This is an amazing place and I look forward to growing together with the staff, students and parents. My blessing at the liturgy on Monday was very beautiful and a special thanks to Fr Karel and Mr Mullane for preparing this. The school itself is beautiful and well maintained and is a credit to all who work hard to ensure that our children have a safe and inviting place to learn. Welcome back to Term 3. It is shaping up to be a full and exciting term of learning and growth for everyone. A reminder to parents to make sure that their children have the correct school uniforms and to check the school bags on a regular basis for homework and notes from teachers and the school. Our school celebrated NAIDOC week at the end of last semester and we have had wonderful feedback from the community about our celebrations. Thank you to all who worked hard to make it a wonderful day. The celebrations are still happening in Mossman this week with the Flag Raising ceremony at the Council Chambers on Monday. This Friday our students from Years 5 through to 7 will be participating in the NAIDOC street march and then spending some time at the George Davis Park for the presentations there. Our Year 5 students will be presenting their play to the wider community on the day so if you have the time please join us in supporting their learning. On Wednesday afternoon Mrs Bronwyn Caltabiano arranged for Jump Rope for Heart to visit our school. We saw some great jump rope skills, some of our students learned to do the pretzel jump, the double rope jump and Miss Newell was pretty amazing!!! Jump Rope promotes healthy living and exercise for our hearts. Thank you Mrs Caltabiano for arranging this visit. The Mossman Show is on this week end. Lots of rides, games and things to see – an enjoyable family outing for everyone. St Augustine’s has a display of the learning that we engage with in our school, thanks to Mrs Richelle Woods and Mrs Erin Mullane for setting up this display. When you are at the show take the time to have a look at the wonderful work of our staff and students. A reminder that Monday is a public holiday here in Mossman and the school will be closed. On Friday the CES (Catholic Education Services) office in Cairns will be closed due to the Cairns Show. The Parish Sacramental Program is in its final stages and all students who are participating in the program will be working with the Program Coordinators in a Spirit Day this coming Friday as they prepare to receive the Sacraments of Confirmation and Communion. Please keep all of these in our thoughts and prayers. The St Augustine’s School motto is ‘Together in Faith, learning for life.’ Becoming a lifelong learner is what we, as educators, strive to instil in each child in our school. Being a lifelong learner means that you are always interested in the world around you and that you are always growing and becoming stronger as a person. At the end of Semester 1 we recognise students who have shown that they are lifelong learners and take pride in their achievements and we look forward to a renewed learning journey with each of our students in semester 2.

Learning is our work here at St Augustine’s and to help create the best learning environment we need to be able to maintain our school and provide resources which create engaged learning. Our school fees go a long way towards supporting our work and our school fee notices will be sent home in your child’s school bag in the next fortnight so please keep checking the school bags. Thank you to all those parents who make sure that their school fees are up to date. If you have any queries please contact our Finance Officer – Mrs Tess Walker.

A reminder that our next P and F Meeting is tonight Thursday the 17th of July at 7 pm in our library. The P and F is a vital part of our school community, I look forward to meeting and working with the P and F.

Sunday 27 July - Saturday 2 August and will focus on

the theme:

“Come, live life in all its fullness”

This inspirational call is based on the Gospel of John

(10:10), challenging those who answer it to “live

fully”.

Reflecting this Gospel call, Catholic schools strive to

provide a learning experience through which every

young person has the opportunity to reach their full

human potential - spiritually, intellectually,

emotionally, socially, culturally and physically - and

know what it means to engage in all that life has to

offer.

You will receive a flyer/envelope for each of your students explaining the products available and how they may be ordered. This year we have introduced online ordering for your convenience and the convenience of your school. Sibling Photos are also available for students enrolled at the school. Please collect a ‘Sibling Order Envelope’ from your school’s office. Please note: online orders for Siblings close 48 hours prior to the day of photography. After this time, the Sibling Order Envelope must be returned to the school, on or before photo day. Ordering Online: Should you wish to order online you will find detailed instructions (as per below) on how to go about this on the back of your order flyer, or you can order using your payment envelope in the same way you always have. Please note: envelopes are not required to be handed in if ordering online.

If Not Ordering Online: Payments can be made by cash, cheque or money order. Please ensure that each student returns his/her own envelope, even if payment is made in the eldest child’s envelope. It is important that envelopes are not placed inside other envelopes. Students not ordering online are to bring their envelopes on or preferably before Photo Day.

look forward to learning and growing together

with you.

I extend massive thanks and heartfelt

appreciation to everyone who assisted and

participated in the wonderful, fantastic NAIDOC

celebrations held at St. Augustine’s last term,

June 25th. What a day! I believe we truly

embraced the meaning of celebration, the big

smiles and joy I witnessed and the culture love

and sharing was truly inspiring!

A feature of St Augustine’s observance of

NAIDOC day 2014 was the smoking ceremony

and Traditional Welcome to Country performed

by Kuku Yalanji elder Lorna Shuan. This solemnly

marked the commencement of the day and

preceded the full school Liturgy. In keeping with

this year’s theme: Serving Country: Centenary

and Beyond our service had a distinct military

presence. Guest Speakers included Mr Bruce

Craven from the Mossman RSLA Branch, who

presented the service history of each Indigenous

solider from the Mossman community. Able

Seaman Bosun Godfrey Bero from HMAS Cairns

Navy Base spoke about his interesting naval

career and Mossman High School Year 10

student Jamie Lee Williams presented her poem

especially written for the mural at the RSLA

clubhouse. A special thank you must be made to

Father Karel and Mr Mullane who presented

such a touching liturgy.

NAIDOC day also saw the ‘world premier’ of the

play “Kubirri”, especially written for the day by

Ms Caitlin Donigi, approved by local elders and

wonderfully performed by senior students.

Parents and guests then visited the library to

look at the display of artefacts, PowerPoints and

service histories of Indigenous warriors and

shared a very enjoyable morning tea.

Students continued the celebration of the day

with a series of cultural activities that

investigated traditional Indigenous life through

games, music, art, storytelling and weaving.

Students also visited the library to look at the

themed display and listen to a talk by Mr Craven

on his service in Vietnam.
