An interesting selection of horses ran – From the St. James stables we had ‘Roly (Fisset) and ‘Ron’ (Anderson). From Charleswood Stables we had ‘Rick’ (Bennett), and ‘Mel’ (Tillis). From Hudson, Ontario Stables we had ‘Roger’ (Oakley) and from our stables we had ‘Brian’ (Wilson). These representatives are all past Manitoba/Northwestern Ontario Provincial Commanders. Betting was very brisk – kept the betting window hopping. The top horses of the evening were ‘Rick’, ‘Roger’ and ‘Ron’ placing in 2 of the 3 races. ‘Roly’ and ‘Brian’ were challenging each other on and off the track. (Some things don’t change!) It was a fun evening for our command golfers – we received a lot of accolades Our regular horse races were held on Sunday August 27 th . Although the crowd was small, the betting and cheering was great. This was our country celebrity race - and what a lineup it was! We had ‘Loretta’ (Lynn), ‘Dolly’ (Parton), ‘Allen’ (Jackson), ‘Shania’ (Twain), ‘Johnny’ (Cash) and ‘Merle’ (Haggart). It was definitely a great day for ‘Dolly’ and ‘Allan’ They only missed placing in 1 of the 6 races. ‘Dolly’ however won the best payout - $5.75 – a record for our track! In between races fans enjoyed the delicious hamburgers and smokies and the added challenge of ‘how many wasps can you catch!!!’ Our next race will be September 24 th Hope to see you then. Over 60 President’s Report I know time flies, but this summer in particular, seems to have come and gone in the blink of an eye! Our August meeting was well attended with about 100 or so members and guests. We enjoyed lunch and music, and we also had our “Over 60 Summer Games”. There were five outdoor games, as well as a crib tournament inside. Good fun and socializing for all who took part! Thanks to the volunteers who worked the games. We’re always in need of volunteer to sell Bottle Draw tickets on Friday night, and 50/50 tickets on Saturday afternoon and Monday night Bingos. Please contact me at 204-482-8990 if you are able to help out. September meeting is the start of our election process, for the up-coming year 2018. Nominations will be accepted in September and October, with elections of new officers at our November meeting. Please consider taking one of these rewarding positions!

I would like to thank the committee who worked on updating our by-laws, namely Chuck Plamondon, Dexter Harvey, Ruth Stewart and in particular, Dennis Stewart who chaired the committee and oversaw all the changes that were made. Our next Executive meeting is Sept. 14 at 1:00 and the next General Meeting is Sept. 21 at 12:00. Legion week is Sept. 17 – 23, 2017 Respectfully submitted, Lynne Kowal

Ladies Auxillary

The calendar has flipped and suddenly fall is in the air. Is it my imagination or do the summer months go by faster than the winter months. September is a busy month for both the Branch and the Auxiliary. September 9th will the floor curling event. Lac du Bonnet Auxiliary will be hosting this event. Good luck to our team of ladies. September 22 is Veterans and spouse dinner. As usual prepping will be done in the morning, beginning at 10:00, with serving starting at 5.30. Volunteers needed for both times. Please call Kim if you can help. We will be having a Mug Spud fundraiser on October 22 Tickets for this event were distributed at our June meeting. Hopefully everyone has sold all their tickets and can call Kim or Susan for more. As usual we will be doing a silent auction. One of our prizes will be a food hamper so if anyone would like to donate please bring your donation to our September meeting. Hopefully everyone had a great summer and is

looking forward to getting back into the swing of volunteering again. Respectfully submitted, Debbie Rose First Vice/ Publicity Janie Smith and Andy Anderson who had just been

presented with his 'official' bartender's apron from

Liz Flett.
