Come one, come all - families, friends, singles, couples!
Friday, February 17
All are invited to join a group from New Hope to see
Show Boat at Toby's Dinner Theatre.
Show Boat is an American classic! The story follows life aboard The Cotton Blossom, a
Mississippi River show boat. This timeless musical spans generations, telling a powerful story
of hope, freedom, and love while celebrating the music of vaudeville, jazz, and gospel with
some of the most beautiful songs ever written, including “Ol’ Man River,” “Can’t Help Lovin’
Dat Man,” and “Make Believe.”
The evening will begin with an all-you-can-eat buffet, with lots of choices to suit different
tastes, served from 6:15 – 7:30pm. The show will start at 8pm, allowing plenty of time to
socialize. As a group, we qualify for a special price; adult tickets are $52.55 (15% less than
the regular price), and children 12 and under pay $41.05. The ticket price includes dinner
(including coffee and iced tea), show, all taxes, and tip. (Other beverages are available for
purchase.)
Make reservations by filling out a form from the bulletin board in the narthex (gathering area)
near the sign-up board. Place your forms and checks in the box on the organ marked “Toby’
s”. We have a limited number of seats available, so don't wait!
Deadline for signup is Sunday, January 15!

Hymn of the Month: “Amazing Grace”
The following essay was written by Charles Wolfe and can be found at
this website: www.pbs.org/americanrootsmusic
For centuries, there have been songs that catch on within a community and take on a
life of their own, constantly evolving into slightly different versions for generations to
come. In America, there are a multitude of such songs that have seen an infinite
number of different incarnations and seem to live forever.
[…]The best known of these is Amazing Grace, a song so widespread and historically
important that PBS's Bill Moyers once devoted a full hour documentary on it alone.
The words to it were penned by a London man named John Newton (1725-1807), a
young sailor who followed his seagoing father and served in the Royal Navy. However,
he soon became involved in working on ships that transported slaves to the New
World, an experience that would haunt him in later years. In 1748, after his ship
Friday

almost went down in a storm, he experienced a religious conversion; he soon left the sea, and by 1758 had
decided to become a preacher around Liverpool. By 1780 his reputation had grown to where he was named vicar
of a major church in London. He also began to write hymns - some 280 of them - and in a book in 1779
published the first stanzas of what would become "Amazing Grace" under the title "Faith's Review and
Expectation." It was well-received, and by 1789 had made its first appearance in print in America.
These early versions of the hymn, though, did not use the
melody familiar to everyone today. That melody was
common in early America under the name "New Britain" or
sometimes titles like "Harmony Grove" and, oddly,
"Amazing Grace." The authorship of the melody is lost to
history, but we do know that the adapting of Newton's text
to the "New Britain" melody occurred in 1835; a colorful
song leader and evangelist named William Walker
("Singing Billy") put it in his widely used songbook
Southern Harmony. From there it quickly became a part of
hundreds of church repertoires.
The song got into an even broader range of popular
culture when it became a favorite of the folk revival
movement in the 1960s. It appeared in the popular film
Alice's Restaurant and as a hit single by folksinger Judy
Collins. Then, in 1972, the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards
made a recording of it featuring bagpipes, and it became
a surprise hit, both in England and the United States. The
recording helped establish a tradition of pipers playing it at political or military funerals, and at the services for
policeman killed in the line of duty. The song was heard often at memorials for victims in the days after the
September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Update on our guests:
2 of the men who were our guests are now housed at the Grassroots Shelter!!!!
November 28 to December 5 we hosted the Cold Weather Shelter for our 2nd
year. Our guests were well fed and very appreciative. We even had 3 guests
attend the 1st Advent midweek meditation service. By the end of the week we
had hosted 5 women and 15 men. Our partnership with Locust United
Methodist Church went well and we look forward to working with them again next
year. We also will be looking to expand our partnership with St. Peter’s
Episcopal Church as well. A HUGE THANK YOU to the 80 volunteers who made
this week special and successful. A very special THANK YOU to Suzonne Sage,
Kathy Piet and Emily Phillips who organized all the volunteers,
