challenge with high expectations. I ex-pect misery at every turn. But we'reboth stubborn, so when replacementparts don't fit or rusty bolts break, weovercome the mechanical maladies thatoften arise when working on old crustyCorvairs. And I've learned so muchabout the deep recesses of Corvair en-gineering from Brian. There's not apart on late series Corvairs that he has-n't repair or rebuilt. And so it's beenwith Mrs. Fisher's 1965 Corsa.

Since that fateful day when the Corsaarrived at Brian's garage, he's torn justabout everything apart. Everythingfrom the underside of the car has beenremoved. Stripping the undercoating(and dirt) was akin to The Agony andthe Ecstasy. Laying on his back, Brianstripped it off with air-tools, a propanetorch, paint scrapers and chisels. Thenear-bare metal has been re-primed andshot with Rustoleum rusty-metal paint, from stem to stern. The fuel tank, frontcross-member, powertrain, brakes, sus-pension arms, and much more were re-moved, sand-blasted and replaced;some with rebuilt parts from Clark's.Even the heater box has been redone. All new brake lines, all new fuel lines, new parking brake cable - it's all beenor is being replaced. This is going tobe one sweet Corsa when it's done!

This isn't to say that Brian is spendinghis customer’s money willy-nilly. Lotsof the original parts are being re-used,and I can attest to that. And Brian hasbeen sending photos of the before-and-after work along with bills to Mrs.Fisher.

The lovely Corsa instrument panel hasbeen disassembled completely, cleanedand re-assembled. The crackle finishhas been touched up with an artist'sbrush. We found a some burned insula-tion on the main wiring harness, so wedid a continuity test on the affectedwires. It checked-out, so we re-wrapped them. And the engine, al-

(Continued on page 4)

Brian put the car up on jack stands, re-moved the wheels, and began to assessthe work that needed to be done. Hequickly realized that, while this littleCorsa had a beautiful rust-free body, ithad little else going for it. Brake cylin-ders: frozen. Fuel lines: clogged. Con-trol cables: inoperable. Suspensionbushings: crumbling. And the wholeunderside of the car: coated with a half-inch thick layer of undercoating anddirt. The enormity of the project be-came fully apparent when Brian re-moved the tunnel pan cover and wasdeluged with the remnants of a mousemotel. Surprise!

Over the past twenty-five years, Brianand I have become good friends, andalthough we live one hundred milesapart, I've developed a habit of volun-teering a day here and there to twistwrenches with him. He's come out tomy place, too, to lend a hand on myCorvair. It's a relationship that's basedon more than just our fascination withChevy Corvairs. He's an optimist. I'ma pessimist. He looks forward to every

Many years ago, one of the members ofNJACE embarked on a restoration pro-ject. He stripped out all the bright workoff his wife's 1965 Corvair Corsa con-vertible and sent it to a paint shop to berepainted. After he got it back, he re-moved almost everything in the interiorwith the intention of replacing all theupholstery. And then, he passed away. The poor Corvair sat for years in stor-age.

His widow loved that car and, afterthinking about it for a long time, de-cided to hire someone to finish up thejob of restoring it. When Brian O'Neilloffered to do the job, she jumped at thechance. Brian has done extensive workon a number of Corvairs owned byNJACE members.

Brian's offer was contingent on onlyone pre-condition - that he be allowedto do the job right. No short cuts. Sheagreed. The car was rolled onto atrailer and delivered to Brian's garage -a man-cave with heated floors, fluores-cent lighting, compressed air, and allthe tools in the world

Foremost also pays for legal counselthe chapters would otherwise have tohire to defend themselves. In otherwords, lawyers hired by Foremost takecare of the legal action.

Like any insurance policy, CORSA'spolicy with Foremost has dollar limits. There is a general aggregate limit of $2million; $1 million per occurrence. Inaddition, there's an additional $1 mil-lion in umbrella protection.

