One Pastor’s Thoughts

Lent begins March 1. After his baptism, Jesus spent 40 days fasting in the Judean Wilder-

ness. What will you do without this Lent?

The whole idea behind Lent is that we do or do without some-thing to prepare ourselves for Easter. For most of us, Lent is a matter of spiritual devotion. Jesus lived a very simple life. What can you do this Lent that will simplify your life?

One proven way of making Lent simple is to do without a favorite food or drink. If Jesus could do without all food and drink for 40 days, we can certainly do without a favorite.

Some people do without something they should give up any-way. If you can go 40 days without it, maybe God can give you the strength to give it up permanently.

We will start Lent with an Ash Wednesday Service at 6:30

pm in the Sanctuary. Make Lent something special this year.

News for the end of February – If you are able, please join us for the YouthCue Baylor Festival Worship/Concert at 3 pm at the McCrary Music Building at Baylor University with the Baylor Symphony orches-tra. Our Youth Choir has been working to prepare music for this event. There will be 300 students from throughout Texas and surround-ing states who will be singing anthems that

honor God; that are prayers; that celebrate God’s love; and that look forward to the joy of heaven. Good News! If you cannot travel Waco, there will be a live streaming of the concert on Sunday afternoon. You can watch the concert by going to the YouthCue website at www.youthcue.org. The video link will be front and center on the home page an hour before the concert begins. All visitors will have to do is click on the video a little before 3:00 to view the concert. For the first time, there will be a video recording of the concert that will be available for purchase. To order an HD Video of the concert for 20 dollars, please visit https://www.youthcue.org/shop/concert-recordings/concert-video-2017-baylor-festival-of-youth-choirs/ Music and Worship for March – This coming Wednesday March 1 at 6:30 pm is the Ash Wednesday service. Please join us for this beginning to the season of Lent. The following information about Lent is from our United Methodist website – umc.org. Lent is a season of forty days, not counting Sundays, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday. Lent comes from the Anglo Saxon word lencten, which means "spring." The forty days represents the time Jesus spent in the wilderness, enduring the temptation of Satan and preparing to begin his ministry. Lent is a time of repentance, fasting and preparation for the coming of Easter. It is a time of self-examination and reflection. In the early church, Lent was a time to prepare new converts for baptism. Today, Christians focus on their relationship with God, often choosing to give up something or to volunteer and give of themselves for others. Sundays in Lent are not counted in the forty days because each Sunday represents a "mini-Easter" and the reverent spirit of Lent is tempered with joyful anticipation of the Resurrection. During the season of Lent, devotional books will be available to use each day. The church will also send out online devotionals. The books will be available this coming Sunday, February 26. Loop System – For those of you who are using our assistive listening devices and the Loop System, please let us know what is working well or if something is not working correctly for you. Thank you. SERMON SERIES FOR LENT

Evangelism: The first part of Evangelism is letting others know you are a Christian. Wearing your Lord’s Acre t-shirt is an out-ward sign of your belonging to a Christian Organization. However, not everyone wants to wear a t-shirt outside the home, at the movies, shopping, or having dinner. We are looking at collared button down or Polo Shirts that would have our new logo. These shirts will be available for purchase in different colors and as soon as we determine the final logo we will be taking orders. We are also working on a generic business type card members can give to those they witness too about God and how he is working in our Faith Family. It will have basic information such as service times, children and youth events. We will also have an invitation card that will advertise the sermon series Dr. Scott is currently using. We need your help handing them out in the community and as soon as they are ready they will be in the lower atrium for your convenience. The first weekend in April we will be involved in a Good Neighbor’s Mission project to fix and repair 5 homes in the Azle community. This is a mission through the Servolution Network and will include, Methodist, Baptist, and non-denominational churches working together for the better-ment of our community. The city of Azle is funding these projects in part but we still need donations of building supplies, paint and tools. If you know of someone who has access to these items please let Ken Leemon know, [email protected]. We need cooks to make and deliver lunch. We need prayer partners for the home owners. There is a place for everyone. Mark your calendars and become part of a crew

3rdAnnual Chili Cook off Results--Thank you for the many chili contest-ants, great food & desserts we had this past Sunday! It was a great time of fel-lowship and friendly competition. First place was awarded to Monica Goth and Bryson, Brenna & Brooklyn Ingle. Second place winner was Bryan & Molly Meyer and third place winner was Frank Shelton. Name tags--With many new members and some faces we may not recognize, it’s important to wear our name tags. If you need a name tag, please call the church office and we can get that for you. If you wear your name tag this Sunday, find Ken or Lisa and we will have a gift for you!! We look forward to seeing you Sunday! College Care Packages—It’s almost time for spring finals and our college kids look forward to receiving our care packages. If you would like to help pack, write notes or contribute another way, please let Ro Hodges or Lisa know soon. Also, if your kids have had a change of address, please let us know. College Kids—Baryn Shepherd will be leading a fellowship group for college kids over spring break. If you are planning to be home for break, let Baryn know so she can include you in the activities. She can be reached by phone or text at 817-578-7687.

It is with both joy and sadness that we share that we are moving from Azle at the beginning of April. We are moving to Lincoln, Nebraska so we can raise our kids

closer to our families. Family is extremely important to us and we feel it’s time to get back closer to home. Bryan will continue to work for the railroad. I’m unsure what I will be doing, but we know God will open the right doors and He will always provide for our family.

We have experienced great love and friendship during our six years at FUMC Azle. We have been truly blessed and have grown in so many ways. Our children have established a great foundation to their faith while we have been here. We thank you all for your love and support. Lisa Brightest blessings, Lisa Meyer [email protected]

The FirstKidz Ministry is designed to afford children the same, well-rounded ministry op-portunities our church offers youth and adults. Your children may experience God by wor-shipping with you at the gathering of your choice, through kid-style praise and worship in FirstKidz Praise, by attending WeeKidz Church or FirstKidz Merge. They may study the Bi-ble in developmentally appropriate ways in Sunday School in our Cornerstone Learning Zone, and/or during FirstKidz Worship Leaders on Wednesday nights. Older kidz prepare to make a decision for Christ through Confirmation, and kidz are given the opportunity to serve

through the Spirit with FirstKidz in Mission. Children are taught how to praise God through music with Mrs. Margaret, and are given many opportunities for special events.

Julie Clark and I are traveling to the Philippines this week with FUMC Abilene and the Christian Shane Fonville Foundation. We will learn about our UMC Connectional System as it manifests in the Philippines by spending time with three UMC Elders and a DS in three small towns. Part of the Apportionments our church pays help developing nations such as the Philippines reach multitudes with the Good News of Jesus Christ! We will get to see this in action. We’ll also help run a Youth and Children’s Rally in which 300-500 children and youth are expected to attend. Additionally, we will provide spiritual support for a medical mission taking place during the trip. Julie is a prayer warrior and she and I will be praying for those seeking medical assistance. Finally, Christian’s Youth Foundation is seeking land to purchase for the Youth Foundation. Our VBS raised money to pay for sports equipment in this Youth Center once it is estab-lished.

This area is ripe for harvest; the peoples of the Philippines are hungry for the Gospel! Please keep Julie and I and our travel companions from Abilene in your prayers for divine appointments and success to impact our brothers and sisters for Christ.
