Dear Families,

It is hard to believe that it is the end of term 1 already – this term has certainly flown! Across the school children have been challenged with their learning and development and engaged in a wide range of activities to support their growth. I would like to acknowledge the high level of commitment by our staff in providing a high quality and relevant program for all children throughout the term.

Three way interviews Over the past two weeks we have been conducting parent-teacher-child interviews. Using our online booking system made the process much more efficient. There were 468 scheduled interviews which means that we were able to meet with most families. Teachers are following up with the few families that were not scheduled so that they can meet with the family of every child.

Working as a team of parent/teacher/child is such an important part in supporting every child to be the best they can be. A member of the leadership team is always present at the school when an interview is held, so you may have seen us walking around. Teachers have shared back with me how much they value and appreciate this time with parents in sharing progress, successes and next steps for your child’s learning.

As you can appreciate, with our aim to meet with the parents of every one of our 530 children it is a big demand on teachers in making long working days for them. So thank you to our wonderful group of professional and committed classroom teachers and school leaders for all their time and effort in making the partnership with parent, teacher and student such a success.

Cyber safety…. Social networking Having friends and connecting with others is very important to children and young people. They can spend a lot of time using social networking sites to do this.

Some young people use Facebook to keep in touch with family, and Instagram, WhatsApp and Snapchat to contact friends. Apps that involve messaging between individuals are becoming more popular but can be risky if children are messaging people they don’t know and trust in real life.

Most sites require users to be over 13 years of age. However, operators don’t have to ask for proof of age. If a parent provides access for a child under 13 it is important they supervise their use as there can be many risks.

As parents, we encourage you to make sure children and young people:

know that most messages and photos shared can be accessed by others

set privacy settings to ensure their profile is only seen by people they intend, and check these settings often

let you view their profile and ‘friend’ you or accept you as a ‘follower’ on sites/apps they use

know they can use a nickname that doesn’t identify them and an image of something they like instead of a photo of themselves

know the risks of ‘friending’ people, accepting ‘followers’ or ‘chatting’ with people online if they don’t know them. How do they know they are who they say they are? They may intend harm. There is also a risk that personal information or photos could be misused or their identity stolen

get permission from others before putting photos of them online and ‘tagging’ them. Encourage them to ask their friends to do the same for them. ‘Tagging’ provides information about the person’s activities and creates a link to their profile they may not want

know how to report abuse or inappropriate content to the social networking service or other agency.

It can help to set up your own social networking accounts so you know how they work.

We have booked a Thinkuknow parent talk by SAPOL Crime Prevention Section for late June and will email save the date information as soon as we receive confirmation.

Bikes at school We have recently had an incident where a child’s bike was taken from the bike racks. As a precaution against any future incidents, we recommend that all children bring a suitable lock to secure their bikes while at school. The scooter cage continues to be locked during school hours.

There is some more information from SA Police at the end of this newsletter, and we also have a limited number of “Bike Passports” available at the front office, or you can collect a copy at any police station or download one from www.police.sa.gov.au

Casual Day... Last day of term Friday 12 April

We will be hosting a casual day to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation. We’ll all be wearing blue clothes to support those with leukaemia and it’ll cost everyone who wishes to dress up, a gold coin donation. This event will take place on the last day of term and we hope to see you all wearing blue and supporting those with cancer. All donations will be collected at the end of the day and sent to the foundation. Thank you for your support.

Out of School Hours Sports Cricket The first half of the cricket season has come to an end and will resume in term 4. Cricket is quite popular at PPPS this year, with 4 Kanga teams and a team in each of A, B and C Grades. Some teams endured several cancelled games due to extreme weather conditions and a long weekend but have hopefully still been able to enjoy remaining games. Well done to all players for sticking with a game as fickle as cricket and to C-Graders who came 2nd out of 10 teams at the Lightning Carnival last week! A great effort Lachy D, Riley D, Tobi S, Austin C, Spencer H, Anthony C, Gurleen H, Finn C and Oliver T.

A big thank you to the parents who have helped with coaching, scoring, setting up and transporting equipment. School sport is heavily reliant on parent volunteers and your generosity is much appreciated.

Parent Workshop The Australian Council on Children and the Media (ACCM) presents

Dr Susan Linn: The Hostile takeover of childhood - protecting children from hidden online marketing A great opportunity for parents and teachers to engage with a leading expert on the commercialisation of childhood.

Tuesday 7th May, 2019 7:15pm - 8:45pm FREE event (but audience must register)

BOOK HERE

One of the most pervasive and troubling problems associated with children’s screen time is that most of the platforms and media aimed at kids incorporate overt and covert advertising. In this seminar, Dr. Susan Linn, founder of the Campaign for Commercial-Free Childhood and author of Consuming Kids will talk about how apps, games and digital devices benefit marketers at the expense of children.

In addition, Susan will discuss:

the ways in which children are developmentally vulnerable to advertising

the sophisticated data collection and marketing techniques corporations routinely use to target kids on digital devices

why children need us to create better policies to protect them from corporate marketing

practical steps families can take to limit the harmful effects of commercialism on their children

Venue: Concordia College Chapel 24 Winchester St Highgate Adelaide, SA 5063