The Foremost policy also has a prop-erty insurance component, but that ap-plies only to property owned by theCORSA national office, such as files, computers and software.

Who or What Is Protected?

The Foremost policy protects chapterofficers, chapter members who aremembers of CORSA, and even chaptermembers who are not members ofCORSA.

However, don't count on spouses andchildren being covered unless, ofcourse, they are also members of thechapter. And the policy does not covercontractors or vendors that may be in-volved in chapter affairs unless we addthem to the policy as "additional insur-eds". This can be done, but there is aprice for it.

When Are They Protected?

The coverage applies during chaptermeetings and chapter events.

It even applies during travel to andfrom meetings and events but in thatparticular circumstance, the protectionmay not be very useful. Here's why: Ifyou get in a car accident on your way toa chapter event, Foremost will not pro-tect you against any resulting claims. You'll have to count on your own autoinsurance policy for that.

The same goes for boat and private air-craft accidents. (I don't know anybodywho sails or flies to chapter events, butmaybe there's somebody out there whodoes!)

SP1200MP. Then, a few days later, several Corvair guys started a thread onthe Corvair Center Forum describingtroubles with the same pump. They areleaking out of the bottom gasket.

It’s quite possible that these pumps areactually manufactured by another com-pany, so it’s hard to say if the problemis limited to fuel pumps sold under theSpectra label. But in any case, keep aneye on your fuel pump, especially ifyou have recently replaced it, and carrya spare, just in case.

CORSA INSURANCE &YOU

One of the benefits of CORSA mem-bership is the insurance it provides toits chapters. But insurance policies canbe complicated. What kind of protec-tion does CORSA insurance provide?Who is protected? Under what circum-stances?

To find out answers to these and relatedquestions, we contacted Tom Meakim,of J.C. Taylor. According to Tom, ourinsurance policy is with Foremost Sig-nature Insurance Company. It coversCORSA not only on the national levelbut on the chapter level as well.

Tom is J.C. Taylor's Commercial Insur-ance Manager and he administers theForemost policy for us. Here are theanswers he provided along with someinformation from the policy itself.

What Kind of Protection?

CORSA’s insurance policy with Fore-most protects CORSA and its chaptersagainst general liability claims, whichare bodily injury or property damageclaims made by third parties againstCORSA. It also provides protectionagainst medical claims.

If a claim is legitimate, Foremost paysthe settlement or judgment irrespectiveof whether the claim is settled in or outof court.

though filled with goopy dirty oil, passed the compression test. A engineflush and a cosmetic restoration of theengine tin is all it seems to need. Brianalready rebuilt the four carbs.

There is so much more to this story. Somuch more to tell. Mrs. Fisher's Corsashould be ready for a road test in amonth or two. The car will need to belicensed and registered before it's backon the road. At that point, the brakesand clutch will need to be adjusted, thesuspension will need to be aligned, andthe engine will need to be tuned.

And there will be other to-do thingsthat will make themselves evident dur-ing shake-down testing. I'm a pessi-mist. It's inevitable.

FUEL PUMPS AGAIN?

Back in the 1990s, Corvair ownerswere experiencing a rash of failureswith their mechanical fuel pumps. Theproblem was traced to replacementpumps, not the originals. It seems oneof the largest makers of Corvair fuelpumps got a defective batch of dia-phragms and it took a long time forthem to be flushed out of the supplychain. Those who remember the situa-tion have remain wary.

This past week, Jerry Brown posted anote on VirtualVairs to warn readersabout brand-new Spectra Premium fuelpumps for Corvairs, Part Number

ficer sued another chapter officer forslander. It was unlikely that Foremostwould get involved, but J.C. Taylorkept tabs on the case anyway. As itturned out, the judge threw the case outbefore it went anywhere. The plaintiffwas ordered to reimburse the court forlegal fees. Claims like that can back-fire.

Exclusions

Like all insurance policies, the Fore-most policy has exclusions. They in-clude the typical ones, like war, nuclearaccidents, and terrorism. There are oth-ers, too.

