It is amazing how quickly this year is flying by! I spent a few days in Nelson with our daughters and their families. There is nothing more special than grandchildren! We enjoyed a lovely afternoon at https://natureland.nz/ at Tahunanui Beach, had lots of cuddles and played lots of games. Bliss! During the October break a number of teachers attended maths and literacy conferences. One clear message that came through from the literacy conference was the importance of reading to children every day. At school we have “read and eat” each morning and teachers often look for other times during the day to read to, and with, the children. We encourage you to take time daily to read to your children - no matter how old they are. Research has shown that reading to children helps them to become better readers, it supports their oral language development, their thinking and reasoning. It is also a wonderful way for you to bond as a family and helps children (and adults) to relax and unwind. Our website has been updated so it is looking great! However there are a few teething problems. There are a couple of pages we can’t edit and we are having problems accessing our website when searching for it online. Hopefully these can be fixed up soon. The building work has been completed and the painting is part way there. The new weatherboard has been painted and the painters will be back in a week or so to continue painting the rest of the school. The office block looks very smart! Hopefully we will see lots of you on Lamb Day and you can check out the progress! The PFK have Lamb Day (Tuesday 30 October) organisation in hand, and they are doing a fabulous job! The craft day, with a focus on sustainable creations, will take place the day before lamb Day (Monday 29 October). You would have received a notice about this last term. Feel free to contact us if you have misplaced yours or if you have any questions. This Thursday 18th October is the nationwide Shake Out Day. Yesterday the eldest child in each family was given a booklet for you to keep at home and work through the challenges that help you prepare for an earthquake or other emergency. Once you have completed all the challenges please cut off the tick box section and return to school for your child to receive a Shakeout prize. We encourage you to fill in your family’s emergency plan sheet and pin it up at home. http://www.whatstheplanstan.govt.nz/ This term I will be running a Master Chef challenge for Years 6-8. Later this week a notice will go home with any children who are interested in participating. Master Chef will run for about 5 weeks, with between one and two challenges a week held over lunchtime and some class time. Children will need permission from parents to participate and there will be a commitment of providing ingredients and some equipment for each challenge. If we have more children entering than we have room for then we will give preference to Year 8’s and ballot Years 6 and 7. Nga mihi nui Sarah McCord Principal

Kia ora koutou,

Welcome back to school for the final term of 2018.

We encourage you to fill in your family’s emergency plan sheet and pin it up at home. http://www.whatstheplanstan.govt.nz/

This term I will be running a Master Chef challenge for Years 6-8. Later this week a notice will go home with any children who are interested in participating. Master Chef will run for about 5 weeks, with between one and two challenges a week held over lunchtime and some class time. Children will need permission from parents to participate and there will be a commitment of providing ingredients and some equipment for each challenge.
