Commentary

Editorial Comment by Ed Anderson“Coastal Exposures — To Be or Not To Be?”

Some time ago, amongst some Committee members, I informally and tentatively foreshadowed my desire to

relinquish the role of Newsletter Editor. There are several reasons for my decision, mostly personal, but I will confine my comments here to just one pragmatic reason, and explore some associated reverberations.

I was elected as Newsletter Editor at the AGM in February 2015 and published my first Coastal Exposures in March 2015. (Please excuse a small lapse into nostalgia here: That’s the cover page opposite — from conception, through design, layout, and birth, that first newsletter took about five months, and I was quite unsatisfied with the result [nostalgia comes from Gk. nostos return home, algos pain].) Towards the end of 2016, when we decided to use MYPHOTOCLUB to manage our competition procedures, I volunteered to participate in the MPC Subcommittee to help get the process under way. At some point, through a process little understood by science, I became CCG’s MYPHOTOCLUB Webmaster — a nebulous, nonexistent office. Indeed, the general feeling of the Committee was that there would be no need for such a position once the MPC implementation was settled. That was a misapprehended notion. MPC will continue to grow, evolve, and change into the unforeseeable technological future, so the necessity for someone to provide liaison between us and the MPC Administrator will continue. Therefore, I recommend that we create a Committee position of Technical Coordinator, to act as MPC Webmaster and coordinate related technical matters (including the fate of the CCG Website). I am willing to accept nomination to such a position in 2018.

While performing in both roles — Newsletter Editor and MPC Webmaster — over the past year, I have learned that the workload, and especially the mental acrobatics required, is more than I am willing to accept. I believe that my pre-retirement professional experience and skills in Information Technology are best suited to the role of Technical Coordinator.

Consideration of the role of Newsletter Editor has already raised the inevitable question: Given the scope and potential of the MPC website, do we actually need a traditional “newsletter”? During 2017, as Editor, I have systematically moved much of the content of Coastal Exposures to MPC. Indeed, the only remaining content of the Newsletter, that is not duplicated on MPC is the News and Current Affairs, Commentary, and External

Events Calendar. I believe that all this material can be accommodated within MPC, with many additional advantages — real-time news and activities reports, for example.

Should we then change the position of Newsletter Editor to “News Editor”, whose role would be to maintain a news function on MPC? I am willing to facilitate, guide, and act as mentor in such a change, but not take on News Editor duties.

For a long time, I opposed ideas that questioned the need for a newsletter, not because of egotism, but because I held the view that the Newsletter provided a non-ephemeral record of CCG history. Gradually, I’ve changed my mind; through properly maintained archiving processes in MPC, I believe a reliable club history can be achieved. A review of the websites of several prominent Queensland photography clubs suggests that news and activity reporting is a primary function of their online presence.

I urge members to consider these questions and to discuss them with Committee members and/or email ideas to the Secretary for Committee consideration.

Given the scope and potential of the MPC website, do we actually need a traditional “newsletter”?