Foremost will not pay claims associatedwith the serving of liquor at chapterevents. So, if you get blitzed at theconvention banquet and punch-out awaiter, don't expect Foremost to helpyou pay the bill for the waiter's brokennose!

Foremost will not pay claims associatedwith usage of cars, boats or privateplanes. It goes without saying that rac-ing is not covered.

The main thing to remember is this:CORSA insurance protects chapter andtheir members against claims made bythird parties. By that, we mean peopleor organizations who are not part ofCORSA.

Notification

If you become aware that somebody ismaking a claim against you or yourchapter, and if that claim is related tosomething that happened at one of yourmeetings or events, be sure to contactthe national CORSA office immedi-ately. In turn, they'll get a hold of J.C.Taylor to get Foremost involved in theclaim.

NEXT MEETING JANUARY!

Remember, our next meeting will be onWednesday, January 25, 2017. Elec-tions will take place at our January

Who Are They Protected Against?

The Foremost insurance policy protectsthe chapters from claims made by thegeneral public and other legal entities, such as partnerships, corporations, etc.

It does not protect chapters from claimsmade by its own members. So, if youbreak a leg at a chapter event, you're onyour own. You can put in a claimagainst the owner of the property, butplease don't sue your chapter unlessyou want to bankrupt it!

There was actually a case involvinganother car club where one chapter of-

It's hard to think of any other circum-stances where a claim could result fromtravel but if there is one, the Foremostpolicy should kick in.

Does the chapter need to advise theCORSA national office of events it in-tends to sponsor? Well, it depends onwhere the event will be held. When athird party, such as municipal park, church, or meeting hall requests a cer-tificate of insurance from the chapterhosting the event, then the CORSA na-tional office needs to advise J.C. Tay-lor. The third party will then be addedto the Foremost policy as an additionalinsured.

suspension. So they came up with anew kind of rear suspension, the low-pivot swing axle.

Mercedes introduced it in 1955 with thenewly-introduced "Ponton" series ofcars. Beginning in 1957, it also ap-peared on 300 SL roadsters and foundits way into the rest of the Mercedespassenger car line. Even the 6.3 literV8 300 SEL was equipped with a low-pivot swing axle right up to the 1972model year.

With the conventional swing axle de-sign, each axle shaft has its own univer-sal joint which pivots on its respectiveside of the differential carrier. There-fore, the suspension roll center must bethe same as the centerline of the ringgear, and that’s rather high above thepavement.

With the low-pivot design, only oneaxle shaft has a universal joint, but it isnot bolted solid to the differential car-rier. Instead, it telescopes in and out.Where does it pivot? From a bracketbelow the differential, closer to thepavement.

This has two effects. First, it lowersthe roll center, significantly reducingjacking of the rear suspension. Second,by having only one pivot point, the axleshafts are effectively made longer, andthis minimizes camber change duringjounce and rebound.

Now, you may be wondering whyChevrolet didn't copy Mercedes' low-pivot design when it designed the rearsuspension of the original Corvair. Af-ter all, it had been around since 1955.The short answer is this: It can't bedone.

Because the design of the Mercedeslow pivot swing axle has only one uni-versal joint, one axle shaft is articulatedand the other isn’t. (Take a look at thediagram.)

The axle shaft that isn’t articulated isfixed to the differential so, as the wheelon the end of that shaft bounces up anddown, it forces that axle shaft and the

tested with the engine off. Remove theshort hose that connects the diaphragmto the carburetor. With one hand, actu-ate the diaphragm in the direction thatthe vacuum would pull it and then placea finger over the inlet pipe. Removethe hand pressure and observe the dia-phragm linkage for movement, orrather the lack of it. A good diaphragmwill maintain the artificially inducedvacuum and the linkage will not moveuntil the finger is removed from theinlet pipe.

