Finally the progress for our club is starting to look positive again and we have made it through the

toughest of times with relatively little damage.

I would, in this newsletter, like to make a special mention of Rob Laurie. When we asked club members to volunteer to assist with the COVID -19 problems, it was Rob who, when no one else came forward, took on that responsibility, ably assisted by Lea. Rob took on this position in addition to his formal role as Club Members Representative, which also can be a challenging task.

It is such commitment that keeps our club functioning. We should all be thankful that members like these two, will, when asked, not hesitate to come forward.

Wednesday (17/6/20) we had 7 boats start which is a good number (followed this week by 6 boats-ed.) and if these numbers are maintained it will ensure that we return our club to a healthy position. It is especially gratifying to see support from new faces both at the bar after racing but also supporting other club functions.

The Vice Commodore will in his report give details of the weekend off shore racing which will be another success for our club I am sure.

Good sailing

Wednesday racing has recommenced with good participation and great conditions on the 17th. We are

presently working out where we go from here with regards to the Autumn series which we have now commenced and how long it runs for. We will definitely continue until the end of July.

We had our first offshore race last Sunday June 14 in almost ideal conditions, smooth seas, 10-15kts and a few whales seen. Four boats competed with 2 others intending but couldn't make it. I decided to use a transit line created by the yellow special purpose buoy in front of Yamba beach and the pool for the start/finish instead of dropping buoys. This worked well. I will now change that and use the small amenities building to the north of the pool for the line as its easier to see.

The wind was forecast as NW and started that way so we went to the south mark from the start and then reached out to the SE mark before working back to the start/finish. By the time we started the second lap the wind had shifted NNE so the SE mark was taken out of the course and we had a good work back from the S mark to the finish with a race time of about 3 hours for the fastest boat, Another Dimension, with no doubt, won the race.

The virtual marks worked well although you obviously need a plotter at the helm otherwise a phone or iPad etc on a mount at the helm to know accurately when to round the mark. All boats used (or tried to) off the wind sails and a few realised they either needed more practice or had issues to fix.

My boat was used for race control and that seemed to work well although one issue for some was monitoring channel 16 as well as 72. Some radios have dual watch capabilities but we will need to

work out a procedure for that, probably have everyone on 16 and call for a change to 72 for course changes etc.

All boats logged on and off with VMR Iluka/Yamba going out and coming back. On that note someone in a small boat towards Brooms head had engine trouble and called in for help. The rescue boat was out in about 40 minutes to assist.

Our next offshore race is scheduled for the weekend of July 4th or 5th and I will update that as the forecast firms up. I’ll also redo the course map and should have the offshore sailing instructions done before then as well.

Hello to all the members.

Hope you are enjoying getting out, socialising in the club in our new ‘covid style’ we now all have to endure. But we

have to, so please contribute to this new safety requirement. Sailing Australia and the NSW State Health Department have made it quite clear and we have rules in place to act upon. A big thank you all from the Executive for complying.

We have been enjoying getting along to sailing on Wednesday and offshore sailing on certain weekends when the weather allows us to sail. So, if you aren’t joining us get along and do so. We would love to see you and encourage new members. Friday night drinks at the club and or for a sail.

Remember to call the club or email if you have any boating products, hardware or boats to sell on the Trading Wharf. And our club mechanise is also for sale.

I encourage captains of boats to check your safety equipment for current expiry dates. Remember old flares can be used as backups with new flares, however if you want to get rid of the old flares safely speak to you Maritime officer about this.

Last week I spoke to Marine Rescue about what is available for safety on the water.

If you don’t know about this app and its free to download on your devices.

“The MarineRescue App makes it easier than ever

for boaters to stay safe on NSW waters. It’s the only App that connects you directly to Marine

Rescue NSW.

In just a few minutes, you can Log On with Marine Rescue NSW and be on your way, knowing 3,000 professionally trained and equipped search and rescue experts are watching out for you.

When you Log On with us, we know where you’re heading and when you’re due to return, so we can quickly start a search if you’re not safely back when expected.”

Speaking to one of our local marine rescue members, he told me the great thing about the app is that your phone will ping every 20 minutes and will send a location to Port of Yamba Iluka Marine rescue (or tower relevant) so they know you are in the area. As you move along the coast line of Australia you will be tracked.

Advice from them also was that you should also log in physically at the tower when heading offshore as some captains don’t know whether their radio is working properly. Great to have that radio check.

If the uneventful does happen then the last ping they have from your phone can be use in a rescue. However, an Epirb should be used on your boat along with other rescue aids.

With Epirbs from 2021 there will be requirements to have water activated Epirbs for most craft. Best to get online and read about this. I must say great idea.

Grab a marine rescue app brochure and also ‘how to log on safely’ from the club next time you are there.

Safe sailing !

Cheers Kylie

GOVERNMENT SYSTEMS IN PLACE

Due to the current financial situation caused by the Corona Virus andslowdown in

the economy, the Government has decided to implement a schemeto put workers

of 50 years of age and above on early, manatoryretirement, thus creating jobs

and reducing unemployment. This scheme will be known as RAPE (Retire Aged

People Early).

Persons selected to be RAPED can apply to the Government to be considered

for the SHAFT program (Special Help After Forced Termination). Persons who

have been RAPED and SHAFTED will be reviewed under the SCREW program

(System Covering Retired-Early Workers).

A person may be RAPED once, SHAFTED twice and SCREWED as many times

as the Government deems appropriate. Persons who have been RAPED could

get AIDS (Additional Income for Dependents & Spouse) or HERPES (Half Earn-

ings for Retired Personnel Early Severance). Obviously persons who have AIDS

or HERPES will not be SHAFTED or SCREWED any further by the Government.

Persons who are not RAPED and are staying on will receive as much SHIT

(Special High Intensity Training) as possible. The Government has always prided

themselves on the amount of SHIT they give our citizens. Should you feel that

you do not receive enough SHIT, please bring this to the attention of your TD,

who has been trained to give you all the SHIT you can handle.

Sincerely, E.V.I.L. (Economic Value of Individual Lives)

This past Wednesday race was tricky. I heard the race marshals discussing how in light winds, sailing skill is tested. I think I failed the test, as I withdrew after drifting past the mark twice.

The AGM will be held in August, and as usual there are vacancies on the executive. All members should consider helping the club, and putting some time aside to take on a role.

If you would like to try your publishing skills (newsletter, or website), I am happy for someone to take over some of my responsibilities. I could then spend more time organising cruising events, etc.

Also please remember to pay your membership soon, the club coffers are a little low at the moment.

Cheers, Bill
