FEDERAL ELECTION 2016

Both Houses of Parliament have been dissolved and we will have a double-dissolution election on July 2nd 2016. Over the next two months, students, particularly in our Senior School, will have the chance to look at the role that advertising plays in the election process and consider the financial cost incurred, by both parties. Some say it will be as high as $100million.

DISTRICT CROSS COUNTRY

Last Friday students from Middle and Senior School competed in the District Cross Country event and once again NICHOLAS B will represent our school at Regional Cross Country, being placed in the top ten for his age group. This is such a wonderful achievement and Nicholas is such a very good athlete. We wish him well for the next level of the competition. It was most pleasing to hear that all our students represented our school with exemplary sportsman-like behaviour.

CONGRATULATIONS, NICHOLAS!

INFLUENZA

In Australia, our influenza “flu” season typically runs from May to October, usually peaking in August. Influenza is caused by a highly contagious virus that is spread by

fluids produced during coughing and sneezing, or by the direct contact with those fluids on surfaces. There are three types of influenza. A, B and C. The incubation period for flu is usually two days. People with flu can be infectious shortly before signs and symptoms commence and up to five to seven days after becoming sick. In order to minimize the spread of “flus” the following are reminders for us all:

• Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing

• Throw used tissues in plastic-lined bins

• Wash your hands with soap and water, preferably warm water if available

• Reduce the spread of germs by avoiding touching your eyes, nose and mouth.

Please keep your child home when they are unwell and make sure they drink plenty of fluids.

EDUCATION WEEK

The week beginning 16th May is Victoria’s nominated “Education Week” where learning and teaching in schools is celebrated. This year we are celebrating our fifty year birthday! We will be celebrating during the week in our classrooms, culminating in Open Night on Wednesday 18th May, where all classrooms, teaching areas and kindergarten will be open for you to have a glimpse of what life is like in the school.. On Thursday 19th May, we will be conducting a Prep 2017 Open Morning and interested parents and visitors have the opportunity to visit our Prep rooms. Hope you are all able to come and celebrate with us.

DRESS-UP FOR “CAREER DAY”

On May 20th, the S.R.C. will host “Career Day”. Students are encouraged to dress-up in clothes/costumes that depict the career they would like to have when they finish their schooling.

We ask for a gold coin donation. The proceeds will be given to State School’s Relief. State School’s Relief is a not-for-profit organisation which assists all students

to participate fully in education. We hope you support this fund-raising dress-up “Career Day”.

STUDENT SAFETY

Our students’ safety is of uttermost importance to us all. Schools are responsible for, and charged with, providing duty of care which includes

managing student supervision, visitors to our school, after school collection and supporting parental responsibility. We must at all times provide a safe environment and undertake any preventative measures to address any risk to students’ safety. It is for this reason that the external doors to the

school, except for the entrance to the school, will remain locked in the morning until the music plays and the teachers open them. I remind all parents that the student toilets

MUST NOT be used by parents.

REMINDER

CURRICULUM DAY – 23RD

MAY

This is a student-free day, when staff will be commencing writing Student Reports. Reports will be forwarded to parents on Friday 17th June.

2017 KINDERGARTEN AND PREP

ENROLMENTS

It is that time of year when schools are commencing preparation for the following year and student numbers are critical to the school’s staffing structure. For many of you it must seem very early in the year, but for schools it is imperative that we have knowledge of numbers for staffing and other resources. I would ask you to please complete the required Student Admission Enrolment Form if you intend enrolling your child at Burwood Heights Primary School in 2017. This form is available from the main office or on the school’s website. It can be forwarded by mail if requested.

WET DAY PROGRAMME

It is of high importance that we care for the floors as best we can, as you do in your homes. The ground outside is often very muddy, or at the very least as many puddles. I do urge you to encourage your child to wear slippers inside, as their shoes are certain to become quite wet and dirty when they are outside playing. This would assist us considerably.