Count then, there are over a dozenplaces where there can be slight airleaks that make idle adjustments to thecarburetor difficult, intermittent, or im-possible. The vacuum advance dia-phragm on the distributor is also asource of air leak, plus the advancewon't work either.

Automatic transmission modulatorsalso will leak, causing rough shiftingand transmission fluid loss. Test thecomplete system by using the vacuumadvance hose as an extension hose.Disconnect the modulator line from thecrossover pipe and connect an end ofthe hose to the modulator line. (Withthe engine off) place the other end inyour mouth and suck a vacuum, hold itby placing the tip of your tongue overthe end of the hose. Your tongueshould sense that the vacuum is main-tained. If not, either the modulator lineconnection is leaking or the diaphragmis defective.

LOW-PIVOT SWING AXLE

The powerful 300 SL Gullwing coupewas a technological tour de force, butin the hands of inexperienced drivers, ithad developed a reputation as a "widowmaker." It's swing axle rear suspensioncaused tricky handling, which was not agood thing in a car with the potential toreach 160 miles per hour.

Mercedes Benz cars had swing axlessince the 1930s, but it was time for achange. Yet the engineers wanted toretain the comfortable compliant rideafforded by four wheel independent

meeting.

VACUUM LEAKSFrom Vair Force, Sept. 1984

Air leaks in the air-fuel induction sys-tem can cause a Corvair engine to runrough, especially at idle. Of course, you wouldn't overlook obvious leakssuch as carburetors with sloppy throttleshafts or coupling hoses with cracks.Would you?

You can solve most air leak problemsby the “shot-gun” methods: replace allhoses. There are two on the vacuumbalance pipe, two on the T modulatorline, to on the choke openers, and twofor the distributor vacuum advance, oneof which is plugged. Other sources ofvacuum leaks are the gaskets betweenthe carburetor and the head. (It’s reallya heat insulator.) These plastic spacersare known to crack.

The crankcase ventilation system ofttimes can be a leak source if someonehas enlarged the small vent hole or ifthe hose has split. A less likely air leakwould be a cracked carburetor housing, but it’s been know to happen.

If you want to locate a suspected airleak, first determine which side it's on.Remove the air cleaner and the associ-ated air duct. With the engine idling, place your hand over one carburetorthroat, leaving a slight gap for air toenter. A normal engine will reduce inRPM, because of the over-rich mixture. One with an air leak will increase inRPM due to a more normal fuel-airmixture. If the engine RPM increasesupon choking either side, there is morethan one air leak.

Another source for air leaks is thechoke opener diaphragms. These are

differential to rotate, much like a solidaxle. This is fine for a rear wheel drivefront engine / front transmission car.

But in the case of the Corvair, the dif-ferential, transaxle, and engine are allbolted together as one unit, so thewhole powertrain would have to rock-back and forth along its centerlinewhenever the unarticulated wheelbounces up and down.

Aside from all the mechanical jostling, this would result in a huge amount ofunsprung weight which would havemade the handling worse, if anything.

It's worth noting, however that, after awhile, Mercedes added a compensatingspring to it's low-pivot design, andChevy did so too with the Corvair in1964.

The link is https://smile.amazon.com/ ifyou want to take a look and/or pre-loadyour designated charity… May I sug-gest Corvair's own 501c3 non-profitarm, the CORVAIR PRESERVATIONFOUNDATION?!

To be fair, Amazon Smile's donation of0.5% for every sale may seem small, but every penny adds up, and thegreater the level of participation, thegreater the value to the CPF!

So far, this opportunity to help raise afew much-needed dollars for the CPFhas been only lightly-promoted but Idon't expect that to last. I encouragechapter officers, webmasters, andnewsletter editors to actively promoteAmazon Smile within your respectivegroups. And be sure to share withyour family and friends.

Again, every penny adds up, and this isan opportunity to do some good for theCorvair Preservation Foundation.

The Lehigh Valley CorvairClub is proud to be a certifiedchapter of the Corvair Societyof America.
