Phonics Workshop

We were very pleased to welcome Reception

and Year 1 parents on 29th September to

discuss how phonics is taught at Parkfield.

Parents were able to get an insight into our

phonics scheme, Read Write Inc. and how

Montessori supports the teaching of phonics,

to prepare the children for the phonics

screening check at the end of Year 1.

If you were unable to attend the workshop,

we will be holding another phonics meeting

on Tuesday 10th November at 2:40pm, we

look forward to seeing you then.

Medical appointment during the school day

If your son/daughter has a medical appointment during the school day, could

you please notify the school office by phone or email before the time of collection

and bring the medical appointment letter with you when you come to collect

your child. The office staff will then ensure that your son/daughter is brought to

the foyer ready for collection and take a copy of the letter.

Today people across the UK will struggle to feed themselves and their families. Redundancy, illness,

benefit delay, domestic violence, debt, family breakdown and paying additional costs of heating during

winter are just some of the reasons why people go hungry.

This term our reception students are celebrating the Harvest festival and looking at how Harvest is

celebrated in different countries around the world. This is a time to be thankful and celebrate all that we

have, but also a time to reflect on others who are less fortunate than us and how we can give help.

With this need in mind, we have decided as a whole school, to make a collection for our local food bank,

to help others in our community who maybe struggling to fund the cost of food and living.

We would appreciate all donations that you can possibly make of any non – perishable foods, including:

Shopping List

Milk (UHT or Powdered) Sugar (500g) Fruit juice (cartons)

Pasta sauces (tinned) Soup Cereals

Sponge pudding (tinned) Rice/Pasta Tinned meat/fish

Tomatoes (tinned) Tinned vegetables Tinned fruit

Rice pudding (tinned) Jam/marmalade Instant mash potato

Tea bags/instant coffee Biscuits or snack bars

We would be very grateful if you are able to donate any of these items. Please bring them to the school

office by Wednesday 18th November. Thank you for your support.

National Flu Immunisation Programme 2015/16

The programme is now being made available to all

children across the country in Year 1 and Year 2.

Information relating to this initiative will be coming home

before half term.

Centenary Battlefields Tour Programme

On 4th October Year 10 students Kayleigh Elton and

Tom Webb along with Mr Williamson took part in the

Centenary Battlefields Tour Programme. Funded by

the Government and organised by the Institute of

Education at UCL, the £5.3 million programme gives

two students and one teacher from every state funded

secondary school in England to visit battlefields on the

Western Front between 2014 and 2019. The tour

joined schools from Bournemouth, Dorset and

Hampshire who travelled together along with Corporal

Shane Maughan of the 4th Military Intelligence Battalion who was able to provide insight

into how the modern soldier might cope with the events of WW1.

The first day of the tour visited locations in and

around the Ypres salient such as Poperinge town,

the Lijssenthoek Cemetery, the Flanders Field

Museum in the magnificent Cloth Hall in Ypres

and the Menin Gate. During the evening Kayleigh

laid a wreath as part of the last post ceremony

at the Menin Gate; a custom that has taken place

every evening at 8pm since 1928.

The second day saw the trip head back into France to explore sights around the Somme

battlefields including the Dud Corner Ceremony, the Newfoundland

Memorial Park, and the vast Thiepval Memorial to those lost on the

battlefields. The day ended with Tom and Kayleigh taking part in a

comparison exercise where they explored the similarities and

differences between a modern soldier and their 1915 counterparts.

The final day included the vast Tyne Cot cemetery before taking

part in an art project which will be displayed in 2018 and aims to

create 600,000 clay figurines to commemorate all those who died

on Belgian Soil.

Football

Year 7 & 8 Team

The Year 7 & 8 football team has had two fixtures against

Winton Academy this half term. They produced some really

encouraging performances. In the first match Winton came

out eventual winners 5-3. The lads played extremely well

and there were some great individuals goals from Noah T,

Cornelius M & Matt H. In the return fixture Parkfield were

3-1 winners with another battling and solid performance

from all the boys! The Goal scorers were Diego, Dan K & Matt H.

Year 10 & 11 Team

The upper school also played a fixture against Winton Academy. This was the first fixture that

these boys have played for a long time. They were a credit to the school with their perseverance

and battling despite facing a strong Winton side and running out to an eventual 9-2 deficit. The

goals were well taken by Anthony B and Dylan A-H. The lads will face Winton again in a return

fixture and are very keen to improve vastly on their first outing!

Primary PE

It has been a really busy first half term for our primary students. KS1 have been working

hard in their onsite PE lessons developing their gross motor skills. Ash & Holly classes have

been experiencing the art of Jiu Jitsu over at the Dojo centre. Oak, Beech & Willow classes

have been working on their Rugby Skills at Hurn Bridge, whilst Elm class has started their

Swimming lessons at the Littledown Centre.

The KS2 Sports club Enrichment Activity has also just started, in which the children will get to

improve their Jiu Jitsu, Dance & Football over the coming year.

Year 5 Sports ambassadors will soon be selected to attend the Bronze Ambassadors Conference

on Wednesday 21st October.

Year 4— our Visit to Scaplen’s Court

In topic the students have studied the ins and outs of the life of a

child in Victorian Britain. This has been a fun and theatrical topic.

We visited Scaplen’s Court on Thursday 15th October and spent the

day as Victorian Children. I’m sure your children have told you all

about it but here are some photos of their fantastic experience!

Hurn premises update

Last month Natural England confirmed that the bats had been successfully re-roosted and

therefore the construction company were given permission to recommence the building works.

I am delighted to inform you that this is progressing very well.

Block G and Block H have

now been demolished.

The demolition of Block C

will not take place

immediately as all of the

asbestos within that

building has to be

removed before

demolition work can

start. This requires

specialist removal as a

paint containing asbestos

was found to be coating

much of the steelwork

within the building.

A new build sports hall

and main hall will

replace Block C.

A fenced play/sports

area will be in the

position left by the old

Block G and Block H.

This will have football,

netball and tennis

facilities.

Block H demolished – Photo taken 11th September

Block G demolished and cleared – Photo taken 9th October

Families who attended the site tour during the summer fair in 2014 were impressed

by the classrooms in Block F.

These classrooms don’t exist anymore! Block F, Block D and Block B have now been

completely stripped out. Everything internally will be brand new.

Excellent end of year results for Reception and Key Stage 1

End of Key Stage results for all State funded schools are published nationally each year for:

Early Years Foundation Stage (Reception),

End of Key Stage 1 (Year 2)

End of Key Stage 2 (Year 6)

End of Key Stage 4 (Year 11)

End of Key Stage 5 (6th Form)

We have recently received confirmation of our 2014/15 validated results for Reception and Year 2

who were the only children at Parkfield who fell within the reporting categories last year.

Reception

The target for children in Reception is to reach a “Good Level of Development” (GLD)

Percentage of Reception children achieving a GLD:

Parkfield Bournemouth Average National Average

77.6% 71.7% 66%

Year 2

The target for Year 2 children is a secure level 2, (2B).

Percentage of Year 2 children achieving a secure level 2:

Parkfield Bournemouth Average National Average

Maths 89.8% 83.7% 82%

Writing 77.6% 74.1% 72%

This is an outstanding achievement given the difficult circumstances within our current building.

There is no doubt that the Montessori element of our curriculum made a significant contribution

to the excellent achievement of the children.

I would like to congratulate the staff for their hard work in ensuring the excellent progress that our

children have made.

I would also like to thank you as parents for supporting your child’s learning at home which

contributes hugely to their success in school.

Terry Conaghan

Principal.
