RESPECT RESPONSIBILITY RESILIENCE

From the Principal…

Public Speaking This week, we held our school Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking competition. There

were 11 students across Years 3-6 representing their classes, delivering prepared and

impromptu speeches. The effort of each student was commendable, with a range of quality

persuasive arguments presented and some strong public speaking skills demonstrated. The

winner and runner up for each stage were:

Stage 2 Stage 3

Winner Rory 4C Winner Austin 5/6M

Runner Up Ellie 4C Runner Up Finn 5/6A

Congratulations to these students, who will now be going on to represent our school at the

competition for Western Sydney region. We know they will do a fine job and we wish them well!

Reports At the end of next week, students will be taking home their Semester 1 reports. In reading the

drafts, it is impressive to hear about all the wonderful knowledge and skills that students have

gained, and about the hard work they are putting into their learning.

I thought it timely to highlight some key ideas about what is included in these reports. As a

NSW public school, we are required to include the following in our written reports to parents

twice a year:

information on a student’s learning in each of the Key Learning Areas (KLAs/subjects)

comparison of the student’s achievement in each KLA/subject against state-wide

syllabus standards, using a five-point achievement scale for students in Years 1-6 –

we use A-E

teacher comments for each KLA/subject, identifying areas of student strength and

areas for further development

information about the student’s attendance at school

information about student achievement in relation to school programs that extend or are

additional to syllabus requirements

information about the student’s social development and commitment to learning

upon parent request, information on how their child’s achievement compares with the

performance of the student’s peer group – we use a summary of the number of students

in the school year group receiving each grade for each KLA/subject

In addition to these requirements, teachers endeavour to differentiate a child’s report from

that of other students, through the comments on what they have achieved in their learning or

what they need to learn next. If you would like further details about your child’s learning

progress, social development, behaviour or commitment to learning, then you are encouraged to

make a time to meet with your child’s class teacher.

“Good words are worth much, and cost little.” (George Herbert)

Yours in education,

Elise Berwick

Principal

BICYCLES DONATION On the 6th June our school leaders went to the Leura Fairmont

Resort to collect eight bikes that were generously given to our

school.

A team-building group of adults were challenged to build 16 bikes in

only 45 minutes. Our leadership team, accompanied by parents, Mr Atkinson and Mrs

Field surprised the group by coming in and being presented the bikes. We were

presented with eight bikes in total which can be used for fundraising and to give back

to our local community.

So let's say a big “Thank You” for the generosity and this wonderful donation we have

been given.

NEWCOMBE BALL GALA DAY

Last Friday 14th June our school hosted the Newcombe Ball Gala Day for primary school

students in our Upper Blue Mountains Learning Community. Seven schools were in

attendance with more than 300 students participating. There were many examples of

teamwork and sportsmanship seen throughout the day, creating a very positive and

encouraging vibe. Students from Leura Public School were congratulated consistently

throughout the day for their fair and generous behaviour. It made me an incredibly

proud teacher of Leura Public School.

This event would not happen each year without the support of our wonderful teachers –

Thank You! Ms McMahon was a super coach along with her wonderful helpers – Thalia,

Ewan, Reilly, Rylan, Lauren & Kaylee. Also, thank you to our school administration and

support staff, particularly Mr Van Gemert, for their co-ordination of communication

and equipment. A final thank you must go to our volunteer parents, who once again put

on a remarkable sausage sizzle lunch, not only for our school but for all the gala day

participants.

We all have a ready excuse (or two or three!) for not volunteering. But what if we busted some of those excuses and proved to you that no matter what excuse you give, there will always be an opportunity for you to volunteer. EXCUSE #1 – I’M TOO BUSY! Aren’t we all?!? Volunteering doesn’t mean taking up a whole day, or your whole week. You can give as little as half an hour to just ONE event. One half hour of your time ONCE a year, and you’re done and dusted! If every parent/carer did this, every P&C event would be awesome and our regular volunteers wouldn’t burn out. So check your schedule. What miniscule part of your week could you sacrifice in order to help our next event, and all for the benefit of your children? Stay tuned for another busted excuse in our next issue!

That most of the food we offer in the Canteen is home-made or made in-house? The mini muffin bites, jelly cups, sausage rolls, sandwiches or jaffles or toasties, Veggie Rockets, and most of the Weekly Specials are all made by our wonderful volunteers. Our aim is to serve you healthy, home-made food, without any nasty ingredients. Get your order in today through Quickcliq: www.quickcliq.com.au.
