Me siento muy contento cada vez que tengo la oportunidad de ofrecer las palabras de introducción de nuestro newsletter. Y más aún cuando haciendo una retrospectiva en mi mente, veo los importantes avances y logros acontecidos en tan solo pocos meses.
Quiero empezar citando el proyecto que lleva-mos a cabo en nuestra Oficina Conjunta de Santo Domingo de nombre “Green Wall”. Para aquellos que están poco familiarizados con éste término, se trata como indica su significado traducido al español, de una pared verde confeccionada y “sembrada” por así decirlo con plantas ornamen-tales naturales, que eficientiza la energía de un edificio, crea un ambiente visualmente más sano y tiene efectos de purificación del entorno en la zona donde es creado. Les invito a pasar por el frente de nuestro edificio para que disfruten de esta gran iniciativa, la primera en nuestro país. Aprovecho esta ocasión para informarles de nuestro recién firmado acuerdo entre el BID y la Fundación Ecológica Puntacana, denominado “Apoyo a la Conservación de los Arrecifes a través de la Pro-moción Turística de Jardines de Corales.” Que servirá de base para la preservación de nuestros recursos costeros utilizando el método de jardinería de coral. Les animo a informarse sobre los nuevos hoteles que estaremos inaugurando próximamente dentro de nuestra propiedad, so-bre los reconocimientos recientemente otorgados, y disfruten en esta edición de todas las actividades que se desarrollaron en los últimos meses comprendidos entre diciembre y esta fecha. Dios permita a todos disfrutar de una temporada de verano en alegría, saludo y armonía familiar!
I feel very happy whenever I have the opportunity to offer the introductory words of our newsletter, and even more so, when looking back, I get the chance to grasp the many achievements that we are able to accomplish in just a few months.
I want to start by citing a project carried out in our Santo Domingo Office that has made us very proud, the “Green Wall.” For those who are un-familiar with this term, it is as described by its name, a green wall tailored and “planted” with natural ornamental plants that optimizes the use of energy in a building, creates a more visually healthy environment and has purification effects around the area in which it is created. The façade of our Santo Domingo office building now has the first Green Wall in the Dominican Republic; please make sure to visit when you are in the city. I’d like to use this opportunity to inform you of the recently signed agreement between the Interamerican Development Bank and the Pun-tacana Ecological Foundation, called “Support of
Coral Reef Conservation through the Promotion of Coral Reef Garden Tourism.” This project will serve as the basis for the preservation of our coastal resources, using the coral gardening method. Hopefully, this initiative will be reproduced within the Dominican Republic and the entire Caribbean, helping save our coral reef barriers, thus improving the quality of the beaches and marine life. I encourage you to learn more about these projects and the new hotels that we will be soon be opening within our property, as well as about the recently granted recognitions that we have been awarded. May you all to enjoy a summer season filled with joy, greetings and family harmony!

Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, plans to debut its Wes-tin brand in the Dominican Republic in late 2013 at the exclu-sive resort property, PUNTACANA Resort & Club. The franchise agreement for The Westin Puntacana Resort was announced by Starwood’s development partner Grupo Puntacana at the Dominican Annual Tourism Exchange (DATE), the 13th annual conference hosted by the Ministry of Tourism. “La Copa Guarino”, que celebra el propietario Paul Guarino desde hace 4 años, es una competencia amistosa al estilo Ryder Cup donde se otorga un punto por pareja, un punto individual y un punto para el equipo. El torneo se celebro en el mes de marzo en el campo de Golf de Corales. El torneo conto con 40 participantes de USA y Rep. Do-minicana. El equipo ganador resulto ser el Americano.
El 1ro de Abril fue celebrado el Punta Cana 10k edición 2012, contando con la partici-pación de profesionales y aficionados del deporte de todo el país, especialmente propi-etarios y amigos de PUNTACANA Resort & Club. Esta actividad afirma el apoyo a activi-dades recreativas y saludables para toda la familia por parte de la comunidad de Punta Cana. El 10k se realizó recorriendo los diferentes vecindarios de PUNTACANA Resort & Club además de un hermoso tramo a la orilla del mar.
El equipo de soccer del PUNTACANA International School resultó campeón de la región Este, al participar en las eliminatorias regionales de la Copa intercolegial de Futbol Coca Cola, donde además participaron varios colegios de La Romana, San Pedro de Macorís e Higuey. El torneo persigue la interacción sana de estudiantes de colegios de todo el país a través de este deporte mundial.
PUNTACANA International School’s soccer team has won the eastern regional playoffs of the Coca Cola Cup inter-school soccer tournament, playing against several schools from La Romana, San Pedro de Macorís and Higuey. The tournament encourages healthy interaction through this global sport between students from schools across the country.
The “Guarino Cup”, has been organized for the past 4 years by home owner Paul Guari-no. It’s a friendly competition, Ryder’s Cup style, in which one point is awarded per couple, one per individual and one per team. Last march, 40 players from the USA and Dominican Republic, played the tournament at the Corales Golf Course, with the USA team winning the match.
The 2012 10k race was held in Punta Cana on April 1st, with professional and amateur runners from all over the country taking part, especially owners and friends of the PUNTACANA Resort & Club. This event reflects the Punta Cana community’s support for recreational and healthy activities for all the family. The 10k route passed through all the different neighborhoods of PUNTACANA Resort & Club as well as a scenic stretch along the seafront.

