Increasing Your Job Prospects Whilst Studying

Since this newsletter goes out to a lot of people, I’ve decided that it’s best to do a section on students. Since I have just come out of full time education myself, I know that it can be hard to find a job initially, because everywhere seems to want experience. With this in mind, every student should find themselves either a part time job or a placement, preferably in the job sector that they want to work in, however any experience will work. This shows employers that you are willing to work hard and that they can place you in a job setting and you are comfortable with it. To do this, colleges and universities always have a job advice center,

and they will help you find a part time job or a placement that suits you.

Of course there is some admin work, data capture and liaising with clients that you expect from an agency-side sales role, but don't let that put you off – the majority of

How to Explain Gaps in Your CV

When writing a CV, you always want to tailor it to the job that you’re applying for. This might mean that there are gaps in your CV anyway, which is to be expected. However if you have gaps that can’t be explained because of this, then it is important that you are always honest. You don’t have to explain in every detail; however it is important to briefly say the reason somewhere in your CV. Example: “Due to unfortunate circumstances, I had to take a career break to focus on family issues .” You don’t have to explain what this issue was, who it was about or why it was the length of time it was, and personal questions like that shouldn’t be asked at the interview stage or by phone, or even when they’ve hired you, so don’t panic, you can keep the issue private. Never lie. If they decide to hire you and then they find out that you have lied, you could end up with issues, with the possibility of being fired.

How to Write About Hobbies on a CV

When it comes to writing hobbies and interests, make sure you know of a few that would draw in a recruiter. Employers generally don’t like seeing “sleeping, eating and socializing.” This is too general. Employers want to see hobbies and interest that relate to the role and that reflects who you are as a person. Stating any volunteering roles and extra courses you are doing will work.

They don’t have to be directly related to the job you are applying for however, as long as what you write down shows you are committed to developing your skills and experience, anything from reading and blogging to “keen on photography” should do. The interesting thing about this part of the CV is that it doesn’t have to actually be included, and some employers might disregard them as simply unprofessional. So bear that in mind, as it really is up to you to include it.

Struggling to Find Work?

Obviously the first call you make is to us. But here are a few tips that will help you land that all important next interview.

Take up a course. Again call us first, we provide a variety of courses that will help you in your career, like health and safety, first aid, driver training and CPC courses. However you could search for relevant courses that you can take locally, York is brilliant for courses. There’s York College, Pitman Training, York St John University, York University, YH Training, English Language Centre, and many more.

Volunteer. Look for opportunities in your area and get on the phone! The best part about volunteering is that charities can be really flexible with hours, so it doesn’t matter how much or how little time you spend there, as long as you help out. Placing this on your CV with boost it dramatically.

Always be optimistic when writing your CV, negative and dismissive comments can make you unemployable. For example if there is a gap on your CV, don’t use the phrase “I couldn’t find a job.” This really puts recruiters off. Use phrases that emphasizes that you were actively looking, and in the meantime you took up hobbies that would widen your experience.

Job Interviews When you’ve eventually landed that interview, it’s always easy to be nervous, stumble on your words and forget how to answer the simplest of questions, or how to walk without falling up stairs. Don’t panic, everyone has done this, and everyone made it through without the Earth shattering. So how do you recover when you’ve made a mistake like that? Easy answer; you carry on. If your mind goes blank in the middle of an interview, or if you stumble and feel like an idiot. Breathe. Everyone makes

Page 4: Newsletter September 2015 For Candidates

mistakes, even your interviewers. They’re probably nervous too. Don’t instantly dismiss yourself from the job when something like this happens, just take a minute to recover, and start again with the same enthusiasm you had when you first walked in. Always ask questions when given the chance, this shows your potential employer that you are enthusiastic about the job and want to be the best employee you can be. Examples of good questions to ask:

What will my working week entail? Are there any training opportunities? Do you think I need more training? What do you expect from your employees

regarding dress code and working hours? What types of clients do you tailor for?

And examples of bad questions:

What’s the pay like? When do I normally leave for the day? When do I get a pay rise? What company is this again?

You get the idea.

Those Frightening First Few Days

The first few days of any new job are always

stressful. You don’t know what the job is actually

like, what the people are like or if you’ll fit in.

However, even though these are all unavoidable

thoughts, there are ways that you can manage

those first few days, make a good impression and

settle in quickly.

Research the Company. This is

effectively what you should have done

before the interview, but it never harms to

know more! Look into your job role too, just

to have it fresh in your mind that morning.

Be positive. Always accept workloads,

express your enthusiasm for the job, and

help out colleagues if you are able to help

with the job they are struggling with. This

always helps boost your acceptance with

people, especially managers.

Dress professionally and appropriately

for the job in hand. If you have to wear a

uniform that has been given to you, wear it

with pride! Clean it and iron it the day

before, and make sure you always go to

work in a clean set, this makes the best

impression especially is you are customer

service based.

Be organized. Always show up on time,

leave either on time or a little later,

prioritize workloads and make sure you

know what needs to be done.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Trust me

managers want you to do this, because it

shows that you are willing to learn, and it

doesn’t threaten the professionalism of

their company.

Learn names!
