A sample of this type of ornament was shown and hung nearby - see photos. The demo was centered on dealing with Urchin shells and how to a<ach finials rather than the technics of turning finials. Several @ps were provided that making these ornaments easier: 1. Toughen the inside of the shells with watered thinned wood glue (or Mod Podge), 2. Cut squared finial blanks into octagon to shorten turning @me (see below). 3. Use @ght grain wood to obtain finer detail of finials. 4. 2017 Challenges

1st Qtr: Finial longer than 6” (one continuous piece no thicker that 1”: longest finial gets the prize.

2nd Qtr: A turning where one piece fits into another (not permanently glued)

3rd Qtr: Turn something out of a tree branch less than 3” is diameter.

4th Qtr: Turn a mixed media piece (must be primarily wood but includes other media (i.e.: polymer clay, metal, glass, anything)

Unit made in Sussex, England - approximately 10 years old, used gently, but capable of turning massive pieces The VB36 Master Bowlturner Lathe - a masterpiece of English engineering is now being manufactured in Olbernhau, Germany, by Steinert since June 2013. The design of the VB36 allows unlimited access to the piece of wood - perfect for turning large bowls. The mainshaft is runs in lubricated plain bearings, bringing smoothness and almost no noise.
