FROM THE HEADMASTER'S DESK
Dear Parents,
It has been an incredibly busy few weeks at Oliver
House. Thank you to those parents who came and
supported our recent Verse Speaking Competition. It
was a really wonderful evening and I thought that all of
the children did an outstanding job. It always amazes me
that the children are able to display such poise and
confidence when performing in front of such a large
audience. The evening was such a success that the Verse
Speaking Competition will now be an annual event in the
Oliver House calendar.
Thursday of last week saw our Year 3 children perform
Mermaids versus Pirates. The children were fantastic and
they put on a really funny and enjoyable show. I would
like to thank Mrs Summerhayes and Miss Wade who
both put in a huge amount of time and effort helping the
children to prepare.
Last Friday I attended the first Oliver House breakfast
for fathers and sons. It was a really lovely start to the
day and the boys really enjoyed having their dads spend
some time in school with them. Later in the year we will
be hosting a father’s and daughter’s breakfast and also
events for our mums. These important family events will
also become an annual addition to the school calendar.
On Wednesday of this week we look forward to
welcoming Richard Buck to Oliver House. I know the
children are really looking forward to meeting Richard
and I am sure they will really enjoy their PE lessons with
a former Olympian and European 400m champion!
As we come to the end of another busy and exciting
term I would like to wish you all a happy and restful
holiday.
Best wishes,
Mr Rob Farrell
Acting Headmaster
YEAR 3 PRODUCTION
Mermaids v Pirates
It's been a busy term for Year 3, who have been
spending lots of time on their production 'Pirates versus
Mermaids.' The children have absolutely loved learning
the songs and script for the show. We would like to
thank Mrs Summerhayes for her help with the acting,
Mrs Funsch for help with scenery and props and Mr
McGowan for accompanying us on the piano. We hope
you all enjoyed the show!
SCIENCE CLUB
Don't miss out on a fantastic opportunity to be part of
Oliver House's first Science club. Science Experts a
group called 'Mad Science' will be coming into the school
to start our Science Week with a BANG!! As part of this
we will hold two clubs at the school. Pre-Prep will take
place on Monday after school and Prep will take place on
Tuesday. I am pleased to say that children have already
signed up but there are still spaces. If you are interested
in your son or daughter taking part in these clubs please
contact myself or Mrs Charles. (See attached flyer.)
SPONSORED LENTEN CHARITY
Lenten Fundraising Activities
This year the children have been involved in fundraising
events which will support the Junkabal school in
Guatemala City. The whole school has been collecting
loose change in collection boxes. The Prep children have
been sponsored for picking up litter in their local area or
cleaning around the home while the Pre-Prep classes
have organised sponsored walks around the school
playground (Nursery) or around Clapham Common (Reception- Year 2).
Please bring the collection boxes, the sponsorship forms
and the money raised to the school on or before
Tuesday 28th March.
On Thursday 30 March after school Year 6 will be
hosting a Cake Sale. All the Prep children are invited to
bring a variety of cakes: cupcakes, cookies, cake slices.
All the cakes are to be nut free and some gluten free cakes are welcome.
All the money collected will go the Wonder Foundation
which supports the Junkabal School.
Please see link for further information about our partner
school charity.

VERSE SPEAKING COMPETION
The Oliver House Verse Speaking Competition was a
great success and an enjoyable event for everyone. The
finalists showed outstanding bravery and performed their
poems with expression and confidence. The class poems
had been wonderfully rehearsed and were very funny,
causing moments of great hilarity! Congratulations to
James, Stephen, Emanuella and India on their
achievements, and especially to Michael, who was the
overall winner.
DADS & SONS BREAKFAST
Oliver House held its first ever Dads and sons breakfast
this morning in the dining room. Replete with fried egg,
hash browns, mushrooms, tomatoes and beans, we knew
it had been a success when Dominic Y1B asked “Are we
going to have this every Friday?”. It was great to see the
boys enjoying having Dad all to themselves, enjoying a
hearty breakfast.
Please book your places for Dads and daughters breakfast
on Friday 12th May 2017 at 7.45am via Mrs Charles.

