Dear Brothers and Sisters, Members and
Friends of the Hill United Presbyterian
Church:
Maybe you have heard the phrase “think globally,
act locally!”.
In the Christian faith, there is the phrase, “the
earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof, the world
and those who dwell therein.”.
So, we live on this planet but also must live in a
certain locale.
The Church of Jesus Christ is worldwide, yet also,
local. We are part of a local and international
missionary movement to help transform lives for Jesus
Christ and the Kingdom of God.
Once upon a time, Barry and Shelly Dawson were
here with us locally at Hill Church; yet now they are
our Denomination’s Liaisons in Southeast Asia, based
in Thailand.
On Wednesday, September 9th, beginning with a
light lunch in our Fellowship Hall at 12:15 p.m.
followed by a presentation at 1:00 p.m., Barry and
Shelly Dawson will be with us.
You are invited to be with us for lunch and/or the
presentation.
If you would come for lunch, please call the
Church Office by September 4th to make a
reservation.
It will be wonderful to have you with us and
wonderful to be with the Dawsons.
Please keep them in your prayers.
Grace to you and Peace from
God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ,
Pastor Clark
Rev. Clark T. Sawyer
The word “WORSHIP” comes from the
Old English word, “WORTH-SHIP”.
Certainly, God in Jesus Christ is “worthy” of
our praise and it is “worth” our while to
worship God!
It is worth your time and mine to take time
to meet God in WORSHIP. Please
invite and bring relatives, friends, and
neighbors!
Thank you very much!

Update from the Forward in Faith Task Force
The Forward in Faith Task Force was commissioned by the Session to develop suggestions for a long term plan
for Hill Church’s ministries and programs. Its work is a continuation of assessment and planning efforts that
started with the 2002 Ministry Audit and continued with the 2008 Special Committee.
The Forward in Faith Task Force wishes to thank the members of the congregation who completed and returned
the Congregational Survey. Forty-three pages of comments have been collected from the survey and are being
carefully reviewed by the Task Force. Once this review has been completed, the Task Force will schedule some
focus group meetings on topics of interest to the congregation.
You may also share your opinions or concerns personally with any of the Forward in Faith Task Force members.
Those members include: Laraine McCrea, Pat Brennen, Lauren McElhaney, Barb Graham, Peg Dumbaugh, Patti
Donaldson, Cathy Zarnick, Anne Miller, the Rev. Clark Sawyer and Louise Evans.
If you have a question or concern about the work of the Hill Church Forward in Faith Task Force, please speak
with a Task Force member or with a member of the Session.

GHANA MISSION TASK FORCE REPORT
MISSION CO-WORKER ARRIVES IN MARS
On July 21st, the Task Force travelled to the Old Union Church of Mars to hear Mission co-worker Joshua Heikkila
speak of his work in West Africa. He talked of the joys of the people as well as their struggles. Josh showed many
pictures of life in the area. He took these as he traveled around West Africa. One picture showed a small
automobile being hauled on the back of a three-wheeled motorcycle, another of eight persons riding on a
motorcycle (these were not the large cycles we are accustomed to seeing), and several pictures showing small
business structures with ‘Godly’ names such as Heavenly Hair Salon, or Jesus Loves Cloth Emporium, or My Savior
Vegetables.
Josh delivered a long anticipated photo album from the Bubiashie Scholarship Committee. The album contains 27
photos of students receiving their scholarship awards. These attractive girls are adorned in beautiful dresses of many
colors and designs. We hope to show this album to you.
Josh also reiterated the dire situation of PCUSA mission workers as funding is rapidly decreasing for this important
work throughout the world.
CONTRIBUTIONS CAN STILL BE MADE
In a few days we will be sending scholarship money to the Bubiashie Committee for distribution. Please make a
point to contribute this week so that we will have a meaningful amount to send. Recall that 46 students were
helped this past school year. Thank you for your great love for education for these young, Christian women.
PRAYER CONCERNS CONTINUE
Please continue to keep the Bubiashie District churches, Bernard Daddy, chairperson of the Bubiashie Scholarship
Committee, as well as the students, and Joshua Heikkila, the West Africa Liaison for the PC (USA), in your prayers.
Every year Hill Church is asked to support the work of the Beaver-Butler Presbytery, the Synod of the
Trinity and the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church USA. This support is made through a
per-capita assessment of church members. This assessment has been used for over 150 years to fund
the essential work of the Presbyterian Church.
As we have done in past years, we are inviting members to the Hill Church family of faith to contribute to the support of
the shared work of the Presbyterian Church USA. The per-capita assessment for 2015 is $39.93 per member which
includes all those who have been baptized and have made their profession of faith. For example, a single member would
contribute $39.93, a couple who are both members would contribute $79.86, a couple with one confirmed child would
contribute $119.79 and so on.
For your convenience in making this offering, a special blue envelope has been included in your regular box of
envelopes, appearing between the January 25th and the February 1st envelopes. Or you may mark the memo line of your
check “per-capita” and this offering will be properly credited to your giving statement.
As of 8/24/15 we have collected $4,232.92. Thank you for your continued generosity and support.

