AUSTRALIA DAY 2016 CHARITY PARTNER STEVEN WALTER CHILDREN’S CANCER FOUNDATION Our Australia Day charity partner is Steven Walter Children’s Cancer Foundation (SWCCF), which is based in Kirrawee. Steven Walter a young man who died in 2000 at the age of 19 after an eight year fight against cancer. In his final days Steven wrote a powerful letter to his family and friends asking them to raise money for childhood cancer research “so that one day no other kid would have to go through what I’ve been through”. Since that time SWCCF has been raising funds and working to develop long term fundraising capacity to benefit childhood cancer research in Australia. For every 10 children diagnosed with cancer, three do not survive and in Australia, that translates to three children losing their lives to cancer every week. We believe that is three children too many. Of those children who survive, many will have chronic health problems as a direct result of their treatments. Help us Meet the Challenge of 100% survival for all children diagnosed with cancer and the prevention of their suffering.

PATTERNATION 12 December 2015 - 7 February 2016Human behaviour indicates that we have an innate desire to find regularity and order in what might otherwise be an experience of disorder and chaos. Repetitions, rhythms, sequences, codes and systems assist us to navigate pathways and make sense of the world. While pattern in art is often thought of as decorative and ornamental, this exhibition considers conceptual nature

of pattern and its affinity with art, science, language, music and movement. Using diverse aesthetic strategies that employ painting, installation, video, performance and sculpture, the artists present new, site specific and revisited artworks that will engage audiences and provoke a reconsideration of our relationship with pattern.ohn Aslanidis, Cathy lanch ower, Mark

THE ENDANGEREDECOLOGICAL COMMUNITIESOF MENAIThe west of the Shire supports a number of reserve areas of bushland expressly set aside for the conservation of plant communities not well represented at a local or national level. No better examples of this exist than the Endangered Coastal Shale Sandstone Forest which occurs in scattered stands through Menai, Bangor and Barden Ridge. These plant communities are now afforded protection status under the Threatened Species Conservation Act and this can attract available funding at both the State and Federal level. Such funding was recently received through the Greater Sydney Local Land Services for four protected areas: Menai Conservation Park, Parc Menai, Brigalow Place Reserve and Dawson Place Reserve.Managed by Council’s Bushcare, each of these reserves contains an extraordinary array of biodiversity and all are conveniently placed adjacent to high usage areas with great access for visitors including wheel-chair access. For those wishing visit the Menai Conservation Park and Park Menai, Bushcare will lead a short walk on Tuesday 1 March showcasing some of the highlights of this beautiful reserve. This short one hour walk is suitable for wheel chairs.

NOXIOUS WEEDS: PAMPAS GRASS– CORTADERIA SELLOANADuring the months of January through to April you may see the distinctive cream ower spikes of Pampas Grass scattered through bushland, thriving in disturbed landscapes, rail and road corridors and can even appear in residential properties.Pampas Grass is a noxious weed in the Sutherland Shire; a Class 3 Noxious Weed under the Noxious Weed Act 1993 and legally must be controlled. In many cases it is easy to control by digging out the whole plant (if small), spraying with permitted herbicide and de seeding ower spikes to stop it spreading further in the bushland.Council has a long running Noxious Weed Program with Pampas Grass being treated for many years by bushland staff and contractors. This program has been successful in helping reduce the initial population to small hotspots around the Shire or a single plant here and there. If you wish to assist in the management of Pampas Grass please contact Council s Pest Species Officers on 52 5672 to notify of Pampas Grass locations or for more information about noxious weeds.

BUSHCARE’S ‘MENAI MANIA'Wednesday 20 January, 9am to 12pmThis Bushcare event is perfect holiday fun for the kids and it’s free. Recommended for primary school ages, parents are welcome to accompany their children. Registration is required as the race will have a staggered start with each team receiving an individual start time. Phone 9524 5672 to register now.

BE PREPARED AND KNOW WHO TO CALL IN AN EMERGENCY Emergencies can strike at any time and can impact your home, family, valuables and health. Emergency services are there to do all they can to help, however the best thing you can do is prepare yourself and your family so you know what to do in an emergency. It will also help you get your life back to normal with less stress and anxiety after the event.

Ask yourself, is my home located on bushfire prone land or ood prone land? Are there potential hazards around my home during a severe weather event? Visit Council’s website and look for the Local Emergency Management page which has information and links to help you with emergency preparation, response and recovery. There is also information on the resources and services Council offers during emergency situations.

As bushfire season is well and truly underway, now is the time to prepare your home. Remove debris and ammable items from your home and garden. Monitor bush fire alerts, and prepare a ush Fire Survival Plan which helps you make important decisions about what to do during a fire like when to leave, what to take and where to go.

Storm season is also underway. By taking a few simple precautions you can help minimise the risk of damage to your home during severe weather events. Maintain your yard and secure or store items that could blow around in strong winds, clean your gutters, downpipes and drains, trim trees and branches, check your insurance currency, prepare an emergency kit and check local media alerts.