YEAR 3
Trip to the British Museum
Year 3 had a great time at The British Museum on Friday
24th March. We walked around the Egyptian exhibitions
and answered some tricky questions. After lunch we had
a quick play in the park and then it was time to head
back to school. We would like to thank Mrs Selva, Mrs
Farrell, Mrs Swainston, Mrs Deasy, Mrs Faiz and Mrs
Funsch for their help on the day.
YEAR 4
Trip to a Jewish Syngogue in Nightingale House
Year 4 have been studying Judaism and the fact that Jesus
was born a Jew. We were able to visit the The
Nightingale House’ centre for the elderly and
experience first-hand the scrolls of the Torah, and
clothes that are worn in their services as there is a
synagogue within the home.
We were invited to speak to the residents and record a
message for Vera Lynn to celebrate her 100th birthday.
The children learnt "We'll meet again" for the occasion
and had a good sing-a-long. Here is the link to the
message they sent.

We have been invited to continue our intergenerational
activities with the home in the future - this is our third
visit to them.
RECEPTION
Trip to the Museum of Childhood
On Tuesday 14th March Reception went on a trip to
the Museum of Childhood. The children had a great time
playing with and learning about toys from the past. They
also got to have a ride on a rocking horse and play
traditional games such as Snakes and Ladders. Thank you
to all the parents that joined us.
On Wednesday 22nd March Mrs Connors visited
Reception to carry out an Easter craft. Given our recent
Living Eggs project Mrs Connors decided to help the
children make their own chicks! The children also enjoyed
listening to Mrs Connors read a story.
YEAR 4
Trip to the Ragged School Museum
This week Year 4 went on a highly educative trip to ‘The
Ragged School Museum’. They went back in time to
1885 and undertook a lesson under the stern eye of Miss
Poole, who armed with a cane and sharp tongue, gave
them a taste of what it would have been like to have
been taught in Victorian times.
They also learnt how poor the majority of children were
at that time and the squalid living conditions that they
suffered.

SPORTS
Rugby
On Tuesday 14th March, our U9 boys played their
final Rugby match of the season against Hall School
Wimbledon. I am delighted to announce the boys
finished in style, winning both games 7-6 and 9-7. Kofi,
Daniel and Thibault were just a few of our outstanding
performers, on what rounds off a fantastic Rugby season
for our U9 boys.
On Monday 27th March, our U11 boys played their
final Rugby match of the season against Thomas's
Fulham. Despite our best efforts against a competitive
Year 6 side, we conceded both games! However, it was
a great match to play as it proved how much our boys
have achieved throughout this term.
Hockey
The U9's played their final hockey match of the season
this week against a new opponent, Rutherford School.
The first match saw Oliver House win 5:1 with Beatrice
scoring all 5 goals, Iris was excellent in defence. The
second match saw Oliver House win 4:1 with Isabella
scoring all 4 goals and Paul was excellent in attack. Well
done girls.
The U11’s played their final hockey match of the season
this week against White House. Every girl was fully
committed to their team and worked hard to put into
play all that they have learnt throughout the season.
Both matches consisted of some excellent play with
strong passes and great dribbling. The defence worked
well together, with Martina saving many goals and being
named players player! The attack were assertive and had
the majority of the possession. The final score was 2:0
for the Blue Team and 1:4 for the Red team. Well done
girls, it was great to end the season with a win.

Lenten Charity Sponsored
Walks
Year 1 were most fortunate in that they chose a sunny
afternoon for their sponsored walk on Clapham
Common. They came across a workshop in the Mud
Club and Miss Del Barrio chased a frog, which she
eventually caught and placed in a jar with other frogs.
Year 2 tackled blustery winds and spring chill to carry
out their sponsored walk across the common on
Thursday. We took advantage of the various areas of
the Common to talk about local habitats and use our
science learning from the half term too. Thank you to parents who joined us for the walk.
