Fall Pictures are Tuesday, September 30thDuring Your Social Studies ClassAre You Ready? A reminder that Fall Picturesare Tuesday, September 30th. Are you ready? Have youpicked out your outfit? What about your accessories? Hereare some tips:

OUTFITPlan your outfit the night before picture day! A clean and pressed outfit will create abeautiful portrait. Ironing the collar makes all the difference in close-up portraits!Spring Portraits are generally full-body so check your outfit from head to toe. Choosecolors that compliment your eye color and skin tone. White does not photograph well;solid colors and small patterns are generally best. Avoid spaghetti straps and off theshoulder tops, t-shirts with pop culture images, logos, superheroes and words.

HAIRWash your hair the night before so it will be clean and shiny. Practice new hairstylesand schedule all haircuts at least a week before picture day to avoid unexpectedHairy situations.

IMS CELEBRATES RED RIBBON WEEKIrmo Middle School invites the community to take a visible stand against drugs by celebrating Red Rib-

bon Week from October 22-31.Red Ribbon Week raises awareness of drug use and the problems related to drugs facing our community, and encourages parents, educators, business owners, and other community organizations to promote drug-free lifestyles. This years celebration will kick off on October 22.Red Ribbon Week encourages our entire community to adopt healthy, drug-free lifestyles, said JamesFanning IMS guidance counselor. The campaign brings together parents, schools, and businesses as welook for innovative ways to keep kids and communities drug free. The red ribbon symbolizes a continuing commitment to reducing the demand for illicit drugs in our com-

munities. In 1985, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Special Agent Enrique S. "Kiki" Camarenawas killed by drug traffickers. Shortly after Camarena's death, citizens from his hometown of Calexico,California, began wearing red ribbons to remember him and commemorate his sacrifice. Congress estab-lished Red Ribbon Week in 1988.Red Ribbon Week gives us the opportunity to be vocal and visible in our efforts to achieve a drug-free

community, said James Fanning. Research shows that children are less likely to use alcohol and otherdrugs when parents and other role models are clear and consistent in their opposition to substance use andabuse.Visit www.getsmartaboutdrugs.com for more information about Red Ribbon Week or contact James Fan-

    ning IMS guidance counselor 476-3671.

Welcome to the IMS Career Corner!Allison Redick, Career Specialist

Welcome to the Irmo Middle School Career Corner! My name is Allison Redick, the Career Specialistat Irmo Middle School. In my role as Career Specialist, I will be assisting all IMS students in careerawareness and exploration.Who am I? Where am I Going? How do I get There? We hope with parents, teachers andcounselors, we will help students begin to explore these questions and start setting goals and looking attheir future career options. By starting this process early, students will be able to discover their inter-ests and hopefully be lucky enough to find careers they will enjoy! Your career is all the education, training, and jobs you have during your entire life. As a middle school student, they will need to plan forhigh school and their career after high school. We want students to know it is okay to change theirsminds as they learn more about themselves, school, and work. In fact, surveys says, that their generationmight have 8-15 careers in their lifetime. While at IMS, students will have many opportunities to startexploring through self assessments, speakers, field trips, Career Day, Job Shadowing, activi-ties and lessons during the year. A day trip field permission form is on page 8 of this newsletter.8th Graders to Tour the D5 Career for Advanced Technical StudiesDuring the month of October, all 8th graders are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity tovisit the Career for Advanced Technical Studies in our District. IMS Career Corner contdAllison Redick, Career Specialist

Tips for Parents helping your child to chose a Career path:1) Start young. Develop career awareness by discussing career opportunities when reading books

and newspapers, watching television and observing worksites.2) Support you childs efforts to assess his or her own interests, aptitudes, values and work styles.3) Share your job experiences. A child delights in hearing about his or her parents jobs.4) Encourage participation in job shadowing and internship opportunities.5) Help your child understand the value and importance of his or her academic courses for success in a

future career.6) Advise your child that there is more than one education pathway to a good job. More than 50%

of the fastest growing jobs require an associates degree. There are a variety of routes to success: onthe job training, technical college, four year college, apprenticeships or the military.

Job Shadowing starts October 24, 2014 thru April 24, 2015.Job Shadowing is a great time for your student to explore the world of work.Job Shadowing gives students an opportunity to see that the skills they learn in school are related to theskills they will need in the workplace. Job Shadowing is considered a short-term experience to intro-duce a student to a particular job by a one-on-one pairing of a student with an employee in a work envi-ronment. The student shadows the worker up to one day to better understand the requirements of aparticular career. All students are encouraged to participate in this activity.

Important Information about Job Shadowing:Students and their parents/guardians will make arrangements for the student to shadow a parent/guardian, friend, relative or another person in a career of interest at the work site to include Transpor-tation. This Job Shadowing opportunity is offered in lieu of Take-Your-Daughter/Son To-Work Day andGroundhog Shadowing Day. Students are only eligible to have ONE day per school year for this activity.Job Shadowing can be completed in a couple of hours, an entire day, weekends and/or holidays. Stu-dents provide their own lunch during shadowing, if applicable Students should demonstrate punctuality, honesty, good grooming habits, appropriate dress and willingness to learn. Students serve as an ob-server, not a worker. Students are not permitted to shadow teachers at Irmo Middle School or Cross-roads Middle School. Any school work missed as a result of being absent for shadowing is the responsi-bility of the student. If interested, or if you need assistance for a particular career to job shadow, please have your studentcontact Allison Redick, Career Specialist, 476-3668 or [email protected]. to pick up a packet or goto our IMS Website under the Guidance Department/Career Specialist to print a packet.