Once again, the management of Punta Cana International Air-port and the PUNTACANA Ecological Foundation joined forces to organize a golf tournament that seeks to encourage community development in our area. This tournament, which has been held for three years running on the La Cana and Corales golf courses, raises funds for two programs, one of which is aimed at changing the lives of young people in the communities of Verón, La Otra Banda and the surrounding areas through the Junior Golf Program, which awards scholarships to young people from low-income families so that they may develop their skills in this challenging sport. It also supports the marine coastal project managed by the Ecological Foundation, for planting corals and extending the coral garden plant nurseries that seek to preserve our reefs and coastal resources. The event organizers are grate-ful for the overwhelming support received from owners, compa-nies, foreign visitors and friends who attended the event.
Una vez más la administración del Aeropuerto Internacional de Punta Cana y la Fundación Ecológica PUNTACANA unen esfuer-zos organizando un torneo de golf que persigue favorecer el desarrollo comunitario de nuestra zona. Este torneo se realiza desde hace ya 3 años en los campos de golf de la Cana y Corales, recaudando fondos para dos programas, uno de los cuales per-sigue cambiar las vidas de jóvenes de la comunidad de Verón, Otra Banda y áreas circundantes con el programa de Junior golf, que ofrece becas a jóvenes de escasos recursos para que puedan desarrollar sus habilidades en este retador deporte. Además de apoyar el proyecto costero marino manejado por la fundación ecológica para la siembra de corales y ampliación de los viveros de corales buscando la preservación de nuestros ar-recifes y recursos costeros. Los organizadores del evento agra-decen el masivo respaldo de propietarios, empresas, visitantes extranjeros y amigos que asistieron a la actividad.

Durante dos días de pura adrenalina, kitesurfistas nacionales e internacionales exhibieron su talento sobre las aguas, en la ter-cera versión del Kite Fest Puntacana. La exhibición se realizó en el restaurante Playa Blanca de Pun-tacana Resort & Club, que cuenta con las condiciones de viento ideales para Kitesurfistas de todos los niveles, además de que es una playa preciosa de agua planas. Este año, el Kite Fest Puntacana contó con la participación de los campeones dominicanos Alex Soto, Robinson Hilario y Ariel Corniel, Ben Meyer desde Colorado, Cameron Dietrich, y el campeón británico Ned Taylor entre otros. Los asistentes al evento disfrutaron además, de actividades complementarias, como lecciones de Kitesurf, juegos de voleibol, futbol, practica-ron paddle, y música en vivo.

The beach area of Puntacana Resort & Club’s, Playa Blanca Res-taurant served as the backdrop for the exhibition, which boasts the ideal wind conditions for kite surfers of all skill levels, in ad-dition to its impressive flat water beach.
This year, the following kite surf professionals participated: Alex Soto, Robinson Hilario and Ariel Corniel (all Dominican). From Colorado: Cameron Dietrich and the British champion Ned Tay-lor. Those that assisted enjoyed free activities such as kitesurf lessons, volleyball, soccer, paddle and enjoyed live music!

