OCT 2012 Newsletter of Harbor City Wings Melbourne, Florida
To all of our friends and Members,
Another month has quickly past and we are into October. Hal-
loween is almost upon us.
September has brought a few kick tires and Lynn will speak of
those. Unfortunately the weather has caused most of us to at-
tend in 4-wheelers. We have still had great attendance and that is how we have fun
and enjoy the fellowship.
Eight of us went to Eufaula in Alabama. Scott and Sandy were the only ones who rode
their Goldwings. Sandy was the farthest female 1 up rider who went to Eufaula.
September has also brought back the school buses and most important, our future, the
school kids. Be especially careful during the school “start up” and “let out” times.
Kids do not pay close attention to what they are doing or where they are, so it is our
job to do that for them.
Remember our Christmas Party is at Marsh Landing in Fellsmere on December 15,
2012. Please put this on your schedule as we always have fun and would like to set a
new record for attendance.
Our November monthly meeting is going to be held at Jeff Bodines Honda on Apollo in Melbourne. Eat at
6pm and meeting at 7pm. Bodines is going to feed us at no cost to us and close the shop 1 hour early. We
are planning to have a meeting there once every 3 months or so, to see how we like it and if they can feed
this size group. The Cocoa chapter is going to have a kick tire there once a month so I would like to show
up with them a time or two.
I had the privilege of being a judge at the Police Motorcycle Rodeo held at the Melbourne Square Mall on
Saturday. Tony from the Cocoa Chapter helped organize, and 6 or 8 people from Cocoa were there, along
with one Member from Daytona. The weather started out looking real bad, but after a late start and not
enough volunteers we got underway. It turned out to be a beautiful day, and all of the events were com-
pleted. All of them can ride very well by the way. Watching them was a thrill in its own right.
We saw Glen & Betty and Sandy & Scott at the event. Glenn and Betty just made it there for the reveal of
the Tron motorcycle for the Brevard County Sheriffs office. The new Tron motorcycle built by the Parker
Brothers was unveiled at the event. The Parker Brothers create dream machines on TV and are actually a
local company. That thing has tires so wide you can barely sit on it.
Take time to ride.....have fun....and be safe

Settling a cow case
A big-city lawyer was representing the railroad in a lawsuit filed by an old rancher. The rancher's
prize bull was missing from the section through which the railroad passed. The rancher only wanted to
be paid the fair value of the bull.
The case was scheduled to be tried before the justice of the peace in the back room of the general store.
The attorney for the railroad immediately cornered the rancher and tried to get him to settle out of
court. The lawyer did his best selling job, and finally the rancher agreed to take half of what he was
asking.
After the rancher had signed the release and took the check, the young lawyer couldn't resist gloating a
little over his success, telling the rancher, "You know, I hate to tell you this, old man, but I put one
over on you in there. I couldn't have won the case. The engineer was asleep and the
fireman was in the caboose when the train went through your ranch that morning. I
didn't have one witness to put on the stand. I bluffed you!"
The old rancher replied, "Well, I'll tell you, young feller, I was a little worried about
winning that case myself, because that durned bull came home this morning."

It’s the end of September…..Where does the time go?? Less than 80 days until the
GWRRA Christmas party. Hopefully by then, I will be able to eat a fattening meal.
Diets Diets Diets. October is our double point visitation month, so get there early. It’s
always packed.
Eight of the group went to Eufaula, Alabama for the Region A convention; we had
great weather for the trip. I was hoping for some cooler mornings, but that didn’t hap-
pen until someone in my cabin put the AC down to 65 Degrees. I thought it was going
to snow!
Florida took home huge amounts of awards/achievements.

As you can see, there is a lot that goes on at the Rally. We do more than just eat. OK
We do a lot of that too, but there is always something going on and something to do.

Florida’s Rally is coming up in March. I invite ALL members to attend. It is not only for
team members. Come for the day; spend a night or two or three… I haven’t heard any-
thing about room reservations yet, but I’m sure it’s coming soon. Plan on going!
There are always tons of vendors at the Florida rally and it’s less than one hour away. Ok,
maybe 75 minutes.
It’s a great time getting to know the entire group. Sometimes you learn things about your
fellow GWRRA members that make you laugh… a lot! This rally I learned that Barb
makes up rules to her own card games. Guess who lost! Cheaters!
Don’t wait until someone says…You want to go?? Just say, Where do I sign up? I want to
go! If it’s too far for you to ride, drive the car! Lots of people drive to the rally.
Just trying to say, We have fun and Sandy and I want you to come join the fun.
Lots of Groupons going on. I’ve heard one of our members has so many groupons, she has
made an excel spreadsheet so she knows what she has to use and by when. Hope you got
in on some too. Great deals and we always have Great fun.
Hope so see you all at the meeting and out on a ride!

