Calendar What’s On
Principal’s Message Welcome Back The start of Term 4 has been very busy and we have welcomed new students and families to the Riverstone Public School community. We are looking forward to experiencing this continuing growth over the coming months. If you know anyone that is yet to enrol into Kindergarten for next year please encourage them to do so quickly so they can be included in our numbers and planning for 2016. Before and After School Care We are very pleased to announce that we will be able to offer Before and After School Care here at Riverstone starting next year. This will be a fabulous addition to our school community as we support our working parents and parents looking for additional activities before and after school times. The service will be provided by Wesley Out of School Hours Care. A flyer is attached to make enquiries and provide further information. I have attached some information from the Wesley website regarding Out of School Hours care. A huge thanks to the Wesley staff and to the P&C who have supported this initiative for a number of years before we finally have had this approved.
Wesley Out of Hours School Care offers before and after school care for primary school aged children in the Riverstone area. The program will operate out of the Riverstone Public School Hall.
There are a range of activities on offer that reflect the value of play and social interactions for children. All children’s needs are considered when planning, programming and implementing the diverse and developmentally-appropriate experiences at Wesley Out of School Hours Care.
Aims
Wesley Mission is committed to providing high quality care for children. To achieve this, Wesley Out of School Hours Care aims to create an environment that:
* is warm and welcoming * respects and enhances children’s development through appropriate programming * encourages children to be caring and creative * is well organised with clear procedures and job descriptions * is well respected by parents, teachers and others in the community.

L3 This year Mrs Azzopardi and Miss Smigliani have been implementing L3 in the KA and 1S classrooms. So what is L3? L3 (Language, Learning and Literacy) is a research-based, cost effective Kindergarten classroom intervention, targeting text reading and writing. The program was designed to complement the daily Literacy program for students creating a rich Literacy background to their first year of school. Students receive explicit instruction in reading and writing strategies in small groups of three to four selected students, who then rotate to independent individual or group tasks. The results of the program have been very positive and we will be looking to expand the program through the rest of Stage 1 in 2016. Important Dates Please also find attached to this edition of the newsletter a calendar of important dates. Leading up to the end of term there are a number of items worth putting into the calendar in advance. Emma Thompson

Kindergarten There has been so much excitement and fantastic learning happening in Kindergarten so far
this year. We all had an enjoyable time at the farm and there were many rich learning
experiences that we had. Children were able to put the knowledge they’d learnt in class into
context by visiting a real working farm.
Our gymnastics lessons have been a big hit and the children have developed many new skills.
The gymnastics instructors commented on the improvements they observed in the children
over the term.
Our L3 program is going really well and the children are benefiting immensely from the
individualised, deep learning they are receiving through L3. Children have come such a
long way with their reading and writing since they started Kindy.
We can’t believe the year is nearly over and soon our Kindergarten children will be big Year
1’s! We are busily preparing for our end of year events including the Christmas Concert.
The children are super eager to perform on stage in front of the whole school!

We have had such a busy year in 1/4AW ! It has been so rewarding seeing the students work so hard and learn so much. They have been working hard to learn how to use the sounds we now know to make words, while some of our students have been working hard on their spelling pro-grams. We have enjoyed Mrs Calder coming in our room to introduce us to the TEN program which has seen our numeracy skills progress and we have had so much fun learning about number with dice, dominoes, cards and all sorts of new resources. We have enjoyed reading the funny books written by Pamela Allen and making all different types of craft to inspire our writing. We have learnt about Monet the artist, how food changes in Science, how to dance and about our family unit. Our class have loved playing different sight word games and having Miss Camellia come and visit us each week. This is just the tip of the iceberg, we have done so much it won’t fit on this page! 1/4AW ventured out on two excursions this year. We enjoyed joining Stage 1 at the Riverstone mu-seum and seeing items from the past. 1/4AW also joined Kindergarten for a trip to Golden Ridge farm, where feeding the animals and holding the baby animals brought much excitement. Alasdair loved going to camp and we all enjoyed watching a movie of him on the flying fox when he returned. We loved the book parade and having our whole class dressed up for the day. The classroom was full of princesses, wizards, knights, a cranky ladybird and even a minion!
We had new classmates join us and we were sad to see a classmate leave for a new school. We started the year with Mrs Ale and we all were sad when she went off class to do other jobs in our school but enjoy her daily visits. It has been great having Mrs Hearsey join us each Wednesday to continue our teaching program. There has been a lot going on in 1/4AW but it has been wonderful seeing the children smile when they enjoy success, work hard at learning new things, engaging in new experiences and developing caring friendships with each other. 1/4AW students’ continue to work hard at being safe, respectful, learners. We look forward to the many exciting events to finish the school year this term. Mrs White, Mrs Hearsey, Ms Robertson and Mrs Ahmad.
