1 Newsletter No. 7 - Term 1 Week 7 Thursday 16 March 2017 From the Principal…………… I hope you all enjoyed the long weekend with your families. The weather has been very hot and I want to remind children to wear their hats until the end of April, a timeline Sunsmart recommends. You can also follow the Sunsmart Widget on our website for daily advice. Last night we had our Family Life Victoria information sessions. The feedback from parents reported that the sessions were extremely professional and very well done. Certainly the parents who attended the evening appreciated the information and the time they could spend with their children in discussions. Now that our camps are over, children have been working very hard on their classroom work. Our short term has meant that we have had testing and have been doing our planning for the year. Our support groups are up and running so all children should be coming home talking about all the interesting things in their day. On the sporting front Steve Harvey has been training our Grades 3- 6s for cross country, which is on the 27 th April, here at school. Paul Todd has the choir practising and twelve of our students will be chosen to sing in the combined choir for the NEV Region production at Hamer Hall, later in the year. This is a new inclusion in our calendar of musical events. Don’t forget to get your Easter Raffle tickets in by 3:30pm on the 24 th March. This year we will be drawing the raffle tickets prior to the children leaving for the holidays. Be in it to win it! SCHOOL COUNCIL ELECTIONS We still have two 2-year parent positions and two 1-year parent positions to fill. If you would like to be on School Council, please contact the office, it is a very rewarding activity. PARKING ISSUES On Friday afternoon we were contacted by an irate neighbour in Chesney Drive, opposite the school. A Kalinda parent was parked in Chesney Drive but too close to the corner of Kalinda Road, which meant that cars into Chesney Drive had to drive over the traffic island to get into their street and driveway. The family in the car was verbally abused by the person in the parked car. The Maroondah City Council have been contacted and traffic officers will be observing and acting on any person parking illegally in Kalinda Road and other streets around the school. We ask that parents please respect residents’ right of way in their own streets and not block the streets or driveways when dropping off or picking up their children. BADGE PRESENTATIONS On Monday, our newly elected Junior School Council Representatives, House Captains and House Vice-Captains, will be presented with their badges. GAIL POLLARD PRINCIPAL

1/2D and 1/2R’s Whole Class Story

1/2DR together planned and created a Narrative Story titled, ‘Diver Dan’s Special

Song’ The purpose of this was to model the process of planning, rereading, editing

and the 6+1 Traits of Writing, such as structure and ideas.

We used a beautiful picture prompt that had to be included into the story in some

way. This became the setting for our story. We hope you enjoy our story!

    Picture prompt and plan

    Diver Dan’s Special Song

Diver Dan was excited, today he was going to visit a coral reef that had an

underwater castle. He had seen pictures of it before and could not wait to see

the how the ocean had changed the building over time as well as the merpeople.

Would it still have the double axes on the huge front door or the glistening blue

flags? Would it still have gold around the window frames? Would it still have a

winding staircase leading up to the turrets? He could not wait to find out.

Diver Dan goes deep into the sea and can see the beautiful castle. Dan can see

shadows moving past the windows upstairs. He swims up to the huge door, goes

inside and the door crashes behind him. Dan felt terrified. He heard an echo from

the staircase but he couldn’t see who made the sound.

Dan remembered a song that his Grandma had taught him and he began to sing

    it. It went like this

Mermaids, mermen we are all friends.

Mermaids, mermen do not be afraid.

Mermaids, mermen come out wherever you are.

    Mermaids, mermen

When the merpeople heard the song they started to reveal themselves and joined

    in!

Dan was thrilled to meet them and gave them a special box containing human

trinkets. The merpeople knew he was friendly because he had sung their secret

song and they invited him to visit again. They also presented him with his very own

    magical trident.

OSHClub News Before School / After School Care Program Term 1 – Week 7

Dear Parents/Guardians, Welcome to the world of OSH Club. This week was a very busy and very hot one, lots of icypoles and cool watermelon to keep the heat at bay. Lanna X. made a beautiful paper dahlia with our assistant Avril; it is proudly on display in our room. Well done, Lanna. We have been playing Octopus, Silent Ball and Fruit Salad during our morning sessions, and enjoying the sunshine and outdoor play at the Chalk painting and basketball courts during the afternoons. We have also been making the most of the concrete and grassy areas outside our room to play cricket, tennis and use our ribbon wands each morning. On our menu this week were fruit platters, cheese rolls, pita bread and dips, and corn chips. There are still lots of spots left for our Thursday Afternoon session of Play On sports - a 10-week Footy coaching workshop available to both OSH attendees and non OSH club children which runs for 45 mins. WALKSPOT – A WALKING SURVEY

Help us find Maroondah’s greatest places to walk

    15/03/17

Maroondah is striving to become a great place to walk. To assist us to achieve this outcome,

Council is participating in the WalkSpot project. WalkSpot is an online mapping survey focused

on understanding people’s experiences, feelings and perceptions of walking locally.

The WalkSpot project is a collaboration between Victoria Walks and CrowdSpot supported by a

    TAC Community Road Safety Grant.

    How to participate

Residents are invited to provide their feedback about their walking experiences in Maroondah by

using the Walkspot’s project’s mapping website.

Participants can choose to provide comments in three ways on the interactive map:

Adding a spot on the interactive map quickly and easily (by completing the survey).

    Commenting within an existing spot.

    Voting on an existing spot.

To add your spots to the Maroondah WalkSpot website, visit

    http://walkspot.crowdspot.com.au/14/-37.81355/145.25179

WalkSpot will be open for submissions until Friday 28 April.

How will the feedback be used by Council?

Posting on the mapping website will provide Council with unique data to inform priority pedestrian

path improvements. Any infrastructure requests that residents indicate will be noted yet may not be

resolved by Council at this time.

Residents reporting serious damage or concerns with Council’s footpaths are asked to contact

    Council at [email protected] or 1300 88 22 33.

Let your fingers do the walking and share your great and not so great walking spots and

    experiences.
