November 2016 The Principals Message Dear Parents, October was an exciting month at Laidlaw. Lots of learning is taking place for students and staff. We also welcomed a new staff member to Laidlaw School: Miss Caitlin Albl will replace Mrs. Mann. She and her husband have welcomed a healthy baby girl to their family. Fall has arrived with a blast of cool, crisp air, whether we are ready for it or not. Howev- er, the Parent Councils Groove-a-thon and Student Council Halloween activities gener- ated a lot of warmth inside the walls of our school to compensate for the cool weather. On behalf of the school staff, I would like to express thanks for all your support for both events. We send extra thanks to our Groove-a-thon parent volunteers who work so hard to make this event very successful. Please join us for our annual Remembrance Day Assembly on Wednesday, November 9 th at 10:45 a.m. Ms. Gouriluk and Mr. Thomas have been working very hard in planning the assembly so that all students can take an active role. One of the goals of our Remem- brance Day assembly is to remind the students that we are blessed to live in a country where freedom and peace are valued. October has been a month of learning for students and staff. The teachers met with many parents at our conferences to discuss student progress. As always, we encourage parents to discuss learning on a daily basis with your children and ask the teachers any questions that you may have as they arise. The staff at Laidlaw has established the three school priorities for this year: 1) Helping math learners to improve their proficiency with basic math facts in order to experience more success when problem solving; 2) Continue our work on improving the quality of written work with all students; 3) Continued work on respectful citizenship for all students, with a focus on better meeting the needs of our increasing EAL population. On October 21 st , staff members had the ability to choose Special Area Group sessions that would be of the most benefit to their teaching and their students. Although teacher are free to select any sessions that best address their needs in the classroom, this year many of the Laidlaw staff attended sessions that addressed the teaching math skills. My belief is that to have a truly modern school, the whole school – students and staff - must embrace learning opportunities in order to grow. Notes from the Music Room ♫ Submitted by C. Gouriluk

♪ Holiday Concert, December 5th, 2016 ♪

During November, Laidlaw students in Kindergarten to Grade 5 will be preparing for their upcoming holiday concert. The Kindergartens to Grade 2s will start off the show with some lovely choral pieces, and then the Grade 3s- 5s will present our musical Melton, the Warm Hearted Snowman. We are so excited to present the show to the community. See you there!

♪ Gr. 3 and 4 Recorder Reminder ♪

In January, each of our Grade 3 to 4 students will start playing recorder in music class. If your child already has a recorder they should bring it to the music room soon. If your child needs an instrument, recorders will be available for purchase from the school soon for $8.00. Recorders are also available from music stores (ex. Long and McQuade). It is recommended that stu-dents buy quality recorders (not from the dollar store) so they can be the most successful with their sound and ease of playing. If you have any questions about obtain-ing a recorder, please contact me. The school Remembrance Day Assembly will be held in the gym on Wednesday, November 9 at 10:45 AM. Parents are invited to attend this important event.

Band News Submitted by J. Thomas Hopefully you have been hearing some of the progress we have been making in class during your son or daughter's prac-ticing at home. The grade 6 band has learned five notes which we have used to play several songs by ear. We have also started to read music out of our band books which means we will be playing a variety of sheet music in no time! The grade 7 and 8 bands have completed their first band test, everyone played very well. We have a few different pieces of music on the go and are improving every day at playing with a bal-anced, quality sound - our current focus in class. Congratulations to Holli (clarinet), Mark (trumpet), Samantha (flute), and Emily (trombone) for being selected by the divi-sion for the Pembina Trails Grade 8 Honour Band! The group will be having sectionals at 5:30 pm on November 1 at Fort Richmond Collegiate followed by rehearsals on November 16-17 at Immanuel Pentacostal Church with guest conductor Bill Kristjanson. There will be a concert on the evening of November 17th at Immanuel Pentacostal Church, all mem-bers of the Laidlaw Band Program are encouraged to attend and show their support. Reminder that the following "open band" times are available to all band students who need a space to practice or would like extra help: Day 1 and Day 5 - 8:00am, Day 3 - 11:45am. What is the difference between tree nuts and peanuts?

Almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews, hazelnuts (filberts), macadamia nuts, pecans, pine nuts (pignolias),

pistachio nuts and walnuts are all considered tree nuts.

Peanuts are part of the legume family and are not considered a tree nut.

How can I know if a food contains tree nuts or peanuts?

Read product ingredient labels carefully to make sure they don't list any source of tree nuts or peanuts in the food. Often, different names are used for tree nuts and peanuts. See the Health Canada fact sheets found at the websites below for other common names to watch for on ingredient lists. Avoid foods and products that do not have an ingredient list.

Manufacturers may occasionally change their recipes or use different ingredients so read labels every time you shop.

Be cautious of bulk food items as they may be contaminated with trace amounts of nuts.

Watch out for allergen cross contamination

Cross contamination is the transfer of an ingredient (food allergen) to a product that does not normally

have that ingredient in it. Through cross contamination, a food that should not contain the allergen could

become dangerous to eat for those who are allergic.

Cross contamination can happen:

During food manufacturing through shared production and packaging equipment; At retail through shared equipment, e.g., cheese and deli meats sliced on the same slicer; and through

bulk display of food products, e.g., bins of baked goods, bulk nuts; and During food preparation at home or in restaurants through equipment, utensils and hands. For exam-

ple, if the knife used to put peanut butter on toast at breakfast is also used to make a sandwich for lunch, without being washed well, the sandwich may have traces of peanuts and would be unsafe to send to a peanut aware school or child care setting.
