Westlawn Public School Newsletter Term 2 Week 1 28 April 2020 Strive to Achieve North Street, Grafton. 2460 6642 7466 [email protected] Dear Families. As you may be aware, the Minister for Education the Hon. Sarah Mitchell, made an announcement last week regarding the way schools will move forward this term. This was a new development and schools now have information that was not available to them at the end of last term. One new development was the allocation of an extra Staff Development Day (pupil free) held yesterday. This gave schools the opportunity to plan for the phased return to school for students. As you would imagine, this is a complex process so we thank you for allowing us the time to plan. The Minister detailed a measured approach to the return to school for all children with an increase in face to face teaching time beginning Monday Week 3 (11 May). From Week 3 all students will be able to attend school for one day per week. This is based on the NSW Health’s physical distancing recommendations of 10 students in an average sized classroom to a maximum of 15 in larger spaces. Children in Kindergarten will attend Mondays, Years 1 & 2 Tuesdays, Years 3 & 4 Wednesdays and Years 5 & 6 Thursdays. On Fridays, teachers will supervise vulnerable children and the children of essential workers and complete professional learning and compliance training. This timetable allows children to work at school on their class program with peers and to have contact with their teacher. We will continue to provide at school supervision for students of essential workers on their non-timetabled days. Until Week 3, schools will continue to operate as they did for the last weeks of Term 1 (families are encouraged to please keep children at home if they can). Home Learning Packages will continue to be offered with the change over day being Mondays. Alternatively, children in years 3-6 with home internet access may join their Google Classroom. Google Classroom assignments will be available from today. Google Classroom work is the same as the work in the HLP. If your child is attending school, please ensure they have their HLP and a water bottle with them. Please note that the Canteen is closed until further notice. We will be guided by the NSW Health and Department of Education guidelines during this process and will continue to keep you informed as information comes to us. Message from the Principal

Dear Families.

As you may be aware, the Minister for Education

the Hon. Sarah Mitchell, made an announcement

last week regarding the way schools will move

forward this term. This was a new development

and schools now have information that was not

available to them at the end of last term. One new

development was the allocation of an extra Staff

Development Day (pupil free) held yesterday. This

gave schools the opportunity to plan for the phased

return to school for students. As you would

imagine, this is a complex process so we thank you

for allowing us the time to plan.

The Minister detailed a measured approach to the

return to school for all children with an increase in

face to face teaching time beginning Monday Week

3 (11 May). From Week 3 all students will be able

to attend school for one day per week. This is

based on the NSW Health’s physical distancing

recommendations of 10 students in an average

sized classroom to a maximum of 15 in larger

spaces.

Children in Kindergarten will attend Mondays,

Years 1 & 2 Tuesdays, Years 3 & 4 Wednesdays and

Years 5 & 6 Thursdays. On Fridays, teachers will

supervise vulnerable children and the children of

essential workers and complete professional

learning and compliance training. This timetable

allows children to work at school on their class

program with peers and to have contact with their

teacher. We will continue to provide at school

supervision for students of essential workers on

their non-timetabled days.

Until Week 3, schools will continue to operate as

they did for the last weeks of Term 1 (families are

encouraged to please keep children at home if they

can). Home Learning Packages will continue to be

offered with the change over day being Mondays.

Alternatively, children in years 3-6 with home

internet access may join their Google Classroom.

Google Classroom assignments will be available

from today. Google Classroom work is the same as

the work in the HLP.

If your child is attending school, please ensure

they have their HLP and a water bottle with

them. Please note that the Canteen is closed until

further notice.

We will be guided by the NSW Health and

Department of Education guidelines during this

process and will continue to keep you informed as

information comes to us.

COVID -19 SAFETY AT WPS- NEW PARENT/CARER

PROTOCOLS

Data and medical advice say that the risk of COVID-

19 transmission from student to student, student

to adult and adult to student is minimal. The risk is

greatest from adult to adult. As such, we ask that

parents refrain from entering the school

grounds during school hours. If you are collecting

your child from school, please wait outside the

school gates and ask your child to walk to the gate

to meet you. Advice from the Department of

Education is that there should be no face to face

meetings with staff members. Teachers are more

than happy to discuss any concerns you may have

with you over the phone. If you call our lovely office

ladies they will pass a message on to the teacher

who will endeavor to call you back within 24 hours.

Thank you for not remaining at the HLP Tub

Point on Mondays for longer than it takes to drop

off and pick up booklets. We ask that you refrain

from having conversations with other parents or

staff members. Please call the school office if you

have an enquiry. We are happy to answer them.

Please call the office if you would like clarification

on any of these points.

ANZAC DAY

Our Captains Sophie and Max and Vice Captains

Cara and Hayden represented WPS students and

staff as they lay a wreath at the Grafton War

Memorial on ANZAC Day. They did a wonderful job

in their official capacity as school leaders and we

were proud of the dignity they brought to the day.

We discussed the sacrifice made by those brave

men and women who served in wars and peace

keeping efforts around the world and our leaders

had those thoughts in mind as they lay the wreathe.

Our Leaders were fortunate enough to be

accompanied by Mr Scott Rhodes who played the

bagpipes as they walked to the Memorial. Whilst

different to past ANZAC Days, the morning was

definitely one to remember.