A
More than 8,000 tourists romped to this year’s fifth annual Pun-ta Cana Carnaval, an event to showcase folklore and culture or-ganized by the Puntacana Group, with the collaboration of the Union Vegana Carnaval.
“The Punta Cana Carnaval seeks to especially promote Domini-can culture and folklore around the world and to the thousands of tourists who visit our country’s East region,” said Puntacana Group President and CEO, Frank Rainieri, in his message to open the parade, dedicated to the folklore legend, Dagoberto Tejeda.
This year, several international displays participated in the pa-rade from Taiwan, Curazao, Haiti and Puerto Rico.
Más de 8 mil turistas disfrutaron este año de la quinta versión del Carnaval de Punta Cana, un evento cultural folklórico or-
ganizado por el Grupo Puntacana, con la colaboración de la Unión Carnavalesca Vegana.
“El Carnaval de Punta Cana busca promover la cultura y el folklore dominicano en todo el mundo y en especial a los miles de turistas que visitan la región Este de nuestro país”, expresó el Presidente y CEO del Grupo Puntacana,
Frank Rainieri, durante su mensaje de apertura del desfile de carnaval.
Este año el Rey Momo del Carnaval fue Dagoberto Tejeda Ortiz, sociólogo, folklorista e investigador dominicano, quien desfiló en un Mustang antiguo rojo, conducido por Frank Rainieri, pres-idente del Grupo Puntacana. Tejeda dijo “estar convencido de que el Carnaval Punta Cana llegará a convertirse en el carnaval del Caribe, y el más importante de la región”.
Este año participaron como invitados especiales del carnaval, las comparsas internacionales de Taiwan, Curazao, Haití y Pu-erto Rico y una selección de las mejores de la República Do-minicana.

Property owners and visitors were able to enjoy a variety of ac-tivities such as sports, concerts, family activities and much more during Spring Break 2012 at Puntacana Resort & Club. The ac-tivities started with a cocktail offered by Oscar de la Renta’s new boutique store located in Tortuga Bay, which currently offers a variety of his spring-summer 2012 season. The Lapp Family hosted a beautiful concert at La Cana Golf & Beach Club, directed by Jose Antonio Molina and interpreted by the Molina Philharmonic Orquestra, and with a special partici-pation on behalf of Maridalia Hernandez. During this weekend, golf and tennis tournaments took place, as well as a Zumba Master Class on the beach by Carlos Tor-res. At Playa Blanca, the traditional Electro 80s party took place at night, with several DJs such as Desyn Massielo from Englad, Juan Tomas Mejia from Miami, and local DJ Jean Montalvo. All of them were played a variety of 80s music combined with elec-tronic.

Del 17 al 19 de abril fue celebrado DATE, la feria turística que durante años ha facilitado la interacción económica entre sup-lidores de servicios hoteleros y tour operadores de todo el país. PUNTACANA Resort & Club expuso en esta actividad las innova-ciones que traerá a partir de este año ampliando su cartera de servicios para todos los clientes. Entre los proyectos menciona-dos estuvo la inauguración en octubre del 2012 del Hotel Four Points by Sheraton en PUNTACANA Village, frente al Aeropuerto Internacional de Punta Cana facilitando la estadía a clientes de negocios que visitan el área de Punta Cana, además del Wes-tin Puntacana Resort que será construido dentro del complejo de PUNTACANA Resort & Club en la parte costera dinamizando aun más las visitas de turistas al área de Punta Cana. Julio Lli-bre, presidente de Asonahores resaltó la transcendencia de la puesta en servicio de la segunda pista de aterrizaje y moderna torre de control del Aeropuerto Internacional de Punta Cana permitiendo el creciente flujo de vuelos que ha superado los 350 vuelos semanales.

During the event, the PUNTACANA Resort & Club showcased the inno-vations it will be introducing as of this year, extending its portfo-lio of services to all its clients. The projects mentioned included the forthcoming October 2012 inauguration of the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel in PUNTACANA Village, opposite the Punta Cana International Airport, convenient for business travelers visiting the Punta Cana area, as well as the Westin Puntacana Resort that will be built inside the PUNTACANA Resort & Club complex on the seafront, further boosting tourist visits to the Punta Cana area. Julio Llibre, president of Asonahores (the Do-minican Republic Hotels and Tourism Association) highlighted the importance of the entry into service of Punta Cana Interna-tional Airport’s second runway and its modern control tower, which will accommodate the growing number of flights that has surpassed 350 per week.