I flattened your cat Seems a guy was driving for hours thru desolate country when he passed a farmhouse, and before
he could react, a cat ran out in front of him and*splat*... he flattened the cat. Out of kindness and
consideration, he stopped, turned around and drove back to the farmhouse to notify the occu-
pants. When the housewife came to the door, said he, "Pardon me madame, but I just ran over a
cat in front of your house, and assumed that it must belong to you. I know this might be hard to
hear, but I wanted to let you know instead of just driving off...."
"Not so fast", says she. "How do you know it was our cat? Could you describe him? What does
he look like?"
The man promptly flopped down on the ground, and said "He looks like that", as he gave his best
shot at a dead cat impression.
"Oh no, you *horrible* man", she replied. "I meant, what did he look like*before* you hit him?"
At that, the man got up, covered his eyes with both hands and screamed
"Agggghhhhhhhhhh !!!!!!"
Celebrating an event An aged farmer and his wife were leaning against the edge of their pig-pen when the old woman
wistfully recalled that the next week would mark their golden wedding anniversary.
"Let's have a party, Homer," she suggested. "Let's kill a pig."
The farmer scratched his grizzled head. "Gee, Ethel," he finally answered, "I don't see
why the pig should take the blame for something that happened fifty years ago."
Safety Educator
Each day, more than 15 people are killed and more than 1,200 people are injured in crashes that
were reported to involve a distracted driver.1 Distracted driving is driving while doing another
activity that takes your attention away from driving; these activities can increase the chance of a
motor vehicle crash.
There are three main types of distraction:
Feature Article
Distracted Driving in the United States and Europe
A recent CDC analysis examined the frequency of two major distractions—cell phone use and
texting—among drivers in the United States and several countries in Europe.
Learn more
Visual—taking your eyes off the road;
Manual—taking your hands off the wheel; and
Cognitive—taking your mind off what you are doing.2
Distracted driving activities include things like using a cell phone, texting, and eating. Using in-
vehicle technologies (such as navigation systems) can also be sources of distraction. While any
of these distractions can endanger the driver and others, texting while driving is especially dan-
gerous because it combines all three types of distraction.2
How big is the problem?
In 2009, more than 5,400 people died in crashes that were reported to involve a distracted driver
and about 448,000 people were injured.1
Among those killed or injured in these crashes, nearly 1,000 deaths and 24,000 injuries included
cell phone use as the major distraction.1
The proportion of drivers reportedly distracted at the time of a fatal crash has increased from 7
percent in 2005 to 11 percent in 2009.1
When asked whether driving feels safer, less safe, or about the same as it did five years ago,
more than 1 in 3 drivers say driving feels less safe today. Distracted driving—cited by 3 out
of 10 of these drivers—was the single most common reason given for feeling less safe to-
day.3
A recent CDC analysis examined the frequency of two major distractions—cell phone use and
texting—among drivers in the United States and seven European countries (Belgium, France,
Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, and the United Kingdom). Results of the analysis
included the following findings:7
Cell phone use while driving:
25% of drivers in the United States reported that they “regularly or fairly often” talk on their
cell phones while driving.6
Distracted Driving
7
T-CLOCK CHECK : Tires and wheels, Controls, Lights
and electrics, Oil and fluids, Chassis, Kickstand.
In Europe, percentages ranged from 21% in the Netherlands to 3% in the United Kingdom. 7
75% of U.S. drivers ages 18 to 29 reported that they talked on their cell phone while driving at least
once in the past 30 days, and nearly 40% reported that they talk on their cell phone “regularly” or
“fairly often” while driving.6
In Europe, percentages of young adults who reported talking on their cell while driving at least once in
the past 30 days ranged from 50% in Portugal to 30% in the Netherlands.7
Texting or e-mailing while driving:
9% of drivers in the United States reported texting or e-mailing “regularly or fairly often” while driv-
ing.6
In Europe, percentages ranged from 10% in the Netherlands to 1% in the United Kingdom.7
52% of U.S. drivers ages 18-29 reported texting or e-mailing while driving at least once in the last 30
days, and more than a quarter report texting or e-mailing “regularly” or “fairly often” while driving. 6
In Europe, percentages of young adults who reported texting or e-mailing while driving at least once in
the past 30 days ranged from 44% in Portugal to 17% in the United Kingdom.7
What are the risk factors?
Some activities—such as texting—take the driver’s attention away from driving more frequently and for
longer periods than other distractions.2
Younger, inexperienced drivers under the age of 20 may be at highest risk because they have the highest
proportion of distraction-related fatal crashes.1
How can distracted driving be prevented?
Many states are enacting laws—such as banning texting while driving—or using graduated driver licensing
systems for teen drivers to help raise awareness about the dangers of distracted driving and to keep it
from occurring.4
On September 30, 2009, President Obama issued an executive order prohibiting federal employees from
texting while driving on government business or with government equipment.3
On October 27, 2010, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration enacted a ban that prohibits com-
mercial vehicle drivers from texting while driving.5