Connie has served for over ten years as the Spiritual Coordinator/Chaplain for Hospice of the Visiting Nurses Association. For Your Prayerful Consideration: The Financial Stability of Hill Church
“We are called to reach into the community to help each person:
to experience God’s grace through Jesus Christ,
to develop healthy relationships,
and grow spiritually in friendship with God.”
(Hill Church Mission Statement—adopted by Session)
What do YOU see when you take the time to experience what’s happening “Up On the Hill”? Is there evidence we are being true to our mission statement? Are we turning mere words into action, transforming lives as we honor God? The goal of the ministries and programs of Hill Church is to provide us with varying opportunities for worship, study, mission, outreach, and fellowship. Not every program is for everyone. However, together, these ministries serve to strengthen all of us in our faith. From the lifelong member to the newcomer seeking a church home, Hill Church is a place where we grow closer in our relationships with God and one another. As a member of the Stewardship and Mission Support Committee I believe Hill Church is worthy of our continued support of its mission, ministries and programs. Our church is fiscally sound and financially stable. Here are some interesting facts to consider as you contemplate how you can support the work of our church in the coming months. Through the grace of God, working through the lives and the generosity of current and former members of Hill Church spanning many generations:
We currently have restricted and unrestricted investment reserves totaling $533,221 to help us
meet our ministry goals.
We currently have NO DEBT, allowing all offerings to be applied to the ministries of the church.
We have completed a successful capital campaign, raising $186,612 for needed repairs and
upgrades to our church building and facilities. Having a church that is clean, safe and in good
repair provides all of us a place where we can give our lives to God through worship, prayer,
study and service.
This summer we have raised $4,770 (and still growing) for repairs to our beautiful stained glass
windows. Only God will ever know how many members and guests to our church have been
encouraged and strengthened in their faith by viewing the image of our Lord praying in the
garden of Gethsemane.
We have received $469,564 in bequests and special gifts during the past five years.
As with thousands of main line churches across the country, Hill Church has experienced declining
enrollment and attendance which, has resulted in the recent years’ decrease in general fund income. The
stewardship and mission support committee, along with the Session, continue to seek solutions to this
current budget problem. However, despite these challenges, God is with us here at Hill Church, guiding
and continually providing abundant blessings. The mission of Hill Church is real; please prayerfully
consider how you can support it.
Respectfully, Tim Moses, Stewardship and Mission Support
ATTENTION: All over 18 who love and work with children
As you may know, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has changed its
requirements for who needs to obtain background checks and clearances when
working with children under 18. In the past, only paid staff and teachers working
with children needed checks and clearances. But now anyone - paid or volunteer
- who has direct teaching or caring contact with children under 18 MUST receive
the appropriate checks and clearances.
What does this mean for you? If you are involved in a ministry of teaching, care
for, or have adult responsibilities for children under 18, you must get the
following checks and clearances.
If you are over 18 and serve in a ministry as a volunteer that has any direct
contact with children, you must obtain:
1. The PA State Criminal History Report
2. The PA Child Abuse History
3. Provide Hill Church either a notarized affidavit stating that you
have lived in Pennsylvania for the last ten years or an FBI Criminal
History Report if you have lived in the PA for less than 10 years.
There is no cost for the clearances except for a notary fee for the affidavit or a fee
for the FBI Clearance.
Information packets and forms can be obtained from the church office or use the
forms attached to the August newsletter.
It is essential that anyone who needs to complete the clearance forms do so
immediately. There is bound to be a backlog at the state level to get approvals.
Please return all completed forms to the church office for mailing.
If you have not done your clearances yet, please turn them in as soon as
possible! If you already have clearances from a place of employment, please
bring a copy to the church for our files.