Puntacana Resort & Club transformó la fachada de su edificio sede ubicado en la Avenida Abraham Lincoln de Santo Domin-go, en un elemento vivo y atractivo de cobertura vegetal verti-cal, totalmente integrada en su diseño.
En el diseño de la “Pared Verde” como se denomina al proyec-to, se utilizaron 12 tipos de especies de plantas resistentes con frutos comestibles y de bajo mantenimiento, que reduce hasta 10 grados Celsius la temperatura del interior del edificio con respecto a la del exterior, y un sistema modular prefabricado que permite tener vegetación de forma vertical a través de pan-eles plásticos y sistema de irrigación por goteo y recolección de agua, siendo la primera de su tipo en República Dominicana.
Otro de los beneficios de este jardín vertical es que protege la estructura del edificio de los rayos de sol, aísla el sonido, mejora la calidad ambiental del recinto, purifica el aire, produciendo oxígeno y absorbiendo el CO2 y otros contaminantes volátiles emitidos por el tráfico o la industria.
“A través de los años hemos implementado un modelo de tu-rismo sostenible y socialmente consciente del medio ecológico, utilizando técnicas innovadoras para el manejo y reducción de la carga ambiental”, expresó Frank Rainieri, Presidente & CEO del Grupo Puntacana.
“Puntacana Resort & Club fue el primero hotel/resort de la Región Este en construir un sistema de tratamiento de aguas basado en el reciclaje y ejecutar un programa de “Descarga Cero” basándose en prácticas de compostaje y re-uso de los desperdicios inorgánicos”, agregó Rainieri.

Puntacana Resort & Club has transformed the facade of its building on Santo Domingo’s Abraham Lincoln Avenue into a liv-ing and attractive feature with vertical plant cover, completely blended into its design.
The design of the “Green Wall’, as the project is called, involved 12 types of hardy and low-maintenance plant species with ed-ible fruit, reducing the building’s indoor temperature by 10 de-grees Celsius compared to outdoors, and a pre-fabricated mod-ular system that allows for vertical vegetation growth through plastic panels and a drip irrigation and water harvesting system, being the first of its kind in the Dominican Republic.
Another benefit of this vertical garden is that it protects the building structure from the sun’s rays, reduces noise, improves the environmental quality of the premises, purifies the air, pro-duces oxygen and absorbs CO2 and other volatile pollutants emitted by traffic or industry.
“Over the years we have implemented an environmentally sus-tainable and socially aware tourism model using innovative techniques for managing and reducing environmental load,” said Frank Rainieri, President & CEO of Grupo Puntacana.
“Puntacana Resort & Club was the first hotel/resort in the East-ern Region to establish a recycling-based water treatment sys-tem and to implement a “Zero Waste” program based on com-posting and reuse of inorganic refuse,” added Rainieri.

as bio-fuel for PLS Laundry
The PLS industrial laundry is taking the first steps towards be-coming the country’s first renewable energy-fuelled laundry. The use of the biomass furnace system is expected to reduce fuel costs.
The current cost of thermal production (vapor) in the produc-tion processes (hot water, drying and ironing) amounts to 45% of the total. This high cost is the consequence of the high fossil fuel prices, which has led us to explore other options for reduc-ing these high costs and that are environmentally friendly at the same time. As a result, we have come up with the biomass pro-ject, which uses only material of biological origin. In the case of PLS we will be using forest material, grass from the golf course, garden waste from green areas, clearing of lots and/or construc-tion sites, as well as using garden waste from neighboring ho-tels. We are also exploring the possibility of using all waste that cannot be classified that is currently being burned in the inciner-ator, which means we will be able to stop using this incinerator, halting the emissions of pollutants while also reducing this cost.
The investment cost is some 2.1 million dollars. With the cur-rent price and its trend, added to the current PLS production, it is estimated that this investment will be recovered in 2 years.The idea is that in 2 years it will be a 100% Green Energy com-pany. This project complies 100% with Grupo Puntacana’s vision for the operational areas.

La lavandería industrial PLS da sus primeros pasos para con-vertirse en la primera lavandería del país en usar energía renov-able. Al utilizar el sistema de calderas de biomasa se espera una reducción de los gastos de combustibles para uso energético.
Actualmente el costo de generación térmica (vapor) en los pro-cesos de producción (agua caliente, secado y planchado) cor-responde un 45% del total. Esta inversión tan alta es derivada de los altos precios de combustibles fósiles por lo que nos ha llevado a estudiar distintas alternativas para reducir estos altos costos y que a la vez sea amigable con el medio ambiente. A partir de esto, hemos llegado al actual proyecto de biomasa, que es todo MATERIAL DE ORIGEN BIOLÓGICO. En el caso de PLS estaremos usando los orígenes forestales, grama de cam-pos de golf, podas de áreas verdes, limpieza de solares y/o áreas a construir, en adición se usará la poda de los hoteles cercanos. También tenemos planteado usar todo aquel residuo que no se pueda clasificar que actualmente se esta quemando en la incin-eradora, así también podremos apagar dicha incineradora, de-jando de emitir contaminantes y a la vez reduciendo ese costo.
Con un costo de unos 2.1 millones de dólares de inversión,con el precio actual y su tendencia, sumada a la actual produc-ción de PLS, se estima recuperar la inversión en 2 años.La idea es que en 2 años sea una empresa 100% Green EnergyUn proyecto que cumple en un 100% con la visión de Grupo Puntacana para las áreas operativas.

