MHS has not only lowered the size of most classes, but also employed the
personnelnecessarytoimplementandoverseeprogramsthatprovideapositive
llearningenvironmenttosupportyourstudents.
Intervention Support Program
The school-wide intervention support program is a systems approach to
establishingthesocial,cultural,andbehavioralsupportsneededforallstudents
to achieve social and academic success. Our intervention support emphasis
beginswith developinga structure focused onbehavior, character, andwork
ethicexpectations.Staffcontinuesprogressingbydevelopingandimplementing
consequences and rewards systems that focus on positive, preventative
measures; assessing data on an ongoing basis; and continuing strategies fo
placingproblembehaviorontheextinctionlist.Weareemphasizingconsistency
andinclusivenessforallstudentsandstaff.Mr.GeneKradleandMs.Chelse
Warnerareleadersimplementingthisapproach.

21St Century Seminar: Preparing Your Student for a Bright Future
Duringthespringof2010,acadreofinterestedMHSteachers,ledbyMr.AaronSanders,designedandarecurrently
implementingMHS’ fourthschool-wideacademy. In its firstpilotyear,the Freshman Academy isfeaturinga new
courseentitled“21stCenturySeminar.”Thecurriculumisrichintransitional,social,andacademicskillsrequiredfor
highschoolsuccessthroughoutastudent’shighschoolcareerandonintoposthigheducationandtheworkforce.
With the help of District leaders, who approved the acquisition of additional required technology supports
communitypartners,suchastheMontereyPublicLibrary,havehelpedmovethecourseforwardwithagreatstart.
Monterey Public Library staff members continue making themselves available to share instruction on research
techniqueskills andshareresearchbasedskillswithMHSstudents.Studentsare benefitting additionallyfromthe
FreshmanAcademyteachers’focusonCornellnote-takingskillsandnextsemester’sexpositoryreadingandacademic
summarywritingcurriculum.Studentsnotenrolledinoneofthefourpilotclassesreceivesimilarsupportinstruction
through other programs, such as AVID 9, Tutorial Support, MAOS Academy, and Language Acquisition classes

College & Career Center: An Excellent Resource for You
WeareeversogratefultohavebeenamongtheMPUSD’sthreecomprehensivehighschoolthatreceivedfundingforthe
developmentandstaffingforaCollege&CareerCenter.AtMontereyHighSchool,theCenterwillbeconstructedwithinthe
school’slibraryduringwinterbreak.Althoughtheactualstructurewillnotbecompletedandfurnishedfullyuntilsummer
theCenterwill function from a temporary,shared facilityon campus. In September,Ms.DoreenGraywasnamed the
Center’sCounselingSpecialist.WithhereducationalbackgroundincounselingandexperiencewiththeMHSstudents,staff,
andadministrationinherpreviousroleastheSPARCAcademysupportpersonnel,Ms.Graywillbeamajorinfluenceinthe
oversightandcollaborationwiththeexistingCounselingDepartment.Overthenextfewmonths,Ms.Graywillbevisiting
withaselectgroupofcollegeandcareercounselorsinboththeSanFranciscoandMontereyBayareastocollaborateand
plantheCenter’scontinueddevelopment.
