The hotel near the Zoo got some gold fish ponds that we could enjoy through the windowsof the entrance hall - it was very hot outside usually over 40deg Celsius - a heat wave - duringour stay The ponds contained some stones of great beauty as the one shown here I was

happily surprised already during an earlier visit to China that these people adore stones asthe Japanese also do Europeans are not so good at that and we have a lot to learn there it

makes life more beautiful when you also can appreciate stones and their highly intrinsicqualities and values



Next to the stones in the hall of the hotel a reception desk for the shell show was perfectlyorganized participants got a bag a pins a brochure and an identity tag

The initiators of this Shanghai Shell Show are to be congratulated and thanked JingHe Steven Ko Xiaojun-Wan Jiang Wang Bin Tang Fei Wu Hao Yang and Conchology Incspecial thanks go also to XiaoJun Wan ShuFeng Wang YingZhen Gu Royston Koh Bin LiFengGe Hao FanXiao Bei Qian Fan Xiao and Bin Tang

Different sponsors contributed with big and small amounts Qingdao Shell MuseumJing He Steven Ko XiaoJun Wan Jiang Wang Bin Tang Fei Wu Hao Yang andConchology Inc all did as such

For the Snail Display all dry specimens in exhibition were contributed by He JingHuangShun Xi ShuFeng Wang ZhengPing Liu and PengFei Ning donated some livelandsnails for display

Mr Jinlong Zhu provided prizes for the shell display

I want to draw the attention to the excellent brochure produced this 20-pagebrochure in a practical format of 10 cm by 20 cm The 10 first pages are in Chinese the 10next pages in English One finds there the organizing teams with their tasks the sponsorsthe details for the entry pass the daily program schedule hour by hour including allactivities a ground plan of the events rooms names of all participants to the bourse withtheir emails details on the recommended hotel etchellip The last page shows 9 photographs ofinteresting places to see and visit in Shanghai

Such a brochure is an example to follow in shellshows worldwide



The Shanghai Shell Show Pins of 2017 Many shell collectors have also a collection of shellpins This is aesthetically one of the better ones The shell shown is I think the dorsal side

of a reversed Grandinenia mirifica (Chen amp Gao 1982) one of Chinas most spectacularClausiliids

Great decoration outside the rooms the visitors of the zoo could not miss the events whichwas of course an extra

Many visitors from the start on Remarkable was the average age most were enthusiasticyoung people in strong contrast with the shell shows in the west where the majority of the

visitors is by now over sixty Hope giving was the presence of dozens of very youngcollectors sponsored and helped by the parents who often took the plane from other cities

to assist the event

The Philippines were well present and here your author on the right with long time friendVictor Dan from Manila Victor is one of the most enthusiastic collector and has a large

ensemble of rare Philippine shells which he gathered together in more than half a century ofactive collecting Here he shows me a photo of what I think is the back valve of the by now

very rare Spondylus erectospinosus



A young Chinese collector came with a nice set of shells he offered for exchange which wegladly accepted Checking all took some time even we were 4 to do so back left Mona in

the center Sheila

Great activities around the table of He Jing and Grace their colorful land snails got muchattention



And this is a magnificent hope-giving photo look at the enthusiasm of the girl with her shellsand the intensity of the attention of the boy for the shells in his hand Definitely shell study

and collecting has a bright future in China

Much enthusiasm and a splendid public for a small talk of your author on the Biodiversity inthe Philippines I am standing in the back of the room on the left Sheila keeps a small

electric fan on my face and the face of Royston Koh

Royston is an avid shell and sea urchin collector from Singapore who was so kind totranslate my English sentence after sentence in Chinese He is here particularly thanked for

the collaboration Here Royston and Sheila

Most of us were in the same hotel brand new and more than reasonable in price We allenjoyed a common supper at the end of the second day The perfect occasion to socialize