La Fundación recibirá también, apoyo económico de las Naciones Unidas para este proyecto de res-tauración de corales.
La Fundación Ecológica Puntacana, en representación del Grupo Puntacana, firmó un acuerdo de colaboración con el Consejo Dominicano de Pesca y Acuicultura (CODOPESCA), Cap Cana y Fishing Lodge Hotel para desarrollar un plan de co-manejo de los recursos pesqueros de la zona. El proyecto pretende reducir el impacto de la sobre-pesca en el arrecife e identificar oportu-nidades de empleo mas sostenibles para los pescadores locales.
The Ecological Foundation has received new support to expand the Coral Gardens restoration project and continue its efforts to protect the Punta Cana coral reef. The Interamerican Develop-ment Bank has committed $530,000 US to the project to ex-pand it into other regions of the country, develop programs to incorporate tourists, volunteers and local fishermen in the pro-ject and to provide training to other regions of the Caribbean in coral restoration. The United Nations Small Grants Program (PPS) has also committed resources to support the Coral Gar-dens project.
The Ecological Foundation also signed a collaborative agree-ment with the Dominican Council on Fisheries (CODOPESCA), Cap Cana and Fishing Lodge Hotel to develop a co-management plan for the regions’ fisheries. The project will reduce fishing pressures on the reef while providing new environmentally sus-tainable employment opportunities for local fishermen.

Ya entrando en su cuarto año, en el mes de abril la Fundación Ecológica y sus socios de los proyectos, Peregrine Fund y So-ciedad Ornitológica Hispaniola, emprendieron nuevamente la reintroducción del Gavilán de la Hispaniola en la zona de Punta Cana. Gracias a los esfuerzos de este proyecto, el gavilán, una de las especies en mayor peligro de extinción del mundo, ya cuenta con una población de 12 aves radicadas en Punta Cana. Durante el año, se colocaron radio transmisores en cada gavilán. Para los interesados, la Fundación está ofreciendo caminatas orientadas a la observación de estas aves en Puntacana Resort & Club. Now entering its fourth year, the Ecological Foundation and pro-ject partners from the Peregrine Fund and Hispaniola Ornitho-logical Society will begin reintroductions of the highly endan-gered Ridgway’s Hawk in Punta Cana once again in April. The current population is estimated at 12 reintroduced hawks. Dur-ing the year, all of the hawks were outfitted with radio collars. The Foundation will also be offering guided bird observation walks from the Puntacana Hotel beginning in May. Homeown-ers and others interested in participating can contact the Eco-logical Foundation to participate in the tours.

Durante este operativo, encabezado por el Dr. Miguel Zato, residente en Puntacana Resort & Club, serán ben-eficiados aproximadamente 150 pacientes de escasos recursos, quienes recibirán evaluación, cirugía, medicinas, tratamiento y seguimiento gratuito. Esta jornada medica esta apoyada por el Instituto de Ciencias Visuales de España, Dr. Miguel Zato, la Clínica Dr. Cedano, el Ministerio de Salud Pública, el Club de Leones y la Fundación Puntacana.

Los pacientes infantiles podrán ahora recibir un servicio medico de mayor calidad en un área especializada y ser atendi-dos de manera mas cómoda y segura. The new facilities are fully equipped and furbished and consist of a waiting area, exam room, office and bathroom. Younger patients can now receive high qual-ity medical services in a specialized area, allowing them to be carded for in a safer and more comfortable way. Fundación PUNTACANA y Virginia College Osteopathic Medi-cine (VCOM) realizaron una exitosa misión médica comunitaria desde el 26 al 30 de marzo del presente año. Dentro de las principales actividades llevadas a cabo en las comunidades necesitadas de nuestra región se destacaron: Operativos mé-dicos gratuitos en barrios necesitados del destino Punta Cana, Taller Comunitario de Primeros Auxilios, Taller Avanzado sobre Emergencias para doctores de hospitales públicos de la región este, donación de Desfibrilador a la Clínica Pública de Veron, entre otras iniciativas.
The PUNTACANA Foundation and the Virginia College of Oste-opathic Medicine (VCOM) conducted a successful community medical mission from the 26th to the 30th of March of this year. The main activities carried out (in the needy communities of our region) are highlighted as follows: free general medical ex-ams in the underserved neighborhoods of Punta Cana, a First Aid Community Workshop, an Advanced Emergency Techniques Workshop for doctors in public hospitals in the eastern region, a defibrillator donation to the Public Clinic in Veron, and other undertakings.