World Traveler.....Local Traveler.............
Titusville Chapter's motto is "Doing what only others dream about". And that is what we do.
Some of our members have really brought this into focus by making some fantastic trips this
year.
Mike and Charlotte with their trip to Alaska, true they didn’t go all the way on the bike, but
from here to Seattle WA. , was quite a trip, what with all the side trips before and after Alaska.
(But we all know it really was a “shake down” trip to get all t he bugs out of Mikes bike) No
matter… what a trip it was. The pictures and stories they brought back were absolutely won-
derful.
Then there are Richard and Linda Mitts. These two are no strangers to long distance travel.
OMG the things these two have seen and the places they've been…..could probably fill a book,
at least a small one. Richard and Linda also brought back breathtaking pictures of America. It
was a pleasure viewing both couples pictures at the meeting.
There is one thing I noticed that both trips had in common. It was concerning bike safety is-
sues that we really didn't stop to think about. With Mike and Charlotte we were made aware
that hot pavement WILL melt the rubber on a tire. WOW…..
Then Richard gave us a talk, pointing out just how little rubber on your tires, is actually on the
road. Who knew????????
This month Glenn and Betty took a trip to the keys. It wasn't on the bike but it was a trip. I un-
derstand that they did go snorkeling at John Pennekamp. I must tell you from having dived
there, it is really an experience. John Pennekamp is considered the world's only UNDERWA-
TER state park.
The point being…. whether you go on a bike or in a car… take pictures, gather stories. We
would really love to see and hear of them. Who knows, maybe something you show or tell will
influence someone to take that trip they have been putting off.
The trip might be across America or just a state trip to visit a chapter rally…GETUP…
GET OUT…and enjoy the beautiful country. DO IT!!!!!!!!! At the end, you don't want say "I
should have".
Until next month….ride safe

Dem' smart city folk A man from the city is out plowing his field and gets his tractor stuck in the wet ground.
A farmer driving by stops his truck and walks to the fence to call over the city feller. You need a mule to
plow such wet ground he says.
"Where can I buy one?" he is asked.
Well, I just happened to have one for 100 dollars he says.
"I'll take him," says the other man as he counts out the money.
I can't bring him over today. I don't work on Sunday, tomorrow OK?
"Sure."
The next day the truck pulls up and the old farmer gets out. He says, "sorry, bad news."
I went out after breakfeast and the mule was dead.
The city feller says just give me my money back then.
"Can't, spent it already!"
"Well... unload the mule then."
"What ya gonna do with him?"
"Raffle him off!"
"Naw, ya can't raffle off a dead mule!"
"Just watch me, us City fellers know a few tricks."
One month goes by and the city feller and farmer run into each other at the barber shop.
"What did ya do with that dead mule?"
"Raffled him off, sold 100 tickets at two dollars each and made 98 dollars profit."
"Didn't anyone complain?"
"Just one guy so I gave him his two dollars back!"

I had to sell my Goldwing and yes, I am still crying, but it is what it is. I had a Corbin seat made two years ago and had it completely rebuilt last year. I only rode the bike about 10 times after rebuilding the seat because of health prob-lems. If there might be anyone looking for a new seat, possibly a Corbin, I would like to sell the one I have. The seat is prewired for being heated.
