SCAN-1990 International Symposium on COMPUTER ARITHMETIC,

SCIENTIFIC COMPUTATION and MATHEMATICAL MODELLING

The conference is devoted to some important new trends in the field of scientific computation, fol- lowing the tradition of the SCAN 89 Symposium in Basel, Switzerland (Oct. 2-6, 19891, and the seminars on this subject held annually in Karlsruhe and Sofia.

The new methodology for scientific computation aims at the design of problem solving environ- ments with automatic result verification, provid- ing full control over the effects of the computa- tional errors and the uncertainties in the data. Such problem solving environments have a strong impact on mathematical modelling, since they permit an evaluation of the effects of imperfect modelling and a reduction of the computational errors below known bounds.

The new methodology comprises new types of numerical methods as well as new software and hardware tools for their implementation, The tools include, e.g., extended arithmetical facilities (like accurate dot products and interval opera- tions) with proper access from high-level pro- gramming, or automatic selection procedures for operational modules from application-oriented specifications, but also new algorithmic tech- niques needed to contain the computational errors and to compute with set-valued data.

The conference should serve as a forum for the presentation of new ideas in relation with this methodology and for the exchange of experiences in its use in various areas of scientific modelling situations.

COMPUTER METHODS and ADVANCES in GEOMECHANICS

Computer Methods have become powerful tools for solving many problems in geomechanics and geotechnology. The importance of constitutive modelling and testing for geomaterials and discontinuities is recognized as a vital ingredient for robust and reliable computer software.

In mining and civil engineering for example com- puter methods have lead to improvements in design. Computer Methods are now applied to such diverse problems as rock mechanics, geophy- sics, geological engineering, ice mechanics, blasting and environmental geotechnology.

The field is expanding at such a rate that this has prompted the foundation of an international Association for Computer Methods and Advances in Geomechanics. This is the first conference of the new association but continues the popular series of conferences on Numerical Methods in Geomechanics (ICONMIG) with a wider scope.

The emphasis of the conference will be the interaction of computer modelling and field meas- urement. This will include advances in computer hardware and software and the formulation of constitutive laws for geomaterials using labora- tory experiments. In addition the verification by field measurements will be an important topic of the conference.

Date : 6-10 May, 1991.

Location : Cairns, Queenland, Australia.

Sponsors :

lurgy.

Other information - Papers are invited on the above topics and

other topics within the general scope of the Conference. Abstracts should be no more than 300 words and should be submitted to the Conference Secretariat as soon as possi- ble but not later than February 10, 1990. Abstracts should state clearly the purpose and conclusions of the final paper, Both abstracts and papers will be reviewed,

- As part of the conference there will be an exhibition of computer hardware, including supercomputers and software including CAD and mine design systems.

- Limited funds will be available to support full time students and junior researchers, who show exceptional merit, to enable them to attend the conference.

- It is planned to organise post conference tours to one of the largest underground mines in the world and to dam and tunnel sites in Australia. As part of the confer- ence an exciting accompanying persons pro- gram will be organised which will include snorkeling on the reef and sightseeing in Crocodile Dundee country.