En el mes de diciembre del 2009, nuestra Fun-dación suscribió un acuerdo con el Ministerio de Cultura de la República Dominicana para la exploración, ubicación y rescate de objetos de valor arqueológico que se encuentran en naufra-gios frente a nuestro litoral costero.
The PUNTACANA Foundation, in the continuing development of this project, has received its first objects of historical and ar-chaeological value. These objects are the property of the Do-minican Government and will be housed in the Cultural Muse-um of Puntacana, to be built in the near future. Since December 2009, our foundation has had an agreement with the Ministry of Culture of Dominican Republic for locating and delivering valuable artifacts which have been found in coastal underwater shipwrecks.

Tenemos una comunidad adyacente que es Verón, que nació como un pequeño pueblo de pescadores, pero que con el desar-rollo de la zona ha ido creciendo y actualmente cuenta con una población joven, que serán los hombres y mujeres del futuro. Esta población creciente requiere nuestro apoyo y creemos firmemente que la mejor forma de ayudarles es a través de una educación de calidad, está les brinda las herramientas nec-esarias para obtener empleos mejor pagados y crear un futuro más seguro para ellos y para sus familias.
Hemos podido ver de cerca la gran incidencia que puede tener la educación sobre el bienestar de una región entera con la ap-ertura en 2004 del Politécnico Ann & Ted Kheel, el único centro de educación secundaria en un radio de 50 millas del Aeropu-erto Internacional de Punta Cana. Este colegio secundario con su énfasis en las destrezas técnicas, enseña a más de 500 estudi-antes cada año de las comunidades aledañas de Verón, Bávaro, Cortecito y Cabeza de Toro, y ha mejorado dramáticamente las vidas de todas las comunidades de la región.
Actualmente, las escuelas de nivel medio de la zona están muy por encima de su capacidad, con un promedio de 50 a 60 es-tudiantes por aula. Tenemos que actuar con prontitud para re-mediar esta situación y asegurar que todos los estudiantes, sin importar sus niveles socioeconómicos, reciban una educación que les empoderará a lo largo de sus vidas.
Hacemos un llamado a su generosidad para apoyar nuestra mis-ión de construir una nueva escuela media en Verón, así colabo-rar con la lucha contra el analfabetismo en la República Domini-cana. Cualquier monto nos ayudará en nuestra iniciativa, ya que cada aula tiene un costo estimado de US$30,000. En el caso de que el donante elija cubrir el costo total de un aula, se colocará en la entrada del aula, una placa honrando al donante por su generosidad. Los aportes serán deducibles de impuestos en los Estados Unidos y Canadá a través de Global Giving.

We believe that the best way to break the poverty cycle is to provide children with quality education; this provides them with the necessary tools to secure better pay-ing jobs and create brighter futures for themselves and their families.

CONSTRUCTION OF THE NEW PUBLIC SCHOOL IN VERON
We have witnessed firsthand the great impact that education can have on an entire region’s wellbeing with the 2004 open-ing of The Ann and Ted Kheel Polytechnic School, the only pub-lic high school within 50 miles of the Punta Cana International Airport. This high school, with its emphasis on technical skills, teaches over 500 students annually from the nearby towns of Verón, Bávaro, Cortecito and Cabeza de Toro, and has dramati-cally improved the lives of all the communities in the region.
Currently, middle schools in the area are far beyond capacity with the average class size of between 50 to 60 students. We must act quickly to remedy this situation, and ensure that all students, regardless of socioeconomic background, receive a quality education that will empower them for their entire lives.
We appeal to your generosity in supporting our mission to build a new middle school in Veron and help combat illiteracy in the Dominican Republic. Any amount would be helpful in our en-deavor as each classroom is estimated to cost US$30,000. In the case of donors who cover the cost of an entire classroom, a plaque will be placed in their honor right outside the class-room. Contributions will be tax-deductible in the United States and Canada through World Giving.
