CHAIRMAN’SCOLUMNDearall,
This year, considerable effort has gone into summarizing the stratigraphicevidence that the AWG and others have gathered to date, in our CambridgeUniversity Press volume on the Anthropocene. This volume brings together incoherent formevidence that isotherwisescattered throughoutmanydisparatepublications.Althoughitis(ofcourse)alreadyoutofdate,hopefullyitwillactasawidelyusefulsourcebook,andspringboardforourcontinuingactivities.
Those activitieshavebeenmost ably co-ordinatedas everbyColinWaters (asseen, not least, in the prompt appearance of this annual report), while a verywelcome recent development has been the contribution provided by AlexDamianos,whoaspartofhisPhDisnowworkingasaninternfortheAWG:Alexhasalready,forinstance,revivedandbeguntoupdateourlong-dormantwebsite.Wealsowelcometwonewmemberstothegroup,NeilRoseandBillShotyk,whoboth contributed greatly to the GSSP paper in Earth-Science Reviews andNeilcontinuedwithcontributionstotheCUPbook.Among the activities, a primary task, now begun, is to foster the search forcandidateAnthropoceneGSSPstratotypes.Therearepromisingdevelopments, forinstance theCrawfordLake section inCanadawherea teamheadedbyMartinHeadandFrancineMcCarthyhavebegunwork, ashaveateamfromtheLeibnizInstitute for Baltic Sea Research inWarnemuende (including Juliana AssunçãoIvar do Sul) examining an anoxic marine basins and possibilities clearly existamongtheChineselakesectionsdescribedbyAnZhishengandLiLiatMainz,inthehigh-resolutioncoralarchive,andelsewhere.Thisdetailedandpainstakingworkwill undoubtedly take several years. A recent announcement that BerndSchererattheHausderKulturenderWelt(HKW)inBerlinhassecuredfundingtocontribute to thisundertaking representsa step-change in theprogressof thisprogrammeofanalysis.Meanwhile,wewillexplorethesuggestion,madeattheMainzmeetingbyMartinandhisSQScolleagueKimCohen,ofsomekindofinterimstatusfortheAnthropocenebasedonournowmuch-improvedunderstandingofitsstratigraphiccharacter,andwehopetodevelopcloserandmoreactivelinkswiththeSQSingeneral.Thereisworktodo,too,onexploringthepotentialutilityofaformalizedAnthropocene,anditsrelationtorelatedconcepts.AhighlightoftheyearwasthemeetinginSeptemberattheMaxPlanckInstituteforChemistryinMainz,co-ordinatedbyAstridKaltenbachandColinWaters,witha large, involvedandenthusiasticsetofparticipants, includingPaulCrutzenonboth days. This meeting was notable for the warmth, hospitality and positivecollaborativespiritshownbyourhostsandwehopetodevelopcloserpracticallinkswiththeMPI,notleastregardingongoingGSSPwork.Themeetingindeedstimulated the newAWG logo,MPI-designed from data assembled by ClémentPoirier:showingchangeinrateofchangeofatmosphericCO2concentrationsover20000years,italltooclearlyshowstheAnthropoceneasaverticallineaftertheHolocene/latestPleistocenehorizontalone.

Beyondtheconfinesofchronostratigraphy,AWGmembershavebeeninvolvedintheAnthropocene’scontinuingwiderreach, throughsuchmeansasBerlin’sHausder Kulturen der Welt’s Anthropocene Curriculum project, the Burtynsky filmAnthropocene,ErleEllis’sAnthropocenebookandPeterHaff’sBeingHumanintheAnthropoceneblog.Moreover,2018sawtheuseoftheAnthropoceneasaframingconceptintheIPCCSpecialReportonGlobalWarmingof1.5⸰ C(thanksalsotoWillSteffen’s contribution to it) and theWWFLiving Planet Report 2018. These allremindus, ifreminderwasneeded, thatourparticularcornerofstratigraphyisnotjustathingofthepast.JanZalasiewicz
FOURTHANTHROPOCENEWORKINGGROUPMEETINGThefourthmeetingoftheAWG,coordinatedbyAstridKaltenbachandColinWaters,washeldinMainzon5th–8thSeptember2018,kindlyhostedbytheMax-PlanckInstituteforChemistry(MPIC).InadditiontomembersoftheAWG,numerousspeakersandattendees,notablyfromtheMax-PlanckInstitute,addedrichlytothedebate.PresentationsfocusseduponthesomeoftherelevantworkcurrentlyundertakenatMPIC,thekeysignalsandpotential environmentswhich could host a GSSP, the utility of theAnthropocene as achronostratigraphicunitandtheuseoftheterminthesocialsciencesandarts.
