Minaajim: Good Stories from Curve Lake First Nation
Shawnigun
As told by Doug Williams to Julie Kapyrka
SHAWNIGUN (roughly as “of the southern direction”) was a guy who knew how to live off the land. He had a family, but he also kept a cabin on Fox Island, and he would live there alone. I would visit him, and he would tell me stories.
I fished with him quite a bit too.
One time, when we were hunting ducks in the spring, everything got quiet later in the day and Shawnigun said: “Well, I’m gonna go fish there on the ice.” He pointed to a large piece of floating ice across the water.
He paddled out to it and lay down flat on his stomach on the ice. He was doing a type of fishing where you have a lure on a line in one hand and a gaff in the other. And of course you are lying flat and covered by a white sheet—because we had to fish secretly at one time.
So there I am on the island, watching him drifting around on a piece of ice.
I could hear him singing softly while he watched for fish. Shawnigun believed fish loved country music, especially Hank Williams. And so he drifted along all over the place, fishing, and singing his songs.
Finally I see him get up after about four hours. He stretched, packed up his blanket and got in his canoe and paddled back over to me.
I said: “Hey Shawnigun what did you get?”
He said: “Nothing.”
I said: “Nothing? What were you doing?”
Shawnigun replied: “Watching the scenery go by. I had a marvelous time watching the bottom go by. What a beautiful view of the lake.”
Another time when I was out duck hunting in my own canoe on the shores of Fox Island I saw Shawnigun in a duck blind. I pulled up and joined him. Apparently he was having good luck.
After a couple hours of chatting and sitting my stomach rumbled.
“Geez, I’m hungry,“ I said.

HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS FOR EVERYONE
Halloween is an exciting time for everyone, but mostly children. Please follow a few reminders to ensure this Halloween is a safe one for all of the kids in the community.
Parents please keep in mind;
• Children love to participate in carving the pumpkin. Let the children do everything butthe carving. This is best left for the parents to complete.
• Choose costumes that properly fit your child to avoid injuries from tripping or falling.Costumes that are bright in colour are best for everyone to see and using glow sticks,flashlights or reflective tape are a good choice as well.
• Masks are not the best choice, as children cannot see their surroundings very well.Having compromised vision may result in injuries. Using make-up instead of a mask willprovide the child with a better way of getting around safely.
• Make sure an adult goes with Children trick or treating for their safety. Kids get excitedand may not look both ways when crossing the street. It is best to go door to door ingroups and with more than one adult. The more supervision the better.
• Take a look at the candy the child brings home before they begin eating it. Items thatmay already be opened are probably best to be left alone. Homemade items are usuallythe most delicious ones to receive. You should always know who gave the child thehomemade candy for safety reasons. If you do not know the person and they do notindicate on the package who made it, it would be a good idea to discard this item.
• Halloween is not an all night event. If you are a parent of a pre-teen or teenager, makesure you know where your child is going and that they are home at a decent hour.Speak to them about keeping Halloween fun and safe for everyone.
Children please keep in mind;
• Always keep safety in mind. When crossing the street, look both ways and take yourtime. Do not cross between cars. Cross at proper crosswalks or intersections. Runningback and forth across the street is not safe. Walk on the sidewalk when possible. Ifthere is no sidewalk, walk on the left hand side of the road facing traffic.
• Trick or Treat in groups and make sure all members of the group are always with you. Itis best to have an adult following along to keep everyone safe.
• Make sure you can be well seen by others especially drivers. This includes carrying aflashlight, reflective bag or tape, and wearing a costume that is bright in colour. Alsowear proper footwear to prevent injury.
• Houses that are not well lit or do not display a jack-o-lantern are probably notparticipating in the fun. Please do not bother these individuals and NEVER go inside astranger’s house.
Drivers please keep in mind;
• Children are full of excitement and may not be using the best judgment. Watch forchildren running across streets.
• Drive slowly. Children may not be wearing the most visible costume. Use extremecaution when driving in residential areas.
• Stay Alert. Do not be distracted while driving.
Homeowners please keep in mind;
• Have your walkway and front entrance well lit. It is great to participate in the fun, butsafety is most important.
• Have your walkway and front step clear of debris or items that may cause a child to tripor fall.
• Keep family pets away from the front door. Some pets may get a little too close forcomfort and scare the children, especially the younger ones.
• If you use a candle to light your pumpkin, please do not leave it unattended. As analternative to a candle you can purchase battery operated candles to reduce the risk offire.
• Keep an eye out for suspicious individuals. If you do not feel comfortable opening thedoor for an individual or large group of older kids, then don’t. It is okay not to. Shouldyou see any suspicious activity or individuals please report it to the police at;
1-888-310-1122
SAFETY is everyone’s responsibility.
Let’s keep this HALLOWEEN a SAFE one.
