TMWF News
The University of Texas at Austin Muslim Students' Association (MSA) had their first-ever fundraising dinner concerning Domestic Violence Awareness and the Islamic responseto this violence on October 9, 2014. The event was co-sponsored by the Texas MuslimWomen's Foundation and Voices Against Violence. Proceeds from the event will go towardsthe UT Counseling and Mental Health Center's Survivor Fund, which provides aids to victimsof domestic and sexual violence in the UT Community and Texas Muslim Women'sFoundation.
We are extremely thankful for the huge presence of MSA members, who came out andsupported this event, Austin's local family violence agencies, support groups and allspeakers for such strong voices. Special thanks to Sara Bawany and Usama Malik for theiroutreach and PR leadership. They were able to raise more than $4,000 for Voices againstViolence!
TMWF is not only dedicated to work on intervention but prevention of family violence. Mona KafeelChief Operating Officer____________________________________________________________________________ Early in October we were joined by our generous donors, volunteers and friends, whoare committed to the work of the Texas Muslim Women's Foundation. It was wonderful tohear Plano Mayor, Harry LaRosiliere discuss the community's efforts to address the issueof domestic violence and Mayor LaRosiliere's remarks echoed TMWF's stance - it takes theinvolvement of our entire community to successfully heal the scars of domesticviolence and ensure Peace in the Home.
We have been blessed to have the backing of local and national Mosques, individual donors, students, partner agencies, law enforcement, volunteers, foundations, corporate, andgovernment supporters in taking a stand against domestic violence and with the support of

Community Resources
Child Abuse and Child Protection Services
Listen to our Radio Azad show with Lynne McLean, Chief Executive Officer of the CollinCounty Children's Advocacy Center, who spoke about the detrimental effects of child
abuse and the resources available to the community. Click here to listen.
90% of children who face abuse or neglect are abused by a caregiver or someone theyknow, not a stranger (http://bit.ly/1x2tePG).Abuse can be physical, emotional or sexual. This often leaves the victim sufferingwith lifelong effects such as substance abuse or interpersonaldifficulties, among many others (http://bit.ly/1xWEaMY).In Collin County over 4500 cases of abuse and neglect were reported in 2013. Manyabuse and neglect cases go unreported!
It is vital that parents need to be aware of changes in their children's behavior such assudden fear of a certain individual, which is a warning sign that there may be suspectedabuse. To report suspected abuse call 1-800-252-5400 or 911.
Texas Muslim Women's Foundation works with agencies such as the Collin CountyChildren's Advocacy Center and Child Protective Services (CPS) to keep children safe. Through counseling, legal support, advocacy and careful case management, we support thewell-being of children and families.
Our work with CPS has shown us the following:
CPS acts in the best interest children and works to ensure their safetyCPS offers parenting resources and classes for families seeking assistanceCPS only removes children when it is necessary to protect them from abuse orneglect. If children are removed from their home, it is important for parents to cooperate withCPS to find the best solution and course of action. When it is established that thehome is safe for children, it is possible for custody to be restored.
