Pastor’s pen
Once upon a time there was a group of Christians
who gathered to worship God every Lord’s Day. In their
worship services they read the scripture, digested a sermon,
celebrated the sacraments, and sang together. But, oddly enough,
they had no hymnbooks! None at all!
Instead, they sang exclusively from a “Psalter,” that is, the
Book of Psalms set to meter. These strange, psalm-singing Chris-
tians typically referred to themselves as “Presbyterians.” But don’t
think it too eccentric that they sang chapters from the Book of
Psalms! Each chapter in the Book of Psalms is an individual
“psalm,” that is, a song written for use in worship and devotion.
While most Presbyterians nowadays sing hymns as well as
psalms, the Book of Psalms is still our original song-book, the foun-
tainhead of Christian prayer and praise. You’ll find that very many
of our “hymns” are actually paraphrased psalms. For instance did
you know that “Joy to the World,” “A Mighty Fortress,” and “O
God, Our Help in Ages Past” are psalms re-ordered and set to a sing-
able meter?
One of the remarkable things about the 150 song-prayers that
we find in the “Book of Psalms” is that they cover the whole range
of human life. They hold nothing back! The entire human condition
– from joy to depression, from rage to thanksgiving, from sickness
to wonder – is brought before God in prayerful song. Athanasius (an
early church leader and theologian) says, “It is my view that in the
words of this book the whole human life…is comprehended and
contained. Nothing to be found in human life is omitted.”
Over the next few weeks we’ll delve into these songs for all
seasons, finding the real help for our real lives that the psalms offer
us.

Member Highlights Gary & Roxy Gogolin
Gary was born in Huron to Mike and Mary Ann Gogolin. He has one sister, Gayle, who lives in Gettysburg and two brothers; Greg (Laura) of Rosemount, MN and Gene (Susan) of Middleburg, Fl. Gary attended Huron schools and graduated from HHS in 1973. Upon Graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He was discharged in 1977 and returned to Huron. Roxy was born in Wessington Springs to Jim and Ada Pownell and is a lifelong mem-ber of First Presbyterian. She has one
brother, Randy (Jan) of Spokane, WA. Roxy graduated from Huron High School in 1978. During and after high school she was employed at Trade-home Shoes, where she and Gary met and began dating. They married at First Presbyterian on Jan. 20, 1979. Gary returned to active duty with the Naval Reserve in 1980 and they spent the next 14 years at various locations in Iowa and Minnesota until he retired in 1994 and they returned to Huron. Gary is employed by the City of Huron as a water/wastewater treatment op-erator and Roxy is an administrative assistant with the Beadle County Wel-fare and Veterans Service offices. The couple has two children. Son, Geoff is married and lives in Cavour. He works as a mechanic for the Beadle County highway department and operates a small engine repair business. His wife, Lisa, is an accountant at LSI. They have two sons, Judson (3 ½ years) and Brantley (9 months). Gary and Roxy's daughter, Amanda, lives in Sheridan, WY where she is em-ployed as a veterinary technician at a small animal hospital. Both Geoff and Amanda were avid hockey players when they were in school, so much of the family's life revolved around the sport. Gary coached for several years and Roxy served as team coordinator as well as many other volunteer duties. They were also active in First Presbyterian's LOGOS Program and received the 1997 Friends of Youth Award. Most recently Roxy began service as a Deacon in January 2014. Gary enjoys playing golf in the summer and Roxy likes to do crafts. Camping with friends and relatives is also a favorite pastime, as well as spending as much time as possible with their kids and grandsons.
