Thanks Harry for a great demonstration. We also showed our first and second You-Tube videos, at a club meeting, and I think they went over really well. Watching that safety video I almost felt it could have been me, and the interview with J. Paul Fennell was enlightening. When I first started turning I just really wanted to make something nice and useful. Now, after 12 years of practice, I find myself looking at expanding my vision into the artful side of turning. Who knows, I may one day use Milk Paint on one of my turnings.
It seems that at every monthly meeting of the SMWTS we add new members. This is a good thing and hopefully reflects on the enjoyment and enthusiasm for our woodturning passion. Putting on quality demonstrations, charitable committees, monthly Newsletters, and a continuing evolving Web-site, does not happen by magic. It happens through the efforts of individuals who care about all of the above. These individuals have been at it for some time now and there is a need to get some new blood to take over some of these tasks. Our Board of Directors meeting in October will be discussing and developing a new slate of five candidates for election to the 2019-2020 Board of Directors (these are two-year terms). From this the Board of Directors will elect new club officers at the January 2019 Board of Directors meeting. Any member who would like to be considered as a member of the Board of Directors should contact me and plan to attend the October Board meeting (to be announced to all members through a future emailing). Members who would like to help with the newsletter, web-site, or other committees should also contact me. Remember, “the more effort you put into something the better the product is in the end.”
As of right now we have eleven people attending the Fall Woodworking Demo with Nick Cook on Saturday, Sept. 29, and seven people signed up for the Hands-on-workshop on Sunday. Missing out on either of these events is an opportunity that may not come around again and probably not at this price. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to encourage your attendance to either or both events.
Thanks and Keep Turning
Gordon Sloane

Tom’s Video of the Month Link. Member Tom
Knight has been researching the “how-t0” videos available on You Tube and through the AAW Website. He thought our members would like to see some of them. This is one of the great benefits of AAW Membership and saves time searching through You Tube. Tom will select a different video each month in hopes that our Chapter members will take advantage of the videos that are available. This one is on “Inlaying a spider web for Halloween”……

Our commitment to provide Treasure Boxes for the sick kids at East Tennessee Children’s Hospital is ongoing.
Unfortunately, the number of sick
children who benefit from the BOC
program doesn’t diminish.. Our
ETCH volunteer liaison, Drue
Hogland, will continue to present our
Treasure Boxes as they are needed
to the kids at ETCH.
Our Chapter provides BOC Beads to
our members at no cost for this
worthwhile project. You can pick up
beads from Drue at any of our

You are urged, as well, to contact
Drue for the opportunity to
accompany him at the Hospital as he
distributes Treasure Boxes to the kids

WHAT’S NEW AT THE RANCH?
September has proven to be a “hot” one! The Workshop times have changed with the students back in “regular” school hours. We now have one workshop in the morning and another in the afternoon. We’re looking forward to the coming of cooler weather because the afternoon session has been rather toasty. Beginning students turned goblets in this month’s workshop. Intermediate students are turning “ball catch toys”. This month, we delivered the Jet Cyclone Dust Collection System and the Jet Air Filtration unit that the Chapter donated to the Ranch. The Dust Collection System was quite heavy so we ended up unpacking it on the truck to get it into the building. We’ll be assembling the unit in preparation for installation, as soon as the temperatures decline.
We are still in need of a drill press for the shop. If you would like to donate one, please contact Bob Law ([email protected])!
